Before selling, gifting, or donating a Windows 11 PC, back up the files you want to keep, confirm you can access its BitLocker recovery key if encryption is enabled, and reset it using Remove everything with Clean data turned on. After the reset, remove the PC from your Microsoft account. Microsoft says Clean data makes removed files harder to recover, but it does not meet government or industry data-erasure standards.
1. Back up files you want to keep
A reset removes the data you choose to remove, so first copy any documents, photos, and other files you still need to a separate destination. Microsoft recommends backing up important information before resetting and documents Windows Backup as an option in its handoff guidance.

Before moving on, check that the files you care about are actually available in the backup destination. Do not rely on the PC you are about to reset as your only copy.

Some Windows PCs have device encryption enabled automatically, including devices set up with a Microsoft account or a work or school account. If the PC is encrypted, make sure you can access its BitLocker recovery key before starting reset or other recovery work. Microsoft says support cannot retrieve or recreate a lost key.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
The recovery key is a 48-digit number. It may be backed up to a Microsoft account or a work or school account; verify that the saved copy exists and that you can open it. Microsoft also allows saving a copy to a USB flash drive, but keep that drive somewhere separate from the PC. A USB drive is optional for the normal Settings reset.

3. Reset Windows and remove your files
- Open Settings > System > Recovery, then select Reset PC.
- Choose Remove everything. Do not choose Keep my files: that option reinstalls Windows while retaining personal files.
- Turn on Clean data for a PC you plan to sell, donate, or give away.
- Choose a reinstall source: Cloud download fetches a fresh Windows copy; Local reinstall uses files already on the PC and may not include the latest updates.
- Follow the prompts and let the reset finish.
Remove everything removes personal files, apps, and settings. The choice between Cloud download and Local reinstall concerns where Windows setup files come from; it does not change the keep-or-remove decision.

What Clean data does—and does not do
Microsoft Support says Clean data “makes it harder for other people to recover files you’ve removed.” Microsoft also explicitly cautions that this consumer feature does not meet government and industry data-erasure standards. If the PC contains confidential organizational data subject to formal disposal requirements, follow your organization’s approved sanitization policy instead of treating this reset as certified erasure.

4. Let the reset run without interruption
The screen may remain black for a long time—occasionally more than 15 minutes—and the PC may restart by itself. Microsoft warns that manually restarting the computer during the reset could cause the process to fail. Leave it plugged in and wait for the reset to complete rather than interrupting it because the display appears inactive.

5. Remove the PC from your Microsoft account
Once the backup is complete and the PC has been reset, sign in to your Microsoft account’s device page and remove the old PC. This is a separate web-account step; resetting Windows does not itself remove the device from your account. Microsoft also describes an Unlink action related to the Microsoft Store device limit. Follow the remove and unlink guidance on Microsoft’s device handoff page.
6. Leave it at the Windows setup screen
After the reset finishes, leave the PC at the initial Windows setup screen for its new owner. They can then configure it with their own account. This is a practical handoff step, not a separate reset requirement.
