Secure affected and reused accounts, contact financial or health providers when relevant, save a record of what you do, and report suspected fraud through your country’s official recovery service.
1. Verify the notice and find out what was exposed
Do not use an unsolicited email or text link—or a phone number in the message—to confirm the incident. Visit the university’s official website or student portal, or find a phone number independently in its directory. Contact its privacy, information-security, or incident-response office.

Ask the university:
- Whether your information was involved, and what details it can share to confirm that.
- Which categories of information were exposed, accessed, or acquired.
- When the incident happened and was discovered, and whether the exposure has been contained.
- What actions it recommends, what assistance it is offering, and how to get updates or report suspicious activity.
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) advises affected people to ask the organization what happened, what information was affected, and what protective steps it plans to take. Keep a dated log of calls and messages, and follow up in writing when possible. ICO: steps after a personal data breach

2. Secure accounts that could be affected
- Change the password for the affected university account. Change it anywhere else you reused it, starting with email, banking, and other sensitive accounts.
- Use a unique password for each account and enable multifactor authentication (MFA) wherever it is available.
- Review recent sign-ins, active sessions, recovery email addresses and phone numbers, and email forwarding rules. Remove anything you do not recognize and sign out other sessions if the service allows it.
- Be cautious of follow-up emails, texts, calls, and websites that use university-specific details. Do not share a password or verification code or make a payment in response to an unexpected request. Contact the university or service using a known official channel instead.
The ICO recommends strong passwords and MFA, and warns that breach information can help criminals impersonate trusted organizations. ICO guidance

Bank or payment-card details
Contact your bank or card issuer through its official app or website, or use the number printed on your card. Ask whether the affected card or credential should be blocked or replaced, and review transactions for unfamiliar activity. The ICO likewise advises contacting your financial institution if statements show activity you do not recognize. ICO guidance
Social Security number or other identity information in the United States
Review your credit reports for accounts or activity you do not recognize. A credit freeze is free and restricts access to your credit report; you must contact each of the three nationwide credit bureaus to place one. A fraud alert is also free and asks creditors to take steps to verify your identity before opening new credit. IdentityTheft.gov says an initial fraud alert lasts one year; its recovery guidance also explains extended alerts and freezes. IdentityTheft.gov: recovery steps

A freeze and an alert are not the same. An initial alert can be placed by contacting one bureau, which must notify the other two; a freeze must be placed separately with all three. A freeze imposes a stronger restriction on access to your report, but you may need to lift it when applying for credit. Choose based on your circumstances and be prepared to manage any freeze when you need a lender to review your report. IdentityTheft.gov: recovery steps
Health or insurance information
Contact the insurer or health provider through a verified channel. Check explanations of benefits, bills, and medical records for unfamiliar services or changes. The FTC recommends checking explanations of benefits and medical records for errors in guidance related to certain health-information breaches; that rule does not apply universally to all university records. Lost or stolen identity document
If a passport, driving licence, cheque book, or other document was lost or stolen, contact its issuer and follow its cancellation or replacement process. The ICO specifically recommends reporting lost or stolen documents to their issuer. ICO guidance
4. Check any assistance the university offers
If the university offers credit monitoring, identity-theft insurance, or another service, verify the details through its official notice or breach page before enrolling. Check who is eligible, the enrollment deadline, service duration, provider, and what information or support is covered. The FTC advises affected people to use free services offered after a breach, such as credit monitoring or identity-theft insurance. FTC: What To Do After a Data Breach

Monitoring is not a substitute for securing accounts or reporting suspicious activity, and it does not prevent every kind of fraud. A paid identity-protection service is not automatically necessary: U.S. consumers can also use free credit reports, freezes, fraud alerts, and official recovery steps when appropriate. 5. If you spot fraud, contact the affected organization and document it
- Contact the company or institution where the suspicious activity occurred using a verified phone number, app, or website. Ask its fraud team to secure, close, or freeze the account and explain how to dispute the activity.
- Change the affected login and PIN, along with any reused credentials. Follow the institution’s instructions for securing the account.
- In the United States, use IdentityTheft.gov’s recovery steps for a tailored recovery plan and guidance on reports, alerts, freezes, and disputing fraudulent accounts.
- Keep dates, case numbers, copies of messages, and the names of people you contacted. The ICO also advises keeping a record of contact, checking bank statements and credit reports, and contacting a financial institution about unfamiliar activity. ICO guidance
6. Understand what a breach notice does—and does not—mean
A notice means the organization believes your information may have been involved; it does not prove that anyone has used it fraudulently. Conversely, not receiving a notice does not establish that your data was unaffected.
Notification rules depend on jurisdiction. In the UK, the ICO says organizations do not have to notify individuals about every breach. Direct notification is required when a breach is likely to put people at risk. The ICO’s 72-hour reporting period is a deadline for an organization to report a reportable breach to the ICO—not a countdown for an affected person to act. For legal rights, complaint routes, and notification rules outside the United States and United Kingdom, check the privacy regulator or consumer-protection authority in your country. Local procedures vary.
