Then remove standing water, clean what can be salvaged, and dry the house and wet belongings as quickly as possible. The CDC recommends cleaning and drying within 24–48 hours if possible; this is a prompt-action target, not a guarantee that mold will not grow.
This is general U.S. guidance. Follow local instructions when floodwater may contain sewage or chemicals, or when the building has structural damage.

What should I do first after my house floods?
- Check for immediate danger before entering. If you smell gas or suspect a leak, leave immediately. Turn off the main gas valve only if you can do so safely, open windows if safe, and notify the gas utility or emergency authorities. Do not return until officials or the utility say it is safe. If the building appears structurally damaged, stay out and contact local authorities.
- Reenter cautiously. Return during daylight when possible. Use a battery-powered flashlight, not candles or gas lanterns. If the home has been closed for several days, the CDC advises entering briefly to open doors and windows, then airing it for at least 30 minutes before staying inside for an extended period.
- Keep clear of water and electrical hazards. Never enter standing water to reach an electrical switch, and never use an electrical appliance while standing in water. If the main power can be turned off from a dry location, turn it off. If it cannot, call an electrician. Do not use wet electrical devices.
- Have the electrical system checked. An electrician should assess a potentially damaged system before power is restored or cleanup equipment is connected. Contact the utility if service or a hazard requires its attention.
Floodwater can bring sewage and other contaminants into a home. Wear rubber boots when working in wet areas, and avoid contact with floodwater wherever possible.
How do I remove standing water safely?
Only operate electric pumps or vacuums after an electrician has determined that electrical use is safe. The CDC lists a wet-dry shop vacuum, a carpet-cleaner vacuum function, an electric water-transfer pump, and a sump pump as possible water-removal tools. Choose equipment appropriate to the amount of water, and keep it away from standing water unless its instructions and the electrical assessment make its use safe.

If power is unavailable or unsafe, a portable generator may power water-removal equipment. Run gasoline-powered equipment outdoors at least 20 feet from doors, windows, or vents. Never run a generator in a home, basement, garage, porch, or other enclosed or partly enclosed area.
How do I dry out my house after a flood?
Start drying as soon as it is safe. The CDC recommends cleaning and drying the home and wet belongings within 24–48 hours if possible. Open doors and windows when weather permits, and use fans and dehumidifiers once electrical use is confirmed safe. Position fans at a window or door to blow air outdoors, not farther into the house, to help avoid spreading mold.

- Fix leaks and keep outdoor water from draining back into the house.
- Keep roof and gutter runoff away from the foundation, and make sure the ground slopes away from the home.
- Drain and ventilate crawl spaces so they can dry.
Drying quickly reduces the opportunity for mold to grow, but the 24–48-hour target is not a promise that mold will be prevented. Flooding, trapped moisture, and local conditions can affect how long drying takes.

Decide item by item: consider whether it is porous, whether it contacted sewage or floodwater, and whether it can be cleaned and dried promptly. The CDC advises throwing away items that cannot be cleaned or dried quickly. Examples include mattresses, carpeting and padding, rugs, upholstered furniture, cosmetics, stuffed animals, baby toys, pillows, foam-rubber items, books, wall coverings, and paper products.

Discard drywall and insulation contaminated by sewage or floodwater. Clean salvageable hard surfaces and objects thoroughly with hot water and laundry or dish detergent. CDC examples include flooring, concrete, molding, wood and metal furniture, countertops, appliances, sinks, and plumbing fixtures. Whether a particular item can be saved depends on its material, the contamination, and whether it can be dried promptly.

The CDC recommends at least a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator, protective gloves made of non-latex material such as vinyl, nitrile, or rubber, and goggles that provide complete eye protection. Rubber boots are also useful in wet areas. For extended removal work such as removing moldy drywall, a half-face or full-face respirator may be appropriate.

People with allergies, immune suppression, underlying lung disease, asthma, or COPD should not take part in mold cleanup. The CDC also advises people with asthma, COPD, or immune compromise not to stay in a moldy home while it is being cleaned. Protective equipment does not make a structurally unsafe building or a large contaminated cleanup safe for an untrained person.

On hard surfaces, the CDC says mold may be cleaned with household products, soap and water, or a bleach solution containing no more than 1 cup of household laundry bleach per 1 gallon of water. Open windows and doors before using bleach, ventilate the area, and follow the product label. Never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleaner.
Removing visible mold alone does not address the cause. Dry the structure and belongings, repair leaks, and prevent water from collecting or draining back into the home. If mold is present in a system that moves air through the house, do not run that system until it has been checked and cleaned.
Can I turn on my air conditioner after a flood?
Do not turn on an HVAC system that may have taken on floodwater or become mold-contaminated. Mold in HVAC equipment can spread through the home. The CDC recommends having it inspected and cleaned by a maintenance or service professional experienced in mold cleanup, and using it only when that professional considers it clean and safe.
