A breach notice does not prove that anyone has misused your information. The right response depends on what was exposed and whether you find suspicious activity. This U.S.-focused checklist is general information; protections can vary by account, circumstances, and applicable law.
1. Verify the breach notice safely
Do not click an unexpected link in an email or text, or rely only on a phone number supplied in the message. Instead, visit the firm’s official website by entering its address yourself, use its official app, or call the number printed on your bank card or statement. The CFPB warns that scammers impersonate financial institutions and government agencies; contact them through official websites and phone numbers: CFPB identity-theft guidance.

Once you reach the firm, ask:
- What specific information was exposed, and when did the incident occur?
- Which account, card, login, or access device may be affected?
- What has the firm already done to protect you, and what should you do next?
- How can you reach its fraud department directly?
- Does the notice offer free credit or identity monitoring or identity-theft insurance, and what exactly does the offer cover?
The FTC directs people who receive a breach notice to IdentityTheft.gov/databreach for recovery guidance.

If the firm offers a free protection service
You can consider the free monitoring or insurance offered by the affected organization, as the FTC notes. Read the terms to understand what information and events are covered, for how long, and whether the service costs anything after an introductory period. A monitoring offer does not replace securing existing accounts or checking for unauthorized activity.
3. Secure accounts and keep watching them
Use the bank, card issuer, credit union, or other affected firm’s official fraud channel to ask what protections fit your situation. Depending on what was exposed, the firm may advise replacing a card or access device, securing or closing an account, or changing access credentials. Review recent transactions now, then keep checking activity and subsequent statements. A credit freeze can make it harder for someone to open new credit in your name, but it does not stop unauthorized withdrawals or charges on existing accounts. The FTC’s guidance on credit freezes and fraud alerts explains that these tools address access to credit files, not activity on current bank or card accounts.
4. Check your credit and choose a freeze, fraud alert, or both
A freeze and a fraud alert are different tools. A freeze restricts prospective creditors’ access to your credit file; a fraud alert asks businesses to take extra steps to verify your identity before granting new credit. You can use both. Compare their setup and limits before deciding:

| Option | What it does | Setup and duration | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credit freeze | Restricts prospective creditors’ access to your credit file, which can make it harder to open new credit in your name. | Free. Contact Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion separately. It remains in place until you lift it. | Does not stop withdrawals or charges on existing accounts. You may need to lift it temporarily when applying for credit. |
| Initial fraud alert | Asks businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit. | Free. Place it with one nationwide bureau; that bureau must notify the other two. It lasts one year and may be renewed. | Does not block access to your credit report. |
| Credit or identity monitoring | Reports specified changes to credit files or other databases, depending on the service. | Terms, coverage, duration, and price depend on the provider; the affected firm may offer a service free. | Coverage varies. It does not replace checking existing accounts or reporting fraud. |
The FTC explains how to place freezes and fraud alerts. A freeze does not affect your credit score, and placing or lifting one is free. If you apply for credit while frozen, you may need to lift the freeze for the lender.
5. If you find identity theft, start the recovery process
Suspicious activity changes the response from precaution to recovery. Report identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov to get an FTC Identity Theft Report and a recovery plan. The FTC’s recovery steps also recommend contacting companies where fraud occurred and asking their fraud departments to close or secure affected accounts.

- Report the identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the recovery plan.
- Contact every company where you found fraud. Ask it to secure or close the affected account and explain how to dispute the transactions or account.
- Dispute unfamiliar accounts or entries with the relevant company and credit bureau. Keep copies of notices, statements, messages, dates, and case numbers.
- Consider an extended fraud alert or a credit freeze. The FTC says an extended fraud alert lasts seven years and is available to people whose identity was stolen, subject to reporting requirements.
- Check your credit reports regularly. IdentityTheft.gov says you can check them weekly for free through AnnualCreditReport.com.
6. Report unauthorized electronic transfers promptly
If you see an electronic transfer you did not authorize, contact your bank or credit union promptly using its official fraud number. Follow the institution’s instructions for reporting it, and keep copies of statements and communications. Do not wait for a monitoring service to flag the transaction.
For covered electronic fund transfers, the CFPB says you generally must notify the institution within 60 days after it sends the periodic statement showing the unauthorized transfer to avoid liability for later transfers. If a debit card or access device was lost or stolen, different timing rules may apply. The institution generally has ten business days to investigate after notice, subject to the applicable rules and circumstances. See the CFPB’s guidance on unauthorized electronic fund transfers and its linked Regulation E. These are not guarantees of reimbursement: the account and transaction type, timing, and applicable law matter.
7. Know what monitoring can—and cannot—tell you
Credit monitoring may alert you to specified changes in a credit file. It does not necessarily detect withdrawals from a bank account or every misuse of a Social Security number. Identity monitoring may scan other databases, but coverage depends on the service. Before relying on one, ask which databases and events it checks, how often it checks them, which credit bureaus it includes, and what it will cost. The FTC discusses credit monitoring and identity-theft protection services.
Use monitoring as one layer, not as a substitute for reviewing transactions and statements, protecting existing accounts, and using a freeze or alert when appropriate.
