What to Do About Foot Pain After Walking

Rest, raise and ice a mildly painful foot, choose roomy comfortable shoes, and know which symptoms call for medical attention.

If your feet hurt after walking, stop or reduce the activity that brings on the pain, rest and raise the foot, and use a towel-wrapped ice pack for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours. Wear comfortable shoes with room for your toes, a low heel and a soft sole. Get urgent medical advice for severe pain, inability to walk, a changed foot shape, a snap or grinding sound after an injury, or a hot, swollen foot. Pain location can offer clues, but it cannot confirm a cause.

Why might your feet hurt after walking?

Foot pain after a walk can be related to overuse, footwear, an injury or another condition. Where it hurts and when it starts may help describe the problem to a clinician, but symptoms alone do not establish a diagnosis. The NHS advises: “Do not try to diagnose the cause of pain yourself.”

What the location and timing may suggest

Heel or arch

Sharp pain between the heel and arch that is worse on the first steps after sleep or rest, eases as you move, and then worsens after prolonged standing or walking can fit the pattern of plantar fasciitis described by the NHS heel-pain guidance. Pain at the back of the heel, especially with ankle or calf pain, may be associated with Achilles tendonitis. Sudden severe heel pain, swelling, a pop or snap, or difficulty walking needs prompt assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Ball or bottom of the foot

Possible explanations listed by the NHS guidance on pain in the bottom of the foot include a sprain after intense or repetitive exercise, bursitis, bunions, skin problems and plantar fasciitis. Burning or shooting pain near the toes, sometimes described as feeling like a small stone is in the shoe, can occur with Morton’s neuroma. These are examples, not a complete list or a way to identify the cause at home.

Top of the foot

Exercise, tight footwear, a sprain or strain, fracture, tendonitis, osteoarthritis, gout or referred nerve pain may be among the explanations for pain on top of the foot, according to the NHS guidance on pain in the top of the foot. Red, hot, swollen skin with severe tenderness warrants urgent assessment.

Pain after a sudden increase in activity

If you recently increased your walking or other activity, take persistent, focal pain seriously. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says stress-fracture discomfort may initially appear only near the end of activity and last briefly afterward; worn or poorly cushioned footwear may increase risk. This pattern does not prove a stress fracture, but pain that persists or worsens merits clinical advice. Being able to put weight on the foot does not rule out a fracture: some foot fractures still allow it, according to Mayo Clinic’s broken-foot guidance.

  • Reduce the strain: Rest and raise the foot when possible. Avoid long periods of standing or walking, and pause sports or other activities that seem to trigger the pain.
  • Apply wrapped ice: Put an ice pack inside a towel and apply it for up to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours. Do not place ice directly on the skin.
  • Choose comfortable footwear: Look for room for the toes, a low heel and a soft sole. Soft insoles or pads are optional comfort measures, not a guaranteed treatment for every cause of pain.
  • Consider gentle movement only if appropriate: Gentle foot or ankle stretches are an option if they do not cause pain. Do not stretch or exercise through pain, or before assessment if a significant injury may have occurred.
  • Check before using medicine if unsure: NHS guidance mentions paracetamol and ibuprofen gel or tablets. Suitability depends on the person and product; ask a pharmacist or clinician if you are uncertain.

Many forms of foot pain improve over a few weeks, but improvement is not guaranteed and persistent or concerning symptoms should be assessed.

When to get medical help

Seek urgent advice

Contact local urgent medical services for severe pain, inability to walk, a foot that has changed shape, or a snap, pop or grinding sound after an injury. A hot, swollen foot also needs urgent assessment, particularly if you have a high temperature or feel hot, cold or shivery. An open injury, numbness, or concern that the foot is not receiving enough blood calls for immediate medical care. In the UK, NHS guidance directs people with relevant urgent symptoms to NHS 111; elsewhere, follow local urgent-care guidance.

Arrange prompt clinical advice

Seek professional advice if pain is worsening, keeps returning, interferes with normal activities, or comes with tingling, loss of sensation or weakness. NHS guidance advises seeking help if foot pain has not improved after two weeks of home care. Do not wait for that point if symptoms are severe, worsening quickly or otherwise worrying. If you have diabetes and foot pain, contact a healthcare professional because foot problems may be more serious.
