First define the stream and capture duty, then compare suitable solvent, solid-sorbent, membrane, or hybrid configurations for performance, energy needs, site integration, cost, and a credible route for the captured CO₂.
What should you establish before comparing systems?
Build a facility-specific design basis before asking vendors to rank technologies. The International Energy Agency’s CCUS technology innovation identifies the initial and desired final CO₂ concentration, gas pressure and temperature, composition and flow rate, integration with the existing facility, and cost as factors that shape technology choice. Those conditions determine which approaches merit a closer look; they do not produce a universal ranking.

- Define the feed stream: record CO₂ concentration, other gas constituents, flow rate, pressure, temperature, and how those conditions vary over the operating profile.
- Set the required outcome: specify the target CO₂ concentration and capture duty. A system sized or assessed for one duty cannot be assumed to meet another.
- Map available utilities and process connections: identify available steam, heat, power, or pressure, as well as space and interfaces with existing equipment.
- Describe site constraints: identify retrofit constructability, feasible outage or tie-in windows, and the operating conditions the capture unit must accommodate.
- Define the CO₂ destination: determine what specification the receiving route requires and whether transport, use, or storage arrangements can be developed for the site.
Process location narrows the options too. Post-combustion systems treat exhaust after combustion; pre-combustion systems separate CO₂ from hydrogen and other constituents of syngas. The available stream, rather than a generic technology label, determines which comparison is relevant, as DOE/NETL’s capture overview explains.

Solvents, sorbents, and membranes separate CO₂ in different ways and therefore have different operating and performance questions. Hybrid configurations combine approaches; they should be evaluated as integrated process designs rather than assumed to inherit the advantages of each component.

| Approach | How it separates CO₂ | Facility-specific evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Solvent absorption | CO₂ is absorbed from the gas into a liquid carrier. | Regeneration energy, absorption capacity, tolerance to the actual impurities in the stream, aerosol mitigation, corrosion management, and heat integration. |
| Solid-sorbent adsorption | CO₂ adheres to a solid material and is later released during regeneration. | Selectivity and capacity on the actual stream; durability, oxidation resistance, attrition, and performance over repeated regeneration cycles. |
| Membrane separation | A permeable or semipermeable material selectively transports CO₂. | Permeability and selectivity; thermal and physical stability, contaminant tolerance, pressure drop, footprint, and performance at the intended capture duty, including partial capture if applicable. |
| Hybrid or other concepts | A hybrid combines approaches, such as sorbent and membrane processes. Other concepts include cryogenic and electrochemical approaches. | Integrated performance evidence for the proposed configuration and site. DOE/NETL describes potential process synergies, but a benefit should be treated as project-specific until demonstrated for the integrated design. |
The performance items in the table reflect DOE/NETL research priorities; they are evaluation dimensions, not guarantees for a particular commercial system. Ask for results tied to the facility’s gas composition, operating envelope, and target duty, and establish what was measured, at what scale, and under what conditions.
How should you compare performance, energy, and integration?
Compare candidate systems against the same design basis and operating assumptions. A capture result detached from the facility’s pressure, temperature, impurities, flow profile, and target concentration is not enough to establish that the system fits the site.

DOE/NETL’s priorities are useful prompts for technical due diligence, not proof that one family will outperform another at a particular plant. Require the vendor to distinguish demonstrated results from projections and to explain how the evidence transfers to the facility’s stream and operating profile.

Assess cost on a consistent site-specific basis. Retrofit constructability, equipment footprint, integration, operating profile, and utility needs can affect the project alongside capture performance. Compare alternatives using shared assumptions for energy prices, operating hours, capture rate, financing basis, project boundaries, and uncertainty ranges; otherwise, apparent cost differences may reflect different inputs rather than different systems.

DOE describes techno-economic analysis (TEA) as a key tool for assessing technology against cost and performance targets. Sensitivity analysis can show which assumptions most influence cost, but TEA does not rigorously optimize an operating configuration. Treat a screening estimate as a way to identify questions and compare scenarios—not as a substitute for detailed site engineering or a project quote.
Use retrofit databases as screening tools
NETL’s Industrial Carbon Capture Retrofit Database (Industrial CCRD) covers industrial point sources and allows users to work with study assumptions or provide inputs. NETL says the database is pre-populated based on U.S. EPA Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program data, and that its associated reports and databases are periodically updated as technology cost and performance information changes. Check the version and assumptions in the current database before using an estimate; a database result is not a facility-specific quote.
A NETL announcement in 2022 described a study update spanning ammonia, ethylene oxide, ethanol, natural gas processing, coal-to-liquids, gas-to-liquids, cement, hydrogen refining, and iron and steel. That list describes the scope reported at that time, not necessarily the coverage or assumptions in the current database.
Separate screening from engineering
NETL references engineering-scale tests and front-end engineering design (FEED) studies as parts of industrial capture development. Ask project teams to identify the maturity of each performance and cost estimate, its system boundaries, assumptions, and uncertainty. A screening analysis can help narrow candidates; site-specific engineering is needed to establish constructability, integration requirements, and a credible project basis.

What must be in place for the captured CO₂?
Capture is only one part of the project. DOE/NETL identifies pipeline transport followed by underground injection for long-duration storage, conversion into products, and enhanced hydrocarbon recovery as possible pathways. Their mention does not establish that any route is permitted, available, economical, or suitable at a particular facility.
Develop the destination and logistics alongside the capture design. Confirm the intended route, receiving infrastructure, CO₂ specification, contractual arrangements, and applicable regulatory requirements using sources relevant to the project’s jurisdiction. Without a feasible downstream route, a technically suitable capture unit does not by itself establish a viable end-to-end project.
How large is the industrial emissions context?
For scale, the U.S. Department of Energy/National Energy Technology Laboratory reported that the U.S. industrial sector accounted for over 1,300 million tonnes of CO₂ in 2020. This is a dated, sector-wide U.S. figure—not a current-year estimate, a global total, or a measure of emissions from any individual facility.
