What to Consider Before Retiring Early to Care for a Parent

Before retiring early to care for a parent, compare continued work, job-protected leave and retirement using a documented care plan, health-coverage costs, taxes, Social Security and long-term cash-flow scenarios.

Retiring early can make you available for a parent, but it can also permanently reduce your earnings, retirement contributions, insurance options and future Social Security benefit. Before resigning, compare three workable paths—keep working with a redesigned schedule or shared care, use leave and employer benefits, or retire—and test each against the parent’s likely care needs, household cash flow and a longer-than-expected caregiving period.

This is a U.S.-focused planning guide, not individualized financial, tax, legal or medical advice. Your state, employer, age, savings, insurance, the parent’s finances and the diagnosis or disability all change the answer.

Start with a three-path decision, not a resignation date

Path What it can preserve What to test
Continue working with changes Salary, employer health insurance, retirement contributions and the option to return to normal hours Whether a predictable schedule, remote work, reduced hours, family sharing, adult day care or paid help covers the weekly tasks
Use leave or employer benefits Your job connection and, in some cases, group health coverage How long unpaid leave lasts, whether paid leave or vacation can supplement it, and what happens when the leave ends
Retire early Time and flexibility for hands-on care Health coverage before Medicare, the size and duration of savings withdrawals, lost contributions and benefits, Social Security timing and a return-to-work option

For each path, estimate monthly take-home income, care expenses, insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs, retirement-account withdrawals, taxes, contributions you would stop making and benefits you would lose. Run at least two duration scenarios: the parent’s current needs and a materially longer or more intensive period. A plan that works for six months may fail if bathing, toileting, meals, transportation, supervision or overnight care become daily requirements.

Measure the care before measuring your retirement

Get a current clinical assessment

Ask the parent’s clinician or care team to describe diagnoses, functional limits, expected progression, medication management, mobility and safety risks, and which tasks require skilled care versus routine assistance. The assessment is a starting point, not a guarantee of how needs will evolve.

Turn needs into a weekly task list

Write every recurring task and its frequency: bathing, dressing, toileting, meals, shopping, transportation, medication reminders, appointments, housework, financial administration, communication with providers and emergency coverage. Record the time, travel and whether the task can be done by phone, shared with relatives or delegated to a paid worker. Include an overnight and weekend plan.

Identify who can share the work

List family members, friends, community programs, adult day health care, transportation services, home-care workers and respite options. Confirm availability, cost, licensing or program eligibility and the backup plan when someone is ill. Do not treat an informal promise as reliable coverage until the person agrees to specific hours and tasks.

Check job-protected leave before leaving your job

The federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) may provide an eligible employee up to 12 workweeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a 12-month period to care for a parent with a serious health condition. Group health benefits generally continue under the same conditions as if you had continued working.

Federal eligibility conditions

  • Your employer must be covered, generally including a worksite where it has at least 50 employees within 75 miles.
  • You must have worked for that employer for at least 12 months. The months need not be consecutive in every situation, so ask human resources how the rule applies to your record.
  • You must have at least 1,250 hours of service during the 12 months immediately before leave.
  • The parent’s condition must meet the FMLA definition of a serious health condition, supported by the requested medical certification.

FMLA is often unpaid, so calculate how you will pay normal household bills and any employee share of health premiums during leave. Ask HR which 12-month measurement method applies, whether intermittent or reduced-schedule leave is available, how much leave remains, and how benefits and payroll deductions are handled. State paid-leave laws, paid sick time, employer caregiver programs and collective-bargaining agreements may provide more than federal law; verify the rules where you live.

Price health coverage before Medicare eligibility

Health insurance is one of the largest risks in an early-retirement decision. Leaving a job can end subsidized group coverage before you or a spouse qualify for Medicare. Obtain written figures for continuation coverage, an individual plan, a spouse’s plan and any public-program option for which you might qualify. Compare premiums, deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, prescription coverage, networks and the maximum annual out-of-pocket amount. Include the possibility that a parent’s care requires frequent travel or out-of-network specialists.

Do not assume that the parent’s coverage will pay you for caregiving. Insurance terms, state programs and employer benefits differ. Keep a cash reserve for premiums and medical cost sharing rather than counting an unconfirmed benefit as income.

Understand what Medicare and Medicaid will—and will not—pay

Medicare does not pay for long-term care. Long-term care includes medical and nonmedical services for chronic illness or disability, such as help with bathing, dressing, toileting, meals, adult day health care and transportation. Medicare may cover a limited, qualifying skilled nursing or home-health benefit, but that is not the same as paying indefinitely for custodial assistance with everyday activities.

Medicaid may cover some long-term-care services when the parent meets financial, medical and other eligibility requirements in the state where the parent receives care. Rules, waiting lists, covered settings and estate-recovery provisions vary. Ask the state Medicaid agency or a qualified benefits counselor for current requirements. Private long-term-care insurance may help if the parent owns a policy whose triggers, elimination period, daily limits and covered services fit the need; read the policy rather than assuming it covers any home-care arrangement.

Model the retirement damage, not just today’s budget

Count lost earnings and contributions

Compare the salary you would give up with the amount you would otherwise contribute to a workplace plan or IRA, employer matching contributions, bonuses, paid leave accrual and future raises. A withdrawal plan must cover both caregiving expenses and ordinary living costs. Show the balance at regular intervals under conservative and adverse market assumptions; do not rely on a single average return.

Separate account access from sustainable income

List which accounts are taxable, tax-deferred or Roth, their withdrawal rules and the tax effect of each source. A large balance is not automatically a safe annual income stream. Include emergency repairs, your own future health costs, inflation and the possibility that the parent needs paid care later.

Coordinate Social Security carefully

Social Security claiming age and benefit amounts depend on your earnings record and claiming decision. They are separate from the decision to stop working. The Social Security Administration’s 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment Fact Sheet reports a 2.8% COLA for 2026 and states that the annual earnings limit for workers younger than full retirement age is $24,480. It also states that one dollar in benefits is withheld for every $2 of earnings above that limit. Those figures apply to the specified 2026 rules; they are not a universal benefit amount or a permanent threshold.

Before resigning, download your current earnings record and benefit estimates from the Social Security Administration, then test claiming at different ages with a qualified planner or benefits counselor. If you later work while receiving benefits, check the earnings test for that calendar year and your age. Recheck the rules whenever you update the plan.

Work through tax and payment questions before money changes hands

Could the parent be your tax dependent?

The Internal Revenue Service says a parent may qualify as a dependent only when all applicable tests are met, including support and gross-income rules. An IRS caregiver FAQ gives a $5,200 gross-income threshold for its 2025 tax-year example. That number is year-specific; confirm the threshold and every other test for the tax year on your return. Dependency status can affect certain credits or medical-expense treatment, but it is not automatic because you provide care or share a home.

Medical expenses you pay for a parent may be deductible only when the dependency, payment, filing-status and itemization rules are satisfied, and limits apply. Keep receipts and records showing what you paid and who was responsible for the expense. Ask a tax professional to review the current-year rules.

If the parent pays you, classify the arrangement correctly

Paying a family member for in-home care can create tax and household-employer obligations. The IRS says responsibilities depend on whether the worker is a household employee or is operating a separate business. Family status alone does not settle the classification. Put duties, hours, pay, reimbursements and termination terms in writing; keep time and payment records; and check current withholding, reporting and employment-tax rules before the first payment.

A written personal-care agreement can also reduce disputes among siblings, but it does not override Medicaid rules, benefit-program definitions or state employment law.

Use a practical decision worksheet

  1. Document care. Obtain the clinician’s assessment and create a seven-day task and time log, including travel, nights and backup coverage.
  2. Inventory resources. Record the parent’s income, assets, insurance, existing benefits, housing, transportation and available family help.
  3. Ask your employer. Get written information on FMLA coverage, intermittent leave, paid time off, disability or caregiver benefits, flexible scheduling, retirement-plan vesting and the cost of continuing health coverage.
  4. Build three cash-flow projections. Show continued work, leave and early retirement with income, taxes, premiums, care costs, withdrawals and contributions by month.
  5. Stress-test duration. Run a longer-care scenario, an increased-care scenario and a scenario in which paid help costs more or family help disappears.
  6. Set a review date. Reassess after a defined period or when the diagnosis, functional ability, housing, insurance or family availability changes. A reversible reduction in hours may be safer than an irreversible resignation.

Warning signs that early retirement is premature

  • The plan depends on Medicare paying for ongoing custodial help.
  • You have no confirmed health-insurance bridge until Medicare eligibility.
  • The budget excludes taxes, premiums, transportation, home modifications, respite or your own medical needs.
  • Care hours are unknown, no one is assigned backup coverage and the parent’s condition is changing quickly.
  • You would need to claim Social Security immediately without comparing other claiming ages or account-withdrawal strategies.
  • The plan assumes a tax deduction, Medicaid eligibility, paid family leave or caregiver wages without written confirmation.
  • Leaving work would eliminate a pension, vesting milestone, employer match or affordable coverage that cannot be replaced.

When retiring early can be the right choice

Early retirement becomes more defensible when the care schedule is documented, alternatives have been priced, health coverage is secured, the parent’s benefits and long-term-care options are understood, and the household can fund a prolonged period without relying on uncertain reimbursements. It should also leave room for your own rest, medical appointments, emergency savings and a path back to paid work if circumstances change.

In many households, the best answer is not a permanent yes or no. A staged plan—temporary FMLA, reduced hours, shared family shifts, paid respite and a scheduled review—can provide care while preserving income and options. Make the resignation decision only after the numbers and the care plan still work under the difficult scenario, not merely the optimistic one.
