Most Android phones can connect for basic functions such as texts and notifications, but streaming phone apps has a much shorter list of supported models. Your Chromebook, software versions, account settings, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and carrier can matter too.
What can an Android phone do with a Chromebook?
Google documents connecting an Android phone to a Chromebook to sync chat notifications and photos, send and receive text messages on the Chromebook, connect the Chromebook to the phone’s network, and unlock the Chromebook with the phone. These are useful capabilities, but they do not all share one compatibility threshold or setup requirement. Google’s phone-connection guide gives the general connection steps and notes that some features may be limited on work- or school-managed devices.

Which Chromebook feature matters most to you?
Texts, notifications, and photos
For basic phone connection, Google’s general instructions state that the Chromebook should run ChromeOS 71 or later and the phone Android 6 or later. Treat these as the thresholds on that guide, not a promise that every feature will work on every device; check the current instructions and software versions for the feature you want.
Streaming phone apps
If you want to use phone apps from your Chromebook, check the exact phone model before buying. Google lists these supported phones for Phone Hub app streaming, with Android 13 or later required for the listed Pixel and Xiaomi models:

The Phone Hub help page states a separate baseline of ChromeOS M89 or later and Android 5.1 or later for Phone Hub, but the listed app-streaming models have the additional model and Android-version conditions above. For streaming, the phone and Chromebook must be close to each other and on the same supported Wi-Fi network. Some entertainment apps may be affected by digital rights management (DRM). Google’s Phone Hub instructions contain the feature details and current model list.
Unlocking the Chromebook with your phone
Smart Lock depends on more than having a compatible Android phone. Google requires the phone to be connected to the Chromebook, signed in to the same Google Account, unlocked, and within Bluetooth range; Bluetooth must be on, and the phone must have a screen lock set. Review Google’s Smart Lock requirements before choosing this as a reason to buy a particular phone.

Using the phone’s internet connection
Instant Tethering can connect a Chromebook to a phone’s mobile data connection. Google’s requirements are ChromeOS 71 or later, Android 8.1 or later, the same Google Account on both devices, and a Chromebook that supports Instant Hotspot. The mobile operator may limit hotspot use or charge extra, and tethering can use more of the phone’s battery. Check Google’s network instructions and your carrier’s terms before relying on it.

What should you check before buying?
- Name the feature. Decide whether you mainly want texts and notifications, app streaming, Smart Lock, or Instant Tethering. Do not assume that support for one means support for all.
- Verify the exact phone model and Android version. For app streaming, compare the model with Google’s listed phones and confirm the required Android version. For other features, check the relevant Google help page rather than relying on a broad “Android compatible” claim.
- Check the Chromebook and its software. Confirm the Chromebook model supports the feature and that its ChromeOS version meets the feature-specific requirement. The stated minimums differ between Google’s general connection and Phone Hub pages.
- Confirm account and connection conditions. Some features require the same Google Account on both devices; Smart Lock also needs Bluetooth, proximity, an unlocked phone, and a phone screen lock. App streaming requires proximity and the same supported Wi-Fi network.
- Check carrier and management restrictions. Ask your mobile operator about hotspot limits or fees. If either device is managed by a workplace or school, an administrator may restrict phone features.
Does Quick Start affect phone compatibility?

How to choose
For basic connection, first match the phone and Chromebook to Google’s current requirements for the functions you care about. If app streaming is essential, treat the exact model list and Android version as a buying filter. If hotspot use is the priority, check Instant Hotspot support on the Chromebook and confirm your carrier’s rules. No overall phone ranking follows from these compatibility details: they do not compare price, performance, cameras, battery life, or current availability.
