Choose a laptop for the models and tasks you actually plan to run—not for a headline RAM number or GPU family. Start with the model file’s size, then budget for context memory, compute buffers, the operating system and other apps. Finally, confirm that your chosen inference software supports the laptop’s exact hardware and operating system.
Start with the work you want the laptop to do
Local AI can mean chatting with a language model, running a coding assistant, generating images, transcribing audio, or building a retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system. These are different workloads with different model and software requirements. The considerations here focus on local inference—running a model on your computer. The available evidence does not establish hardware requirements for training or fine-tuning.

Write down the task, the model or models you intend to use, how long a context you need, and whether you expect to run other applications alongside the model. Those choices determine what to check next.
Estimate memory from the actual model file
Parameter count alone is not enough to judge whether a model will fit. Check the downloadable file for the specific model build and quantization you plan to run. Quantization reduces model size, but methods differ in size and inference speed; a smaller file is not automatically the best choice for every use.

The llama.cpp quantization README gives Q4_K_M examples of 4.9 GB for an 8B model and 43.1 GB for a 70B model. These are example file sizes for those models and that quantization, not minimum laptop-memory recommendations. See the llama.cpp quantization README for the examples and its cautions about differences between quantization methods.
Allow for memory beyond the weights
The model file is only one part of inference memory use. Runtime allocation also includes the context’s key-value (KV) cache and compute buffers, among other allocations. A longer context changes cache requirements, and actual use depends on the model and runtime settings. A laptop with memory equal to a model file’s listed size therefore cannot be assumed to run that model reliably.
When comparing configurations, consider the memory available to the runtime—system RAM or Apple unified memory, as applicable—and discrete GPU VRAM where relevant. Include headroom for the intended context length, the operating system and concurrent applications. The llama.cpp maintainer discussion of memory allocations explains the distinction between weights, KV cache and compute buffers.

Verify support for the exact laptop and runtime
Hardware capability matters only if your chosen inference software can use it. Check the runtime’s current documentation for the operating system, GPU and backend combination in the specific laptop you are considering. Drivers and GPU generation can also affect compatibility.
- Ollama: its GPU documentation lists acceleration paths including Apple Metal and NVIDIA GPUs.
- llama.cpp: its project README describes Apple Silicon Metal, CUDA, AMD HIP and hybrid CPU/GPU inference. Hybrid inference is an available approach, not a guarantee of a particular speed.
Do not assume support for one runtime means support for another, or that a GPU family name establishes compatibility for every model and software setup.
Compare Apple Silicon and discrete-GPU laptops by workload
Apple Silicon systems use unified memory, while many discrete-GPU laptops have separate system memory and GPU VRAM. Compare the memory configuration against your model and context needs, and confirm that the runtime supports the hardware. Neither category is a universal winner based on the available evidence.

Ollama announced preview use of Apple’s MLX framework on Apple Silicon. In that announcement, it reported a test on March 29, 2026, using Alibaba’s Qwen3.5-35B-A3B model quantized to NVFP4 and comparing it with Ollama’s earlier Q4_K_M implementation. This is a vendor-reported result for that specific test; it does not establish a general performance comparison between Apple Silicon and discrete-GPU laptops. Details are in Ollama’s MLX announcement.

For each exact laptop configuration, also check:
- Cooling and sustained power: long inference sessions may put different demands on a laptop than short bursts. Compare measurements for the exact models under comparable conditions; a GPU name alone cannot tell you how it performs in a particular chassis.
- Portability and battery life: consider these if you will work away from an outlet, and look for testing relevant to the exact configuration.
- Upgradeability: verify whether memory and storage can be changed on the precise SKU rather than assuming configurations in the same product family are alike.
- Screen and keyboard: assess them against how you will use the laptop, especially for long coding or writing sessions.
- Total cost: compare the exact memory, GPU and storage configuration at current prices. A product name may cover several materially different SKUs.
No like-for-like laptop benchmark set or current SKU-level comparison establishes thermals, sustained performance, battery life, VRAM or price across the options discussed here. Treat those as checks to perform for specific laptops, not as grounds for a general ranking.
A practical comparison sequence
- Define the workload. Note the task, candidate model, desired context length and whether other demanding apps will run at the same time.
- Find the actual model file. Check its size and quantization instead of using parameter count as a proxy.
- Budget for runtime memory. Account for weights, KV cache, compute buffers and other active applications.
- Confirm software support. Verify that the runtime, operating system, drivers and exact GPU or Apple hardware work together.
- Compare complete laptop configurations. Check available system memory and GPU VRAM where applicable, storage, cooling, sustained power, battery, portability, upgrade options and current price for each SKU.
This process helps narrow the choices without treating a model-file size as a hardware minimum or mistaking a vendor-specific test for a general laptop ranking.
