What to Compare When Buying a Graphics Card

Choose a graphics card by matching benchmark conditions to your workload, checking VRAM and system compatibility, and comparing current local prices.

Compare graphics cards against the games or applications you actually use, at the resolution and settings you want—not just by model name or headline specs. The key checks are like-for-like performance, workload-appropriate VRAM, power and physical compatibility, current local price, and any features your software or display needs.

Start with your workload and display

Before comparing models, write down what you run and what you expect from it: the specific games or applications, target resolution, image-quality settings, and desired refresh rate. A card that suits competitive play at 1080p may not be the right fit for demanding games at 4K, and application performance can differ from game performance.

Use a broad performance hierarchy to narrow the field, then check results for the workloads that matter to you. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 graphics-card hierarchy spans three generations of NVIDIA and AMD cards as well as Intel Arc B-series GPUs. Treat it as an orientation tool: read its test conditions and update date, and verify important choices against individual game or application results.

Compare performance on equal terms

Benchmark numbers are useful only when the comparison is fair. Match the game or application, resolution, quality settings, and rendering mode. A result at 1080p with standard rendering is not directly comparable to one at 4K with ray tracing enabled.

  • Native rendering: Use results at the resolution you intend to play, with the same settings. This is the clearest basis for comparing conventional rendering performance.
  • Ray tracing: Compare ray-tracing results separately. Performance can change substantially when this feature is enabled.
  • Upscaling: Label results that use an upscaling mode and compare them with the same mode and output resolution where possible.
  • Frame generation: Keep generated-frame figures separate from native frame-rate results. They describe a different rendering experience and should not be presented as directly equivalent.

AMD’s Radeon comparison tool reports comparisons for popular games and settings, but AMD says its figures come from internal lab testing. The company also cautions that results vary and that the tool may contain inaccuracies or omissions. Use it as a vendor comparison, not as neutral independent testing. PassMark’s graphics-card charts are based on PerformanceTest results submitted by users; that user-submitted data answers a different question from a controlled review test.

Judge VRAM by the workload, not as a speed rating

Video memory (VRAM) holds textures, shaders, and other assets used by a game or application. Capacity matters when a workload and its settings need more memory, but a higher VRAM number alone does not tell you how fast a card is. Compare capacity alongside benchmark results and the card’s other specifications.

TechRadar’s March 29, 2025 guide offers 8 GB for 1080p, 12 GB for 1440p, and 16 GB for 4K as editorial rules of thumb—not universal minimums or guarantees. Actual needs depend on the game, settings, and workload, so use these figures only as an initial filter.

AMD provides a specific example of why context matters: it reports 11.7 GB peak usage in Far Cry 6 at native 1440p, maximum settings, with ray tracing enabled. That vendor test used an RX 6750 XT with driver 23.4.3 and compared it with an RTX 4060 Ti 8 GB using driver 531.79 on May 16, 2023; results vary by configuration. It is evidence about that test, not a forecast for every game. AMD’s product comparison page lists the Radeon RX 9070 XT with 16 GB GDDR6; that specification does not by itself establish performance or suitability for a particular workload.

Check power, connectors, and physical fit

Confirm that the exact card you plan to buy will work in your system. Graphics-card power and recommended system power are different figures: the first describes the card, while the second concerns the PC configuration as a whole. NVIDIA’s reference specifications list both, but NVIDIA notes that add-in-board manufacturers may vary from reference designs and that system power needs can differ with configuration.

  • Look up the exact board-partner model, not just the GPU family name.
  • Check the card’s power draw and the manufacturer’s recommended system power.
  • Verify the required power connectors and that your power supply has the appropriate connections.
  • Check the card’s length, thickness, and other dimensions against your case and nearby components.

Do not assume every card built around the same GPU has identical power or dimensions. Board designs can differ, so use the model-specific manufacturer specification before purchasing.

Compare current price with comparable performance

MSRP does not tell you what a card costs at checkout. Check current prices in your region, then compare price against performance measured under the same workload and conditions. A practical starting point is performance per unit of local street price; also account for memory capacity, power use, and features that you will actually use.

Prices, stock, and benchmark standings change, so a value judgment needs a date and market. Without a current regional price check, there is no reliable universal “best value” winner. Recheck the exact card’s price and availability when you are ready to buy.

Weigh features that affect your use

Features can change which card is the better fit, but only if they matter to your games, applications, or monitor. Compare ray tracing, supported upscaling and frame-generation technologies, application and driver support, display outputs, and the refresh rate you want to drive. AMD’s buying guidance distinguishes 1080p, 1440p, and 4K choices and includes memory, compute units, gaming or upscaling technologies, and—in its 1440p guidance—performance per dollar. Treat those as vendor guidance rather than a universal ranking formula.

A final card-by-card checklist

  1. List your main games or applications, target resolution, settings, and refresh rate.
  2. Compare independent results for those workloads, matching resolution, settings, and rendering mode; separate native, ray-traced, upscaled, and generated-frame results.
  3. Check VRAM capacity against the workload and settings rather than treating it as a performance score.
  4. Verify the exact card’s power, PSU recommendation, connectors, and dimensions against your PC.
  5. Compare current local street prices against like-for-like performance, then factor in relevant features and power use.

The right choice depends on the workload, the rest of your PC, and the price available in your market—not on a universal brand winner.
