What to Check When a Data Center Medium-Voltage Switchgear Pilot Fails or Trips

When a data-center medium-voltage switchgear pilot fails or a breaker trips, preserve the event evidence and identify whether protection, an external command, control power or breaker condition caused it before any reset or reclose.

Do not reset or reclose a tripped medium-voltage breaker as the first response. Preserve its relay, breaker, alarm and remote-status evidence; establish whether protection or another command caused the operation; then have qualified electrical personnel investigate against the installed equipment’s approved drawings, settings and manufacturer procedures. The right checks depend on what “pilot” means at your site: a commissioning or acceptance trial, a protection scheme, or a limited deployment. There is no universal pilot pass threshold or single switchgear configuration.

First: make the situation safe and preserve evidence

Follow the site’s emergency response and switching procedure to determine the affected equipment’s state. This is a triage framework for qualified electrical personnel and the teams coordinating them, not a procedure for working on energized medium-voltage gear. Schneider Electric’s Masterclad instructions and EvoPacT user guide require trained personnel and set out equipment-specific precautions, including PPE, lockout/tagout where applicable, verified de-energization, and attention to possible backfeeds. Use the rules for your jurisdiction and the manual for the equipment actually installed.

Before clearing targets or resetting, capture what the equipment and monitoring systems show. Preserve the relay targets and event record, available fault quantities, alarm and annunciator history, timestamps, breaker position and service/test status, trip flags, and remote SCADA or BMS indications. Record the pilot step underway and the switching state at the time. Exact records depend on relay configuration; Schneider’s EvoPacT guide notes that fault indications may be available locally or remotely through installed indicators and auxiliary contacts.

Do not disconnect a main trip source on energized equipment. The Masterclad bulletin also calls for de-energization and verification with a properly rated voltage-sensing device, and for restoring barriers, covers and interlocks after work. Apply these safeguards through the approved site procedure; do not treat this article as a switching order.

Determine what actually operated

A breaker-open indication does not by itself identify the cause. Reconstruct the event from relay records, breaker indications, sequence-of-events timestamps, available current and voltage measurements, and remote commands. Compare those records with the approved one-line and control logic. Establish whether a relay element asserted, an external trip command arrived, an upstream device also opened, and breaker auxiliary contacts confirm the opening.

Use the evidence to distinguish a sensed electrical fault from a control, supply, interlock, sensing or mechanism problem. The branches below are possibilities, not a diagnosis; verify them against project drawings and the installed relay and breaker manuals.

Possible branch Evidence to compare What it helps distinguish
Protection operation Relay targets and event record, fault quantities, enabled logic, and settings against the approved relay schedule and coordination study Whether a configured protection element operated on a sensed condition, or whether settings, inputs or logic warrant engineering review
External command or load shedding Event timestamps, external trip or load-shedding indications, control-system history, and relevant binary inputs Whether the breaker was ordered open by a command rather than by the expected protection element
Control-power or trip-path issue Approved control schematic, control supply and fuses, relay output, any fitted interposing or lockout relays, trip coil or release, wiring, auxiliary contacts, and trip-circuit supervision Whether the command path or its supply and status feedback behaved as designed
Breaker position, interlock or mechanism Service/test/disconnected position, secondary disconnect engagement, ready-to-operate and stored-energy indications, undervoltage-release supply, and interlock status Whether breaker condition or an interlock/release condition explains an inability to operate or an unexpected opening
CT/VT input or wiring issue Installed drawings and relay configuration, CT/VT circuit wiring, polarity and ratio, relay health, and applicable communications Whether the relay’s measured inputs and configured logic match the approved design

Schneider’s EvoPacT troubleshooting material lists several distinct possible scenarios, including inadequate undervoltage-release supply, an external load-shedding order, an unexpected opening-release order, overload, ground insulation fault, short circuit, and transients or closing onto a short circuit. The list is specific to that breaker family; it is not proof that any one cause applies to another model or installation.

Check the protection basis and trip path

Compare the relay with approved project records

Have the responsible protection engineer or qualified commissioning staff compare relay settings and enabled logic with the approved relay schedule and coordination study. Review the CT/VT circuits and wiring against drawings, as well as relay health, binary inputs and outputs, and communications where relevant. Do not change settings simply to suppress a repeat trip: a setting change can affect coordination and requires engineering review. Schneider’s Easergy P1V manual covers protection settings and commissioning for that relay family; the specific checks and tolerances must come from the installed relay documentation and project records.

Trace the control and trip circuit using the schematic

Qualified personnel should trace the intended path from relay output through any fitted interposing or lockout relay to the trip coil or release, including the DC or other control supply, fuses, terminal wiring, breaker auxiliary contacts and trip-circuit supervision. Check voltage only by the manufacturer-approved method with appropriately rated equipment. Schneider’s Masterclad startup guidance includes verification of trip voltage at breaker terminals, remote operation and indications, and interlocks during commissioning. These are product-specific instructions, not a universal test sequence.

A relay test set can be appropriate for verifying settings and electrical operation when recommended for the installed relay. It must suit that exact relay and be used by qualified commissioning staff under the equipment procedure. A test set does not replace checking the actual trip circuit, drawings, breaker condition or event evidence.

If it trips again on close, stop and reassess

A repeat trip after a close attempt is not a reason to keep cycling the breaker. Preserve the new event record and compare it with the first: did the same relay element operate, did an external command recur, and do the timestamps and measurements support the same initiating condition? A repeatable trip-on-close differs diagnostically from a one-time event, but neither pattern alone proves the cause. Check for a genuine fault, a control or wiring error, an incorrect configuration, or a breaker/mechanism issue through the approved drawings and manufacturer procedure.

Do not reclose until the initiating cause has been identified and cleared. Schneider Electric’s EvoPacT guidance explicitly says not to reclose before the trip cause is identified and cleared. The corrective action and any required inspection or testing must be determined by qualified personnel for the actual equipment and event.

After a short circuit or damaging event, inspect before restoration

A successful reset does not establish that a breaker is undamaged. For the EvoPacT family, Schneider’s post-trip guidance calls for checks of general breaker condition, primary contacts and vacuum interrupter assemblies, and specified electrical tests; it also identifies E-gap measurement as a way to evaluate contact erosion. These are specialist checks requiring trained personnel, suitable test equipment and the exact applicable manual. Do not apply EvoPacT procedures or limits to a different breaker model.

For Masterclad equipment, Schneider’s startup and maintenance instructions are likewise product-specific. Confirm the installed nameplates, relay and breaker models, drawings, settings, firmware and current manufacturer documentation before relying on any procedure.

Restore only after the cause is cleared and checks are complete

Before return to service, confirm that the corrective work is complete and that required post-fault inspections or tests have passed. Verify the recorded event and relay indications, trip path, interlocks, switching state, and that barriers and covers are restored. Then use the approved site switching and commissioning plan. Masterclad instructions describe a sequence for energizing incoming circuits, main breakers, feeders and loads for that product; that sequence is not a general rule for every data center installation.

For a failed acceptance or commissioning pilot, document the test step, expected result as defined in the project acceptance plan, actual indications, event timeline, equipment configuration and corrective action. Escalate unresolved protection, coordination, drawing or acceptance-criteria questions to the responsible electrical engineer and commissioning authority rather than inventing a pass threshold.

When to escalate instead of continuing checks

  • Suspected fault, damage, smoke, abnormal sound or repeated trip: keep the equipment in the state required by the site procedure and involve qualified electrical personnel before any further operation.
  • Protection and event evidence conflict: preserve records and escalate to the protection engineer; confirm relay logic, input circuits and time synchronization before concluding a relay malfunction.
  • Trip path, interlock or control supply is unclear: stop field testing until the approved schematic and equipment-specific method are available.
  • Cause remains unknown or a trip recurs: do not reclose to “see if it holds.” Arrange the required engineering review, inspection or manufacturer-authorized service.
  • Pilot criteria are unclear: use the approved project acceptance plan and commissioning authority to define the test result and disposition; no universal criteria are established for all switchgear pilots.
