Before a coding agent starts another meaningful change, review the exact candidate it has produced—not just its summary or confidence. Check what changed, which checks ran on that candidate, what remains unknown, and what the next approved slice includes. Then make Continue, Revise, or Stop affect what the runner is allowed to do.
What should a checkpoint show?
A useful checkpoint is a decision about a particular candidate, not a general approval of the agent or its conversation. It should make the proposed change inspectable and let you judge whether the evidence supports the next step.

- Candidate: identify the revision or other exact change being reviewed.
- Scope: describe what it changes and what it does not authorize.
- Checks: name each test or scenario, report its result, and say which candidate it ran against.
- Open gaps: disclose important checks that have not run or behaviors that have not been reviewed.
- Next slice: state what the agent will do if approved, including boundaries on files or actions.
- Decision: offer Continue, Revise, and Stop with distinct consequences.
Evidence should be stated at the level actually checked. A test that a preference is saved does not establish that the browser interface behaves correctly. A browser interaction does not, by itself, establish keyboard or screen-reader behavior.
How should Continue, Revise, and Stop work?
Continue: authorize only the named next slice
Continue accepts the reviewed slice and permits the specifically described next slice. It should not silently authorize unrelated file changes or a deployment. If approval can unleash broader work than the checkpoint describes, the approval is not meaningfully bounded.

Revise: require a new candidate review
Revise means change the target before further work begins. Once the candidate changes, reviewers should reassess which earlier checks still apply. A result from an older candidate should not automatically be presented as evidence for the edited one.
Stop: block new work, then reconcile what was issued
Stop should prevent the runner from scheduling new work and show what commands or actions have already been issued, along with what is still uncertain. A button labeled Stop does not, on its own, prove that an in-flight command was cancelled, a file write was undone, or a deployment was reversed. Those outcomes depend on executor behavior and require explicit reconciliation.

What does a checkpoint look like in practice?
Consider a hypothetical change to a “pause notifications” control. The first slice adds the toggle and saves the preference; a later slice would change the notification list UI. A checkpoint between those slices might read:

This is an illustrative workflow, not a report of a real test run or a feature of a particular product. Its value is that the reviewer can accept the limited next step, ask for a missing scenario, or stop without confusing the proposed UI work with the already-reviewed preference change.
How should checks remain attached to the right candidate?
Record the candidate identifier alongside each result. If an edit produces a new candidate, identify which checks remain applicable and rerun or review the ones affected by the change. Do not carry a prior “passed” label forward without explaining its relationship to the current candidate.

Make missing evidence visible rather than burying it in a general status. A reviewer should be able to request, for example, the browser reload scenario or a focused accessibility fix and then review the resulting candidate. Passing checks establish only the behavior those checks actually covered; they are not proof that every relevant path works.

The official crystl CLI documentation, updated October 1, 2026, describes crystl abort as interrupting an active agent turn. For a current held approval, the documented behavior differs by agent: Claude uses its abort path; for Codex, crystl denies the tool and sends Escape followed by Ctrl-C. Without a current held approval, it sends Escape followed by Ctrl-C.

That documentation describes an interrupt mechanism; it does not establish atomic cancellation of in-flight work, rollback of effects, or a checkpoint card implementing the workflow above. Treat Stop as a request to halt new work unless the executor explicitly establishes what happens to commands and effects already underway.
How much review is appropriate?
Scale the checkpoint to the risk and consequence of the next change. A one-line copy edit may need only a compact description and a bounded approval. Changes to saved preferences, browser behavior, or a user’s next action merit closer scrutiny of scope and relevant scenarios. The key is not a universal amount of ceremony; it is enough specific evidence and control for the reviewer to understand what is being accepted.
