To buy a used digital camera wisely, assess the exact model and system you need, then inspect the individual camera’s condition, functions, history, included equipment, and seller terms. Shutter count is useful context—not a universal pass-or-fail number and not proof that a camera is sound.
Before you meet the seller or place an order
Confirm the exact camera model and what the listing includes. A body-only listing is not the same deal as a kit with a lens, battery, charger, caps, and other accessories. Ask the seller how the camera was used, whether it was dropped or exposed to moisture, and whether the shutter, sensor, mount, or main board has been repaired. For a claimed major repair, ask for documentation.

For a remote purchase, request recent photos of the actual unit and, if possible, an original test image. A listing description or cosmetic grade cannot substitute for evidence about the individual camera.

Look closely at corners, the grip, screen hinge, viewfinder housing, battery door, hot shoe, tripod socket, ports, card slots, and lens mount. Check for dents, corrosion, looseness, or signs of impact or liquid exposure. Ordinary paint wear is different from a dent near the mount or evidence of moisture, which may point to a more consequential problem.

Check the sensor without touching it
Take a photo of a plain, bright surface using the highest available f-number, then inspect the image for dark spots. This can reveal dust on the sensor, but a spot in the test image alone does not establish permanent damage. Sony’s cleaning guidance says, “Don’t touch the surface of the image sensor or blow on it too hard.” See Sony’s sensor-cleaning guidance.
Do not touch or brush the sensor during an inspection. If cleaning is needed, follow the manual for that exact model. Canon’s EOS 50D manual, for example, warns that its sensor surface is extremely delicate and cautions against canned air or gas; those specific instructions should not be assumed to apply identically to every camera.

Test the camera’s functions
A camera that powers on may still have faults. Bring a compatible lens and suitable memory card if you can, and take several test images. Check the following items that matter to your intended use:
Recommended Free Tools
- Autofocus and shutter response, including burst operation.
- Buttons, dials, display, viewfinder, and playback.
- Card slots, ports, and flash, if fitted.
- Stabilisation, if fitted, and video recording if you plan to use it.
- Test images at magnification for focus, visible defects, or other unexpected issues.
Controls and capabilities vary by model, so consult the camera’s manual for model-specific checks. A quick power-on test will not exercise focus, burst shooting, ports, or every slot.
Rank #3
- 16 effective megapixel, 1/2.3-inch CCD sensor
- 3-inch TFT color LCD with wide viewing angle
- DIGIC 4 image processor
- 720p HD video in stereo sound with a dedicated movie button
- 24mm wide-angle lens with powerful 30x optical zoom and optical image stabilizer
How to interpret shutter count
Ask how the count was obtained and when it was recorded. If the manufacturer publishes a shutter rating for that exact model, use it as one point of context—not a guarantee of how long a particular camera will last. Do not apply a universal “safe” count across different models.
A low count does not rule out impact, moisture, or faults in other systems. Mechanical shutter count also may not capture the camera’s entire operating history: electronic-shutter use and video operation can complicate what the reported mechanical count tells you. Weigh the count alongside visible condition, function tests, use history, and repair records.
Rank #4
- 16MP Sensor: Captures detailed photos with a CMOS sensor for everyday shooting
- Optical Zoom: 5x optical zoom with a 28mm wide angle lens for flexible framing indoors or outdoors
- Full HD Video: Records 1080p video for travel clips, family moments, or simple vlogging
- Memory Support: Works with Class 10 SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards up to 512GB
- Rechargeable Battery: Included LB-012 lithium-ion battery charges in the camera over USB with the supplied adapter in about 2 hours; charge it for at least 4 hours before first use to maximize battery life
Assess the lens and the camera system
If the camera comes with a lens, inspect it for visible scratches, haze, fungus, or damage, and test its autofocus and controls on the body if possible. Confirm that the lens mount and electronic functions are compatible with the camera you intend to use. A problem with a replaceable lens does not by itself prove the body is defective, but any repair or replacement cost belongs in your estimate of the deal.
Also confirm that the included battery, charger, caps, and other stated accessories are actually present and usable. Missing items can change the total cost even when the camera body itself is in good condition.
Best Value
- Increased IR sensitivity for astrophotography
- 18.0 MP CMOS sensor, ISO 100-6400, DIGIC 4 Image Processor
- Vari-angle 3.0-inch Clear View LCD
- Remote controller adapter
- Compatible with EF and EF-S lenses
Compare the complete deal, not just the asking price
When choosing between two used cameras, compare them on the same practical criteria:
- Sensor and image condition.
- Functional reliability: autofocus, controls, shutter, card slots, and ports.
- Wear, impact damage, and signs of moisture.
- Shutter count in relation to the exact model and the camera’s use history.
- Documentation for significant repairs.
- Lens mount, included lens, and accessories.
- Inspection opportunity, return terms, and any warranty offered.
- Total price after likely repairs or missing items.
Compare like-for-like examples and account for condition and included equipment. Seller terms vary by seller and location, so read the current listing and terms rather than assuming a universal return right or warranty. If important functions cannot be tested, or the seller’s account conflicts with what you observe, either price that uncertainty into the deal or walk away.
