What should I check before upgrading my Galaxy phone?
Start with the exact model number and the country where you bought the phone. “Ultra” covers multiple generations, and specifications or availability can vary by market. Samsung’s Ireland comparison, last updated 11 March 2026, cautions that models may vary by country. Use the comparison for your region where possible, rather than assuming one generation-to-generation change applies to every older Ultra.

- Condition and support: Note battery performance, screen and port condition, available storage, and the remaining software and security support for your exact model.
- Your actual use: Identify the limits you notice—such as low-light photos, charging time, storage, handling or performance in your usual apps.
- Total cost: Compare the local purchase price and any required accessories with the trade-in offer for your phone’s actual condition and the cost of repairing it.
- Transfer needs: List the content you need on the new phone and verify that it transfers before wiping or trading in the old one.
What is the difference between Galaxy S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra?
Samsung Ireland’s comparison lists several substantial similarities alongside changes to charging, camera specifications, dimensions and weight. These figures are for the models in that comparison; Samsung says models may vary by country.

Both models are listed with S Pen support. The S26 Ultra is listed as slightly wider and taller, but thinner and lighter than the S25 Ultra. If pocket fit or one-handed handling matters, compare the dimensions and weight with your current phone rather than assuming a newer model will feel smaller.

Will the camera changes matter to you?
The cited comparison lists a 200 MP main camera and 50 MP ultrawide for both phones. The telephoto sensor arrangement and apertures differ: the S26 Ultra has 10 MP and 50 MP telephoto cameras, while the S25 Ultra has 50 MP and 10 MP telephoto cameras. Samsung says the wider S26 Ultra apertures improve low-light photos and video. That specification and manufacturer claim do not establish that every owner will see a meaningful improvement in their own photos.
Base the decision on the shots you take. If you frequently photograph dim scenes or record video in low light, compare the new camera system against that specific need. If your current phone already handles your usual subjects well, changed sensor and aperture specifications alone may not justify replacing it.

Does a newer Ultra have better battery life?
Battery capacity and runtime are different measures. Samsung Ireland lists a typical 5,000 mAh battery for both the S26 Ultra and S25 Ultra. Samsung’s US page estimates up to 31 hours of video playback for the S26 Ultra—the same estimate it gives the S25 Ultra and one hour more than the S24 Ultra. Samsung says actual battery life varies with network, apps, usage, charging frequency and other conditions. Treat that figure as a manufacturer estimate under specified testing, not a promise of mixed-use runtime.

For an upgrade decision, pay attention to the battery in your own phone: how long it lasts during your normal day, whether it shuts down unexpectedly, and whether that limitation is disrupting use. Original capacity figures cannot tell you the present condition of an older device.

Check charging, storage and accessories before choosing a configuration
Samsung Ireland lists 60 W wired charging for the S26 Ultra and 45 W for the S25 Ultra. The comparison also lists S26 Ultra storage options of 256 GB, 512 GB and 1 TB. Check your current free space and the amount you expect to keep on the phone when choosing a storage tier.
Do not assume a charger listed alongside a phone delivers its maximum charging speed: Samsung’s comparison also shows a 45 W Super Fast Charger 2.0 accessory, while listing the S26 Ultra at 60 W wired charging. Confirm charger compatibility and what is included in the box for your region before buying an accessory.

Check support and the old phone’s condition
Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra Product Environmental Report states that the phone has IP68 water resistance and dust protection, and receives seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates from its global launch date. That is a commitment for the S26 Ultra; it does not establish how much support remains for a particular older Ultra. Check the exact model and region when assessing your current phone’s security-support horizon.

A swollen or badly degraded battery, damaged screen, unreliable charging port, inadequate storage or loss of security support can change the balance between repair, replacement and waiting. There is no universal repair-cost cutoff: compare a repair quote for your device with the actual local trade-in offer and net purchase cost of the replacement.
Plan the move before erasing or trading in your phone
Samsung says Smart Switch can move contacts, photos, videos, notes and calendar events to the S26 Ultra from iOS, wirelessly or by cable. The cited information does not establish that every application, setting, credential or protected file will transfer. Check the items that matter to you on the new phone before erasing the old one.
