Also establish whether you are receiving a discount on a new purchase, a separate payment, or only a recycling and haul-away service. Save the offer, your answers, the terms and the handover record before the appliance leaves your possession.
Start by identifying the transaction you are actually making
“Trade-in” can describe very different arrangements. An online form may produce a discount against a new appliance, a payment after assessment, or a collection service whose main benefit is responsible disposal. Those outcomes are not interchangeable, so read the offer page and terms before judging whether the amount is attractive.

- Purchase-linked discount: the value reduces the price of a specified new appliance. LG’s U.S. terms describe qualifying appliances exchanged for a discount connected to the identified new LG purchase.
- Post-inspection payment or exchange value: the amount is confirmed only after the appliance is checked. LG India’s exchange terms state that the final value follows evaluation.
- Recycling or haul-away: the service removes the old appliance, sometimes as part of a retailer or energy-program arrangement. U.S. Department of Energy guidance describes retailer and recycler collection arrangements, but it does not promise free pickup for every consumer.
Write down which of these applies, whether a new purchase is mandatory, and what you receive if the appliance fails assessment. A high headline figure may be less useful than a lower offer with clear collection and refusal terms.

Confirm that the appliance and your ownership meet the eligibility rules
Match the exact identity
Compare the appliance in your home with every field you submitted: category, brand, model or product number, capacity, age if requested, and any stated specification. Photograph the rating plate and serial number before collection. A mismatch can invalidate an offer even when the appliance looks similar to the one selected in the form.

Programs set their own categories and exclusions. LG U.S. limits its example program to qualifying appliances paired with a new LG purchase. Samsung Philippines says the old product must match the declared brand and specifications. These are program-specific conditions, not a universal definition of an eligible appliance.
Establish ownership and authorization
Check whether you must own the appliance outright. Some programs require the customer named on the order to surrender it; others may require authorization from a landlord, household owner or business. If you are disposing of an appliance for someone else, obtain written permission and ask the provider whether that arrangement is accepted. Keep a receipt, invoice or other ownership record if the terms request one.
Check condition requirements literally
Do not rely on a broad label such as “used” or “working.” Look for requirements covering power-on status, cooling or heating performance, missing parts, cosmetic damage, leaks, rust, cracked glass, error codes and evidence of modification. If the form asks whether the appliance is in working condition, answer based on its present state, not on an intermittent result or a repair you intend to make later.

An amount shown after an online questionnaire is not necessarily guaranteed. LG U.S. says its trade-in discount is subject to inspection and may be revised when the findings differ from the declaration. LG India’s exchange terms similarly state that the final quote follows evaluation. Those examples show why you should read the particular program’s inspection clause rather than assume every offer follows the same process.

Document what you declared
Save a PDF or screenshots of the completed form, the quoted amount, the date, the appliance details and the condition answers. Photograph all sides, the control panel, the model label and any damage. For a powered appliance, record a short video showing the relevant function without claiming a performance test the program does not require. This evidence lets you compare the assessor’s findings with your original declaration.
Ask how disagreements are handled
Find the exact rule for a lower assessment: can you decline the revised value, will the appliance be returned, is the original offer cancelled, or is collection final? Do not assume a remedy. Samsung Philippines states that a collected old product cannot be returned under that program. Another provider may use a different rule, so keep the answer tied to the terms for your order.
Check the collection schedule and preparation requirements
Collection is a practical handover, not just a shipping label. Confirm the date or time window, the collection address, the responsible company and the point where the appliance must be placed. Ask whether collection is synchronized with delivery of the replacement. Samsung Philippines requires the old product to be uninstalled and ready at the designated point during delivery; that requirement applies to its Philippines program.
Use this preparation checklist
- Empty the appliance and remove food, water, clothing, racks, shelves or other contents.
- Back up or remove any information stored on a connected display, control board, smart feature or removable media.
- Disconnect utilities only when safe and permitted. Refrigerators, gas appliances, built-in units and hard-wired equipment may require a qualified installer or technician.
- Ask whether doors, brackets, hoses, anti-tip fittings or other parts must remain attached for collection.
- Move the appliance to the stated handover point without blocking corridors, exits or shared access.
- Measure doorways, lifts and stairwells. Tell the collector about steps, narrow turns, parking restrictions or other access limits before the appointment.
Do not uninstall a built-in or gas appliance merely to meet an online instruction if doing so creates a safety risk. Get written clarification about who performs the disconnection and whether that work carries a charge.

Confirm what happens if delivery or pickup changes
When pickup is tied to delivery, ask what happens if the new appliance is delayed, delivered by a different crew or refused at the door. Obtain a rescheduling contact and find out whether the old appliance must remain available for a limited period. Keep the appointment confirmation and any revised instructions.
Understand the value, charges and timing
Read beyond the prominent amount. Determine whether it is deducted at checkout, credited after inspection, paid separately, or conditional on financing, a particular model or a promotional period. Check for collection, installation, cancellation, restocking or access charges. The public LG India exchange values, for example, are offer- and market-specific; they should not be treated as current universal prices.
Ask when the value becomes final and when money or credit is issued. If the amount is a discount, compare the replacement appliance’s total price, delivery and installation costs rather than comparing the trade-in number alone. If the transaction is a recycling service, assess the documented disposal benefit and any fee instead of treating it as a cash sale.
Compare two or more offers on the same terms
Use one worksheet for every provider. A table prevents a large headline credit from hiding a difficult collection or an uncertain inspection.

Mark any answer that is missing as a question to resolve before booking. Do not fill an unspecified table cell with an assumed industry practice.

Most large appliances do not contain the same personal data as a phone or computer, but smart appliances, displays and connected accounts can retain credentials, household information, usage history or Wi-Fi details. Review the manufacturer’s reset instructions, remove the appliance from your mobile app and erase accounts before handover. LG Electronics U.S.A.’s official terms put the responsibility plainly: “You are responsible for backing up and/or deleting data on your Qualifying Device.” That wording applies to its qualifying-device terms; it is not proof that every appliance program uses the same language.
Remove removable storage, paper documents, labels showing your address and any accessories you are not surrendering. Keep photographs of serial numbers for your own records, but do not publish them with your address.
Get disposal and handover evidence
At collection, record the date, the collector or carrier, the appliance model and its visible condition. Request a signed receipt or electronic confirmation stating what was taken. U.S. Department of Energy guidance says some rebate programs require documentation of proper disposal. That is a program design option, not a promise that every retailer or recycler supplies a certificate.
Retain the final invoice or credit confirmation, inspection result, cancellation message and disposal record together. If a warranty, rebate or environmental rule later requires evidence, these documents show what was surrendered and under which offer.
Know what to do when the collector refuses the appliance
Refusal can result from a model mismatch, unsafe access, an undeclared defect, missing parts or a preparation failure. Ask the collector to state the reason in writing and photograph the appliance in the condition presented. Do not sign a form saying the transaction completed if the appliance was not accepted.
Then consult the actual program terms for the next step. Possible outcomes include a revised value, a cancelled discount, a new appointment or no return after handover. Because remedies differ, use the provider’s stated process rather than relying on a general right to send the appliance back.

Apply basic online-shopping checks before you submit payment
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission advises online shoppers to check the seller and the terms, including the total price and refund policies. Apply that advice here: verify the legal seller or program operator, read the privacy and cancellation language, confirm the service area and use a payment method with a clear transaction record. Be cautious when a page hides the operator, demands unusual payment methods or offers a value that is not explained in the written terms.
Regional examples and their limits
The documented examples span three markets and should not be generalized:
- United States: LG’s example is a qualifying-appliance discount tied to a new LG purchase, subject to inspection; the customer is responsible for backing up or deleting data on the qualifying device.
- Philippines: Samsung’s example requires the old product to match the declared brand and specifications, be owned as required by the program, be uninstalled and ready at the designated point during delivery, and cannot be returned once collected.
- India: LG’s exchange example checks appliance identity and working condition at pickup, with the final exchange value set after evaluation.
- Energy-program arrangements: U.S. Department of Energy guidance describes possible retailer or recycler haul-away and disposal documentation, but availability depends on the specific program.
Before relying on any of these features, verify the current terms for your country, retailer and service area. An offer available in one market may not exist, or may use different definitions and remedies, elsewhere.
