What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Before you replace your smartphone, confirm that the exact minimalist phone you want can handle your carrier, navigation needs, payments, and essential messages. “Minimalist phone” is not a standard feature set: one model may offer directions but no popular chat apps, while another has no GPS or maps at all. Check the model and software version against the services you personally rely on before buying or transferring your number.
Will the phone work with your carrier?
Carrier compatibility depends on the phone model, carrier, region, and plan. Start with the manufacturer’s compatibility checker for the exact model and country. Then ask the carrier to confirm voice calls, SMS, mobile data, Wi-Fi calling, roaming, and activation on that device. Supported radio bands alone do not guarantee that every carrier feature will work.

Light says its checker lists supported carriers by region and model. For Light Phone III, its support guidance requires a compatible carrier and a 5G data plan; the phone can use 4G where 5G is weak or unavailable. The same U.S.-specific support page lists supported and unsupported carriers and cautions that many U.S. MVNOs are unsupported. Do not apply that list to other countries, and confirm current requirements directly with Light and your carrier before switching: Light Phone carrier questions.

- If you use a U.S. MVNO, ask explicitly whether that provider supports the exact model; Light says it cannot provide a complete list of carrier partners.
- Test service at home, work, on your commute, and in places you travel before relying on the new phone as your only phone.
Can you get directions when you need them?
“Maps” can mean live turn-by-turn navigation, route instructions with limited GPS, static maps, or no map support. Check what the specific model offers, whether route planning needs data, and what happens if GPS or mobile service is unavailable.

Light Phone: directions with practical limits
Light Phone’s Directions tool needs cell service or Wi-Fi to create a route. It can fall back to offline mode when GPS is unavailable, but that does not mean you can plan a new route without a connection. Light says the first GPS fix after a cold start can take up to 30 minutes, usually closer to 5–15 minutes, and recommends leaving the phone on and charging overnight to prime GPS. These are the manufacturer’s support estimates, not independent test results.
Light also warns that live GPS navigation sessions of around 35 minutes or longer can significantly affect battery life and make the device warm. For long trips, the company suggests considering a standalone GPS device. See Light Phone’s Directions Tool guidance before relying on it for a route where a delay or battery drain would matter.

Mudita Pure: no GPS or maps
Mudita says the Pure has no GPS support or map application and cannot install third-party apps. If you need phone-based navigation, that is a decisive limitation rather than a setting to enable later: Mudita support.
Will tap-to-pay, transit, and banking still work?
Do not assume that mobile data, a touchscreen, or an Android-based operating system means a phone supports contactless payments or a particular wallet. The manufacturer documentation cited here does not establish general compatibility across minimalist phones for tap-to-pay, transit passes, bank-app approvals, ticket QR codes, or identity checks.

- The Light Phone II is currently compatible with certain carriers in the US. Compatible carriers include: LIGHT, AT&T, T-MOBILE, VERIZON (except prepaid plans and Numbershare), TING, MINT, US MOBILE. It will not work with carriers that are not listed.
- Standalone minimalist phone that can be used to call and text. Group texting is supported
- The Light Phone II is built around a user-customizable menu of tools. All of the tools are custom-designed for our LightOS to ensure a thoughtful, and private user experience. Available tools currently include an alarm, a calculator, directions, a simple music player, notes/voice memo, calendar and a podcasts tool. The phone also supports hotspot tethering. We'll continue to release other utility-oriented tools, which will be available with software updates.
List the payment-related tasks you actually use, then verify each one with both the phone maker and the service provider. Ask whether your bank or transit agency requires an app, push approval, passkey, authenticator, or QR scan. If one of those methods is essential, keep a physical card or another tested option available until you have verified the replacement setup.
Light Phone III’s Rideshare tool illustrates why a specific payment feature should not be mistaken for a general-purpose wallet. Light’s support page says the tool is limited to Phone III running LightOS v582 or later and requires a Tremp account and payment-method setup through the dashboard. The page described a 10% service fee with a $2 minimum and a first-five-rides promotion when reviewed; fees and promotions may change, so check the current terms. This rideshare payment flow does not establish contactless wallet or transit-pass support: Light Phone Rideshare Tool.

Can you keep your messages and group chats?
Before switching, write down which channels matter: SMS, MMS, RCS, iMessage, WhatsApp, Signal, work chat, group threads, and image or audio messages. A phone may handle basic texts while leaving app-based conversations or particular media features behind.
Plan the number transfer from iMessage or RCS
Light advises people moving a number from a smartphone to disable iMessage and RCS associated with that number before switching. Those platforms are unsupported on non-smartphones, and leaving them associated with the number can mean messages are missed or do not arrive as expected. Follow the instructions for the phone and messaging service you are leaving: Light Phone carrier questions and Light Phone support.

Check app availability and privacy requirements
Mudita says the Pure uses SMS, which is not encrypted because the SMS standard does not support encryption. If you need encrypted conversations, do not treat SMS as an equivalent substitute: Mudita support.
Mudita’s support page says the initial Kompakt release does not include dedicated WhatsApp or Signal apps and has no app store for installing third-party apps. The page says future messaging enhancements depend on technical feasibility and user feedback; that is not a promise that either app will arrive. Check the current software and support documentation for the exact device before counting on an app-based service: Mudita Kompakt messaging support.
Confirm image messages by model
Light says Phone III can send images from its Album tool, while Phone II does not display incoming images. Check the model-specific behavior if pictures are important to your conversations: Light Phone Image Messages.
Use this pre-switch checklist
- Identify exact dependencies. List the calls, carrier features, routes, payment tasks, message types, work tools, and authentication flows you use. Mark any service that must work on the minimalist phone rather than on a retained smartphone.
- Verify carrier and plan. Use the maker’s checker for your country and model, then confirm voice, SMS, data, Wi-Fi calling, roaming, plan requirements, and activation with the carrier.
- Test navigation expectations. Find out whether the phone offers live guidance, offline instructions, static maps, or no maps. Check data needs, GPS acquisition, and long-trip battery and heat limits.
- Verify every payment service. Ask the bank, transit provider, ticketing service, or wallet provider whether the exact model is supported and whether the service depends on an app or approval method the phone lacks.
- Prepare messaging transitions. Disable iMessage or RCS if instructed for your move, and confirm which apps, group conversations, and media types the new phone can handle.
- Run real-world checks before retiring the smartphone. Test calls where you use them, ask essential contacts to send individual and group messages, and check any image messages or authentication codes you rely on. Keep a workable fallback for payment, navigation, or app-only tasks that have not been verified.
How to compare minimalist phones fairly
Compare the exact model and current software against your own tasks, not against the category label. A useful comparison records carrier and region support, plan requirements, navigation mode and data dependence, payment-service compatibility, messaging protocols and apps, and the fallback needed for anything the phone cannot do.
