Before switching to a low-cost NBN plan, compare the full cost over the same period, typical evening speed, what your address can actually receive, and any equipment or phone and alarm dependencies. Check the provider’s Critical Information Summary (CIS) and Key Facts Sheet, not just the advertised monthly price or maximum speed. A cheaper plan is a good fit only if its terms and likely performance meet your household’s needs.
Start with a like-for-like comparison
Put your current service and the proposed plan side by side. Record the ongoing price, any introductory offer and its end date, the busy-period download speed, the connection technology and any address-specific limit. Then check the contract and exit terms, equipment and setup costs, and whether the switch affects a home phone, alarm or service that relies on power.

Do not compare a promotional first-month price with another plan’s standard ongoing price. Compare both plans over the same length of time, using the prices that apply in each part of that period. If you do not have current quotes for both services, you cannot calculate a reliable saving from general market figures.

Use the CIS to check the plan price, contract length and fees for leaving early. Ask the provider directly about any setup fee, modem or other equipment charge, and the standard price after a promotion. Those charges and offers are plan-specific and can change, so do not assume that a price or fee quoted elsewhere still applies.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a useful comparison, total the charges that apply to each plan across the same period. Include the standard monthly rate for every month after a promotion ends, any one-off setup or equipment cost, and an early-exit fee if you might leave before a commitment expires. If the current plan has a fee to leave, include it when working out the cost of switching now. Keep those one-off costs separate from recurring monthly charges so the ongoing price remains clear.
Historical price data can help explain why a low-cost plan deserves scrutiny, but it cannot tell you what a particular service costs today. In a simplified comparison of major retailers, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) reported that prices for plans at 100 Mbps and below rose by $3–$7 per month between 2023–24 and 2024–25. In its 2025 analysis, customer-weighted 25 Mbps and 50 Mbps services were respectively $9.00 and $8.69 above the average available plan price in 2024–25. These are past aggregate comparisons, not current quotes or a prediction of your bill.
Compare typical evening speed with the way you use the connection
Look for the provider’s typical NBN download speed during the busy evening period, 7 pm to 11 pm. The ACCC says providers should advertise this measure. It is more informative about expected peak-time performance than a maximum or headline speed alone, but it is not a promise that every household will get that result.

| ACCC busy-period label | Associated typical download speed | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Evening Speed | Less than 15 Mbps | Expected busy-period download performance is below 15 Mbps. |
| Standard | At least 15 Mbps | The label corresponds to at least 15 Mbps during the busy period. |
| Standard Plus | At least 30 Mbps | The label corresponds to at least 30 Mbps during the busy period. |
| Premium | At least 60 Mbps | The label corresponds to at least 60 Mbps during the busy period. |
These labels describe expected busy-period download performance; they do not establish an individual household’s achievable speed. Compare the advertised figure for the specific plan rather than inferring performance from the label alone. Also consider whether uploads matter to you: frequent video calls, sending large files or other upload-heavy activity can make upload performance relevant even when download speed is the main plan headline.
Use household size as a starting point, not a guarantee
ACCAN describes NBN 25 as generally suitable for one or two people and NBN 50 for a household of three to four people. Treat that as broad guidance, not a guarantee or a statement about every current plan. How many people use the service at once, and what they do at the same time, affects the experience. Several simultaneous video calls, downloads or streams can place different demands on a connection than one person browsing alone.
Think through a normal busy evening: how many people are online, which activities overlap, and whether any work or household task depends on consistent uploads. Use those needs to decide what busy-period speed to compare. A low price is not a saving if the plan is too constrained for the household’s regular simultaneous use.

Confirm what your address can actually receive
An NBN plan’s advertised speed is not enough to establish what your particular service can deliver. Connection technology and local technical limitations can affect the maximum speed available at an address. The ACCC identifies copper wiring and fixed wireless as technologies where technical limitations are common.

Ask the proposed provider what connection technology serves your address, whether it knows of any speed limitation, and what happens if the line cannot deliver the plan speed. The ACCC says providers should disclose known limitations during signup or promptly after they learn about them. Get the answer in writing if a particular speed is important to your decision, and clarify what options or remedies apply if the service cannot meet the plan’s stated performance.
The ACCC’s guidance is that “Providers are responsible for resolving issues with NBN services on behalf of their customers.” That makes it important to raise an address-specific concern with the provider, rather than assuming you must diagnose and resolve an NBN network problem yourself.

Read the plan documents before agreeing
The CIS and Key Facts Sheet answer different practical questions. Use the CIS to verify the price, contract length and early-exit fees. Review the Key Facts Sheet for busy-period speed, likely uses, factors that can affect speed and services that may be affected by a power failure. A headline offer or sales conversation should not substitute for checking these documents.
- Price and commitment: confirm the ongoing rate, promotional period, contract length and any fee for leaving early.
- Performance: check the advertised busy-period download speed and the factors the provider says may affect it.
- Setup and equipment: ask what you must pay for installation, a modem or other required equipment; confirm the amount directly with the provider.
- Service dependencies: check what will and will not work during a power failure, and whether a phone service or alarm is affected.
Make a note of the plan name and the date you checked its documents and quoted charges. Retail prices, promotional periods and provider speed claims can change, so an old advertisement or an earlier conversation is not a reliable substitute for the terms currently offered to you.

Before buying a modem or router, ask the provider which equipment is compatible with the service and whether any device is required. Then check whether your existing equipment meets those requirements. The ACCC warns that older routers can constrain higher-speed services, including routers that cannot support download speeds above 100 Mbps. That is a reason to check your router against the proposed service—not a reason to replace every router when switching plans.

Confirm the cost of any equipment you actually need and whether that cost is one-off or recurring. If the provider says your router is incompatible or likely to limit the connection, ask which capability is missing and what minimum specification the service requires. Avoid spending money based only on a general claim that a new plan needs new equipment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Protect phone, alarm and outage-dependent services
If you use a home-phone number, ask whether it can be kept when you change plans and how the proposed service handles that number. If the home phone is important, get the answer before committing rather than assuming that a broadband switch leaves it unchanged.
Check separately with the provider of any medical or security alarm about whether it is compatible with the proposed connection. The plan’s Key Facts Sheet can help identify services affected by a power failure, but the alarm provider is the appropriate source for confirming that a particular alarm will work. If a service must keep operating during an outage, identify what backup or alternative arrangement is needed before switching.
Use ACCC performance results as context, not a personal forecast
The ACCC performance dashboard reports results by provider and connection type. Its performance measures include speed, upload, latency, packet loss and outages. These measures can help you look beyond download speed when comparing providers, but market or provider-level results do not establish what an individual connection at your address will achieve.
The ACCC’s latest report summary, released on 17 June 2026, said fixed-line NBN customers averaged 99.4% of their plan download speed during peak evening hours. That is a market-wide reported average, not a guarantee for a specific service. The Measuring Broadband Australia program concluded in June 2026, so published results remain historical context; they should not be described as measurements from an ongoing program.
A practical switching checklist
- Collect the current terms. Note your present plan’s ongoing price, any promotion or commitment, exit fee and advertised busy-period speed.
- Get the proposed plan’s current terms. Request its price, promotional end date, standard rate, contract details, exit fees and any setup or equipment charges.
- Check the two plan documents. Read the CIS for price and contract terms, and the Key Facts Sheet for speed, speed-affecting factors, likely uses and power-failure impacts.
- Ask about your address. Confirm connection technology and known technical limits, then ask what the provider will do if the line cannot deliver the plan speed.
- Match performance to your household. Compare typical evening download speed and relevant upload needs with the number of people and activities likely to overlap.
- Verify devices and services. Check router compatibility and cost, home-phone number retention, alarm compatibility and outage dependencies where they apply to you.
- Calculate the same-period cost. Add recurring charges and applicable one-off costs for both options over an equal period; do not treat a temporary discount as the ongoing rate.
- Decide only after unresolved conditions are clear. If a promised speed, equipment requirement, phone number or alarm dependency matters to you, get a specific answer from the responsible provider before accepting the plan.
Common comparison mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by monthly price alone. This omits promotional expiry, setup and equipment charges, and possible early-exit fees.
- Treating a maximum speed as the normal evening result. Compare the advertised typical busy-period speed and remember that it is not an individual guarantee.
- Assuming a plan tier fixes an address limitation. Copper wiring, fixed wireless and other local constraints can affect what a connection can deliver.
- Buying replacement equipment by default. Check the hardware you own and the provider’s compatibility requirements first.
- Applying old market prices to a current offer. ACCC figures for 2024–25 are historical aggregate comparisons, not current retail quotes.
- Assuming connected services continue unchanged. Verify phone, alarm and power-failure implications with the provider responsible for each service.
A sound switch decision rests on current plan documents and answers about your address and household—not a generic claim that the cheapest price or highest speed is automatically the best value.
