What to Check Before Switching Phone Brands or Carriers

Use this checklist to compare coverage and costs, verify your exact phone, transfer your number, and prepare your data before switching.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Before switching, verify coverage where you actually use your phone, calculate the full cost of leaving and joining, and confirm that your exact handset can use the new carrier’s network. Then arrange any number transfer, prepare for carrier-specific setup changes, and back up data before moving to a different phone brand. You may not need a new phone at all.

1. Will the new carrier work where you need it?

Start with the places and routes that matter to you: home, work, school, regular commutes, and destinations you visit often. Check each candidate provider’s current coverage information for those locations, rather than relying on a broad national coverage claim. Coverage can vary within a city or even between nearby buildings, and a map cannot guarantee the signal you will experience indoors or on your specific routes.

Also consider what you use the connection for. If you depend on mobile data, calls, texts, or a particular feature while travelling, check whether the plan and network meet those needs in the places you use them. Coverage information and plan availability are location-specific, so verify them with the provider before committing.

2. What will switching actually cost?

Compare the total cost of leaving your current service and starting the new one—not just the advertised monthly price. Your current account may have a remaining device balance or an early termination charge, depending on its terms. Verizon advises customers to check those amounts with their current carrier before transferring service (Verizon’s number-transfer guidance).

  • Ask your current provider for any device balance and contract exit charge that would apply to your account.
  • Review the destination plan’s recurring charge and any taxes or fees shown during checkout.
  • Read promotion conditions, including how long a discount lasts and what you must do to qualify.

The amount due depends on your account and contract. Do not assume that switching will save money until you have compared the charges and terms that apply to you.

3. Does the plan fit how you use your phone?

Check the plan’s limits and conditions against your normal use. Look for details that matter to you, such as data allowances or restrictions, calling and texting terms, roaming, hotspot use, and any eligibility conditions attached to a promotion. Providers and countries differ, so rely on the destination carrier’s current plan terms rather than assuming that similarly named plans work the same way.

4. Will your current phone work with the new carrier?

Check the exact phone model—not only its brand or the fact that it is unlocked. Confirm that the destination carrier accepts that model, that the phone is unlocked for use with another provider, and that it supports the carrier’s physical SIM or eSIM activation method. Verify any network features you rely on as well.

A compatibility check is useful, but it does not promise that every feature or performance detail will match a carrier’s own devices. T-Mobile cautions that it cannot test all performance and feature behavior on non-T-Mobile devices (T-Mobile’s bring-your-own-device guidance). Ask the destination carrier about any must-have feature before switching.

If the handset is not compatible or cannot be unlocked, ask the carrier what options are available before buying anything. If a replacement is genuinely needed, an unlocked smartphone that the destination carrier confirms is compatible is one option; keeping your current phone is preferable when it meets your needs and passes the checks.

5. Can you keep your number?

Number-transfer rules depend on your country and providers. Contact the receiving carrier and follow its current instructions before cancelling service or starting a transfer. Do not assume that a process, code, or timeline used in one country applies elsewhere.

If you are switching in the UK

Ofcom’s UK Text to Switch process uses a PAC when you want to keep your number, or a STAC when you want to switch provider without keeping it. Request the relevant code and give it to your new provider as directed by Ofcom (Ofcom’s Text to Switch guidance). Ofcom also says that in most cases a number can still be transferred within one month of cancellation (Ofcom’s mobile switching guidance); check its current instructions for your circumstances.

6. What changes when you move the phone or change brands?

Changing carriers may involve more than moving a SIM. Depending on the phone and provider, you may need to activate a physical SIM or eSIM, update settings, or follow the carrier’s activation steps. Apple describes several ways to activate an eSIM on iPhone, with the available method depending on the carrier and situation (Apple’s eSIM activation instructions).

Samsung notes that carrier branding, network configuration, features, and system apps on a Galaxy can change when the phone changes carriers (Samsung’s carrier-change guidance). Before moving to another phone brand, use the manufacturers’ current instructions to transfer your contacts, photos, messages, and other important data. A SIM change alone does not move your personal data or guarantee that every carrier feature will remain available.

7. How to prepare and check service after activation

Before the switch

  • Write down the locations where reliable coverage matters and check each provider there.
  • Get the actual costs and conditions for leaving your current plan and joining the new one.
  • Confirm the exact handset’s unlock status, compatibility, and SIM or eSIM activation options with the new carrier.
  • If keeping your number, follow the receiving carrier’s and local regulator’s transfer instructions.
  • If changing phones or brands, back up important data and follow the relevant manufacturer’s transfer steps.

After activation

Test the services you depend on: make and receive a call, send and receive a text, use mobile data, and check voicemail. Also test any phone or carrier feature that matters to you. If something does not work, contact the new carrier with the exact phone model and describe the issue; the fix may depend on the device, network, or activation method.
