An Android tablet can replace a laptop only if it handles the work you actually do. Before switching, check your essential apps, files, keyboard and pointer, display setup, and peripherals on the exact tablet and Android version you plan to use. Support varies by device, so a feature available on one tablet is not proof it will work the same way on another.
1. Confirm your essential apps and tasks work
Start with a list of the work you cannot do without. Include everyday tasks as well as occasional ones: browser-based work, office documents, video calls, school or business portals, creative tools, specialized software, VPN or security tools, and any desktop browser extensions you rely on.

For each app or service, check that it is available on the tablet and supports the functions you need—not merely that it can be installed. Use your own account and files to test sign-in, editing, export, offline use, and external-keyboard shortcuts. If work or school manages your devices, confirm that its required management and security tools support the tablet.
Desktop and mobile versions of an app may not have the same features. The official Android guidance cited here does not establish compatibility for individual apps, so treat this as a test for your specific apps and tablet rather than assuming parity.

2. Check multitasking and external-display behavior
Google describes desktop windowing on supported large-screen Android devices: multiple apps can open in separate windows that can be resized and arranged. A connected keyboard and trackpad can also trigger the mode on supported devices. Google cautions that desktop windowing is not available on every device and that the experience can vary. Google’s Android guidance on desktop windowing and connected displays recommends checking with the device manufacturer for details.
If you expect to work at a monitor, verify what the exact tablet does when connected. Depending on device support and settings, it may mirror the tablet screen or start a separate desktop session on the display.

3. Test typing and pointer input

Try the keyboard you intend to use, or one with the same layout and connection type. Check the keys and shortcuts you use most, as well as pointer speed, scrolling, gestures, and touchpad behavior. For long typing sessions or frequent pointer use, a keyboard with a trackpad may make the tablet setup more practical; verify its compatibility with the specific model.
4. Make sure your file workflow holds up
Map how your work files move today: downloads, email attachments, shared folders, cloud storage, offline copies, and any external storage. Then try those same steps on the tablet, including opening, editing, saving, and sending the file types you use.

Google documents transferring files between Android and Windows or Chromebook computers through a Google Account or USB cable. For USB transfer, the tablet must be unlocked and set to File Transfer. 5. Verify peripherals, ports, and connectivity
List the equipment you need to use and test it with the exact tablet where possible. This may include a printer, external drive, dock, card reader, headset, webcam, monitor, or other work hardware. Compatibility is not universal, and the Android guidance above does not verify support for every tablet-peripheral combination.
- Check the manufacturer’s specifications for the tablet’s ports and supported connections.
- Confirm whether each accessory needs a cable, adapter, wireless connection, or separate app.
- Test the actual device and the task you need it for, such as printing a document or reading files from an external drive.
Also compare the candidate tablet’s battery life, performance, storage, mobile connectivity, warranty, and software-update support against your own workload. Those factors depend on the model; there is no single value that applies to Android tablets as a group.
6. Compare the exact tablet candidates
If you are choosing between models, compare them against the same workday rather than relying on a general “laptop replacement” label. Record what you have verified and what still depends on a trial.

7. Trial the setup before retiring your laptop
Use the intended tablet, keyboard, display, and accessories for a representative workday before selling or putting away the laptop. Complete the tasks that matter to you: edit and export a document, join a call, handle files, switch among apps, connect required peripherals, and work away from power if that is part of your routine. Note where you need a workaround or return to the laptop. That trial is the clearest way to decide whether the tablet fits your workflow.
