Before trying to preorder a Steam Frame, check Valve’s product page for the current signup and ordering status. The first registration window has passed; Valve says later registrants join the end of the waitlist, and an invitation to buy expires after 72 hours. Before signing up or accepting an invitation, confirm eligibility, choose a storage configuration, and check that the games and fit match your needs.
Check whether registration or ordering is open
Valve’s first registration window ran from September 14 to September 17, 2026, closing at 10 a.m. Pacific Time. That window has passed. Valve says registrations made after the one-time randomization are added to the end of the waitlist, so registering does not guarantee an immediate purchase opportunity or a delivery date. Check the Steam Frame product page for current signup status and any later ordering changes. Valve’s FAQ says invited buyers have 72 hours to complete checkout before the invitation expires and the spot may pass to someone else.
If you are waiting, monitor the Steam account and email associated with registration so you do not miss an invitation deadline.
Confirm that you meet Valve’s eligibility rules
Valve’s Limited Drop Terms specify that registrants must be at least 18 and legally resident in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, an EU member state, or Australia. The Steam account must be unlimited and in good standing, and it must have made a Steam purchase before April 27, 2026. Review the current Limited Drop Terms and product FAQ before registering, in case the applicable terms have changed.

Valve says registration is limited to one per household. It may use payment methods, shipping addresses, and other information to identify and remove duplicate entries.
Choose a storage kit with standalone use in mind
Valve lists two built-in storage options: 256GB UFS and 1TB UFS. Road to VR reported US launch prices of $1,059 and $1,299, respectively, on September 14, 2026. Those are reported launch prices, not a live quote; check the current product page for the price and availability at checkout. The $240 reported difference may be worth weighing against how much content you expect to keep installed for standalone use.

Both configurations list a microSD slot, but Valve’s published specifications do not state a supported card format or maximum capacity. Check compatibility before buying a card rather than assuming a particular card will work.

Check whether your games run standalone or stream from a PC
Valve describes Steam Frame as capable of streaming games from a Steam library, while standalone play applies to a growing number of VR and non-VR games. These are distinct use cases: owning or streaming a game through a PC does not establish that it can run directly on the headset.
Before choosing a storage kit, look up the specific titles you intend to play in Valve’s Steam Frame Standalone Verified list. Valve says titles carrying the Steam Frame Compatible mark have been tested to work with the headset; check the current listing for the rating and mode relevant to your game.

Compare display specifications with your fit needs
Valve lists a 2160 × 2160 LCD resolution per eye, a 72–144Hz refresh rate, and a target interpupillary distance (IPD) range of 60–70mm. Valve identifies 144Hz as experimental. Specifications can help you assess whether the display range is relevant to you, but they cannot establish individual comfort or replace trying a headset fit.
Read Valve’s current specifications alongside your own fit requirements; do not treat the target IPD range as a guarantee of comfort for every wearer.

Decide whether any accessories are relevant
Valve identifies Zenni prescription inserts and an Arcturus Vision camera as compatible accessories. The camera is an optional feature upgrade, not a requirement for ordinary headset use. Valve also lists the microSD slot for expanded storage, but does not publish its card capacity limit in the cited specifications.
Check accessory availability and pricing at the time you order. If considering a microSD card, verify its format and capacity support first; the published slot specification alone does not establish compatibility.
Review the order terms before checkout
The available Steam Frame-specific sources establish the registration and invitation process, but do not establish a Steam Frame-specific refund or warranty rule. Before paying, read the terms displayed for the actual order, including the applicable refund and warranty information, rather than assuming rules published for another Valve device apply.
