Before moving Visio diagrams, check more than whether the destination can open a .vsdx file. Inventory what each diagram contains, import copies of representative files into the candidate tool, and compare both appearance and behavior against the originals. Successful import is not proof that every page, link, data feature, image, or interactive element survived.
What can change when a Visio diagram moves?
A diagram may contain more than shapes and text. Before evaluating a destination, note which capabilities your team actually relies on. Microsoft’s Visio feature comparison identifies capabilities such as shape data, hyperlinks, connected data, and SVG export. Microsoft also lists data-connected diagrams and advanced features among the Visio for the web editing limitations. These are useful prompts for an inventory; they do not establish that a particular third-party tool will preserve or lose those features.

- Structure: page count, specialized shapes, connector routing, and any grouping or layout your team needs to edit.
- Content: labels, fonts, fills, visual effects, and embedded images.
- Information and behavior: hyperlinks, shape data, connected data, and interactive features used in the workflow.
Record only the features that matter for each file. A diagram used as a static reference has different migration requirements from one whose links, data, or editable structure are part of a process.
Keep the VSDX source and choose the right output
Keep untouched copies of the Visio files before trying an import or conversion. Record each file’s extension and, when known, the Visio version or plan used to open or edit it.
#1 Best Overall
VSDX is a structured package based on Open Packaging Conventions and XML. Microsoft’s VSDX file-format introduction describes document parts and relationships among shapes, pages, images, and other resources. That structure makes file-level interoperability possible; it does not guarantee that another application will reproduce Visio-specific rendering or behavior.
Choose an output based on what you need it to do:
- For a fixed visual reference or sharing copy: Visio can save diagrams as PDF and as graphic files including PNG, JPEG, EMF, and SVG. Microsoft’s instructions for saving a Visio diagram as a graphic or image file cover those image formats. PDF follows the page layout, while an image can provide a visual reference for comparison.
- For continued editing: use the destination’s native import route on a copy of the VSDX. A rendered PDF or image is not the same as an editable, structured VSDX package.
Use Visio compatibility warnings for the right purpose
Microsoft’s Compatibility Checker identifies features that may not save or may look different when a file is saved in an earlier Visio format. This can help you prepare a backward-compatible Visio copy, but it does not certify how a third-party application will import the file. See Microsoft’s guidance on compatibility between different Visio versions.

Run a representative pilot before converting a library
Select a small pilot set that includes ordinary diagrams as well as files containing less common features your organization depends on. This is a cautious sampling method, not a guarantee that the pilot predicts every file’s result. Keep the untouched originals and, if useful, create a PDF or image reference from each source.

- Import a copy: use the candidate tool’s documented import path and note whether the result consists of editable native objects or a largely flattened visual representation.
- Compare page by page: inspect the imported file alongside the Visio source or reference export. Check text, shapes, connectors, fonts, fills, effects, image placement, and multi-page handling.
- Test behavior separately: follow important hyperlinks, inspect needed shape or source data, and try editing the structures your workflow depends on. Visual similarity alone does not establish that data or interactions still work.
- Record exceptions and repair effort: note what changed, whether it can be repaired, and how much work the repair takes.
- Decide file by file: migrate diagrams that meet your requirements; rebuild those whose important content or behavior does not transfer; retain an archival Visio copy or static reference export when that is the more practical choice.
What to compare between candidate tools
When assessing two or more destinations, compare them against the same pilot files and workflow requirements. The documentation cited here supports evaluating these factors, but does not establish a current multi-vendor ranking or comparison matrix.

- Supported source extensions and whether import creates editable native objects.
- Preservation of page count, shape and connector layout, text, fonts, fills, and effects.
- Handling of embedded images, including EMF images where relevant.
- Retention of hyperlinks, metadata, shape data, and connected data.
- Support for interactive behavior and the storage and collaboration workflow your team uses.
- Time and effort required to find and repair exceptions.
Example: diagrams.net (draw.io) documents VSDX import caveats
diagrams.net (draw.io) lists .vsdx among its importable formats in its instructions for importing a diagram into an existing diagram. Its page on diagram differences after .vsdx import says that differences between the VSDX and draw.io formats, along with rendering differences between Windows and browser engines, can lead to visual or interactive differences. It also states that embedded EMF images in VSDX diagrams will not be imported.
Those are draw.io-specific documented caveats, not a prediction about every destination. They illustrate why a tool’s ability to import a file should be followed by a check of the details that matter in your own workflow.

When to repeat the pilot
Repeat the pilot when the destination tool, import route, or mix of source files changes. Migration outcomes depend on the combination of source content and destination behavior, and vendor documentation and capabilities can change over time.
