Before claiming or swapping a newly launched token, verify the route through an independently confirmed official source, match the token’s exact network and contract address, and understand every wallet approval or signature. If a claim asks for your recovery phrase or a prompt’s purpose is unclear, stop. These checks reduce avoidable risk; they cannot prove that a token or campaign is safe.
Start with the route, not the token message
A token appearing in your wallet does not authenticate its issuer. An unsolicited token memo, transaction history entry, social reply, email, or advertisement may include a link to a fake redemption or swap page. The FBI has warned about airdrop memos with third-party URLs, and MetaMask describes fake claim routes that seek approvals or recovery phrases.

Find the project website or app independently, using a source you can verify rather than a link attached to the token or an unexpected message. Check that the campaign is actually announced by the project or provider. A verified social account is not enough on its own: Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency has noted that scammers have used compromised verified X accounts. If the offer is unexpected, contact the provider using details you locate separately.

Singapore Police advise using platforms through their official websites or applications and checking sites against official sources. A familiar-looking name or page is not verification; check the address carefully before connecting a wallet.

Match the network and contract address
Token names and symbols are not unique identifiers. Before interacting, confirm the blockchain network and exact contract address against the project’s official information, then check that address on an appropriate block explorer. Search by address rather than relying on a name or ticker. Coinbase recommends contract-address verification, and MetaMask also cautions against trusting token names alone.
- Network: Confirm the chain named by the project and the chain selected in your wallet.
- Contract: Compare the full address, not just its first or last few characters.
- Route: Make sure the claim or swap page is linked from independently verified project materials.
Campaign eligibility, supported wallets, contract addresses, and trading conditions can change. Recheck the project’s current official information immediately before you act.
Understand what the wallet is asking you to sign
Read the wallet prompt instead of treating it as a routine confirmation. Check which account, contract, token, spender, amount or allowance, and action are involved. Reject the request if you cannot explain why it is needed or what authority it grants; verify the requirement through official documentation first.

Approvals and permits
An approval can authorize a contract to move tokens later, sometimes up to a specified allowance. A permit signature can also pre-authorize a future transaction. That means a prompt showing no immediate transfer is not necessarily harmless. Singapore’s Cyber Security Agency explains the risks of malicious approve and permit allowances; Singapore Police warn that even a hardware wallet does not make an unsafe permit signature safe.

Where an approval is genuinely required, understand its scope and avoid a high or unlimited allowance when a smaller one will do. If the wallet does not make the authorization clear, stop rather than signing on the assumption that the prompt is safe.
Never disclose wallet secrets to claim
Do not enter or share your recovery phrase, private key, account password, or one-time code in response to an airdrop link or unsolicited request. Coinbase says a legitimate airdrop campaign will not ask for a 12-word recovery phrase; the FBI warns that fraudulent sites solicit seed phrases and credentials. Close the page if it asks for any of these.
Assess the token without treating checks as proof
Look for coherent project documentation, identifiable team information, and an audit relevant to the contract you are considering. Review explorer warnings or flags, liquidity, and whether trading information appears credible. These are clues, not guarantees: an audit may not cover the exact contract or every risk, and a token can look profitable while being difficult or impossible to sell. Coinbase describes this honeypot pattern and cautions that passing screening checks does not establish legitimacy.

Coinbase suggests a small test transaction as one possible sellability check, but a test is not a safety guarantee and interacting can still expose your wallet to risk. Consider it only after verifying the route, address, network, and requested permissions; do not use it as a substitute for those checks.

Compare plausible claim or swap routes
If more than one route appears legitimate, compare the concrete details rather than choosing the one with the loudest promotion. This is a screening aid, not a score that can prove safety.
| What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Official connection | Is the route linked from independently verified project materials? |
| Network and token | Does the chain and full contract address match the project’s official information? |
| Wallet permissions | Are the requested actions and allowances limited, understandable, and necessary? |
| Project evidence | Are documentation, team information, and any relevant audit clear enough to assess? |
| Trading conditions | Is liquidity credible, and does market activity appear functional rather than merely displayed? |
| Wallet support | Does the project’s documented process support your wallet and network? |
If the token is unsolicited or you already interacted
An unexpected token appeared
Do not follow an embedded URL or try to redeem an unexplained token. Coinbase says unexpected dust can be left alone; interacting with it may be useful to an attacker. If your wallet offers a hide or report option, you can use it without following the token’s link.
You signed an approval you do not trust
Use a trusted wallet interface or a well-known relevant explorer tool to review active approvals, then revoke suspicious permissions. Verify the revocation tool’s address independently before connecting your wallet. Ethereum.org lists approval-review resources and recommends revoking malicious approvals. Revoking an approval is a separate transaction, so inspect its prompt carefully too.

Do not pay anyone who promises to recover stolen cryptocurrency for a fee. Ethereum.org warns that recovery offers are often a second scam; confirmed blockchain transactions cannot be reversed.
When to stop
- The offer arrived unexpectedly, and you cannot confirm it through an independent official source.
- The page asks for a recovery phrase, private key, password, or one-time code.
- The network or full contract address does not match official project information.
- You cannot tell what an approval or signature authorizes, or why it is required.
- The project’s documentation, audit claims, liquidity, or trading information cannot be checked clearly.
When a material detail cannot be verified, pausing is safer than signing first and trying to undo it later. Ethereum.org notes that confirmed blockchain transactions are final.
