Before buying satellite internet equipment, choose a provider and check service availability at your exact address. The dish and terminal are provider-specific, and equipment may be supplied, leased, or installed as part of a service order. Confirm the kit, installation scope, site requirements, and plan terms with the provider before purchasing hardware.
1. Confirm service availability and equipment rules for your address
Start with the address, not a dish listing. Satellite terminals are not universal: a dish or modem intended for one provider or kit generation should not be assumed to work with another. Ask the provider to confirm that it can serve the property and identify the exact terminal, modem or gateway, and accessories required for the selected service.

Ownership terms differ. Viasat says customers must lease the necessary user-terminal equipment from Viasat, and that the installer brings the equipment needed to install and use the service. Its new installations include a Wi-Fi modem with a router. Starlink describes a kit containing a user terminal, Wi-Fi router, power supply, and mount. Check the current order terms for your location rather than relying on a generic equipment list. Viasat installation process; Starlink specifications

A usable installation site matters more than an upgraded indoor router. Hughesnet and Viasat describe the need for a clear view of the southern sky for their installations. Starlink identifies the installation environment, dish angle, and field of view among factors that can affect performance. The correct direction and requirements depend on the provider and actual location, so ask the provider or installer to assess the site before ordering equipment.

- Look for potential obstructions such as trees, buildings, or roof features near the proposed dish location.
- Check whether the property owner, landlord, or homeowners association has rules about exterior equipment or mounting.
- Ask how the provider will determine the final dish position and what happens if the preferred location is blocked.
Starlink also lists weather, cable quality and placement, and electrical power reliability as factors that may affect performance. A better Wi-Fi router cannot resolve a blocked dish view or a service-side limitation. Hughesnet standard residential installation; Viasat installation process; Starlink specifications
3. Get the standard installation scope and extra-work costs in writing
Installation can cover more than fastening a dish to a roof. Depending on provider and location, the standard job may include a site assessment, dish mounting, cable routing into the home, modem or router setup, activation, and testing. Ask for the included work and any charges for nonstandard mounting, longer or unusual cable routes, trenching, or additional equipment before the appointment.
Hughesnet says its standard residential installation includes an outdoor dish, a cable run indoors to the modem, setup of the Wi-Fi modem and power supply, and connection of two devices. It says nonstandard work or equipment costs are itemized and require customer authorization. Starlink describes professional installation as including site assessment, dish-location selection, mounting, cable routing, router connection and power-up, activation, performance testing, and an app walkthrough; availability varies by country. Viasat describes technician placement and installation of the dish, connection and configuration, testing, and activation. Request an address-specific quote that separates recurring service charges from one-time installation or equipment charges. The available provider information does not establish one current total price across services, and extra work can depend on the property. Review and authorize itemized additions before work begins.
4. Decide whether the included Wi-Fi gateway covers your home
A separate router is optional, not an automatic satellite-internet requirement. Viasat says customers may use a standalone router and advises considering Wi-Fi 6 or newer, frequency bands, coverage footprint, connected-device count, and whether the home has one level or several. If the provider-supplied gateway already reaches the rooms and supports the devices you use, another router may add cost and setup without solving a real problem.
For a larger or multi-level home with weak indoor coverage, a compatible mesh system or extender may help distribute Wi-Fi. Before buying, confirm how an additional router or mesh system should connect to the provider modem or gateway and whether any gateway setting or configuration is required. These devices improve the local wireless network; they do not increase the satellite service’s plan allowance, remove dish obstructions, or guarantee higher internet speeds. 5. Match any mount, cable kit, or backup accessory to the exact equipment
Do not buy installation accessories until you know the terminal model and installation plan. DISH’s Starlink guidance identifies a mount for the specific Starlink model and a cable-routing kit as possible additions for a permanent installation. It also lists a UPS as a possible tool or accessory, not a universal requirement. Confirm compatibility with the exact kit and current installation instructions before purchasing. These accessories should not be assumed to fit Hughesnet, Viasat, or a different Starlink kit generation. DISH Starlink installation guidance

Starlink’s specifications page, accessed in 2026, says users typically experience download speeds between 25 and 220 Mbps and upload speeds between 5 and 20 Mbps, with a majority of users experiencing downloads above 100 Mbps. These are provider-published figures, not independent test results. The same page says speeds and uninterrupted service are not guaranteed and that actual speeds may be lower during high usage. Hughesnet likewise cautions that plan speeds and uninterrupted use are not guaranteed and may vary. Compare the plan terms for your address and expected usage; equipment alone cannot override the service plan or network conditions. Starlink specifications; Hughesnet buyer’s guide
