Check the physical connector system before anything else. A modular wall light may let you build patterns, but “expandable” can mean only adding pieces from one product family or grouping separate fixtures in an app—not joining unlike products. Then confirm smart-home and Wi-Fi requirements, usable brightness, power-supply limits, mounting method, wall surface, and indoor/outdoor rating. Nanoleaf Lines illustrates why these checks matter: its 60° and 90° connectors support different layouts, its connectors are family-specific, setup requires Bluetooth, 5 GHz Wi-Fi is unsupported, and the manufacturer rates each Line at 20 lumens.
Use this buying order
- Draw the pattern. Mark the wall, cable route, power-supply position and every turn. Confirm the connector angle and the layouts supported by the exact kit.
- Match the product family. Record the model, generation, connector type, controller and power supply. Check every expansion bar or replacement connector against those details.
- Verify your smart-home setup. Confirm the exact regional model’s ecosystems, app, Bluetooth requirement, Wi-Fi band, hub needs and firmware process.
- Calculate whether the light is bright enough. Compare the stated lumens and color features with the room’s actual task; decorative bars may not replace a ceiling or desk light.
- Check electrical and physical limits. Stay within the controller and power-supply capacity, then verify adhesive, screw mounting, wall finish, cable access and environmental rating.
This sequence prevents the most expensive mistakes: buying pieces that cannot connect, discovering that setup cannot join your network, or installing a decorative effect light where you needed useful task illumination.

Plan the physical layout before choosing a kit
Define what “modular” must do
Sketch the wall at full scale or use masking tape to mark each bar. Decide whether you want a straight run, a chevron, a branching pattern or a closed geometric shape. Leave room for the controller, power lead and any bend in the cable. A kit that looks flexible in a product photograph may support only certain angles or a specific order of connections.

Separate three meanings of modularity:
- Physical expansion: additional modules use the same connector and controller system.
- Physical interoperability: modules from different product families join directly.
- Software grouping: separate fixtures are controlled together in one scene or room.
These are not interchangeable. A manufacturer can support app grouping while prohibiting a physical connection between families.

Connector angle determines the geometry
Nanoleaf Lines is documented with both 60° and 90° connector variants. Those angles create different patterns, so select the connector type that matches your drawing rather than choosing a bundle solely by its number of bars. Check whether a starter kit includes the angle you need or whether the other angle is a separate accessory.
Measure each bar’s length and the distance between the wall’s obstacles—corners, trim, shelves, doors and vents. Also identify where the first connector must sit so the power cable can reach an outlet without crossing the design. A visually correct layout can still fail if the controller or supply cannot be placed safely.
Do not assume similar-looking products connect
Nanoleaf’s compatibility guidance says Lines use specific connectors and do not physically connect to other product lines. Its support FAQ, updated May 23, 2025, states: “Lines uses specific connectors, so they are not compatible with other products.” That statement concerns physical interconnection; it does not rule out controlling separate products together in an app when the software supports it.

Verify smart-home and network requirements
Match the ecosystem you already use
The Nanoleaf Lines product page lists Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings and Homey integrations. These are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not a guarantee that every feature behaves identically in every household. Check the current page and manual for your exact regional model before purchase, because support can differ by edition or market.
Decide which controls you actually need:
- Phone-app control and room grouping
- Voice commands through your existing assistant
- Schedules, scenes and automations
- Music synchronization
- Screen-mirroring effects
A product can advertise ecosystem compatibility while still requiring its own app for initial setup, firmware updates or advanced scenes.

Confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi details
The Lines product page says Bluetooth is required for setup and that 5 GHz networks are not supported. If your router uses a combined network name for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, check whether setup can temporarily use or expose a 2.4 GHz network. Keep your phone near the controller during pairing and allow the app’s Bluetooth and local-network permissions.

Judge brightness and color for the actual room
Interpret the published output correctly
Nanoleaf lists 20 lumens per Line, RGBW color, a 1200–6500 K color-temperature range and two color zones per Line. These specifications describe an effect-oriented modular light bar. They do not establish how evenly a room will be illuminated, how colors render on walls or how the light compares with an independent laboratory measurement.
For orientation, the published maximum of 18 Lines would equal 360 lumens if you simply multiply 18 by 20. That is a rated sum, not a measured room result; wall color, spacing, diffusion and viewing angle affect perceived brightness. Treat the bars as ambient or decorative lighting unless the stated output clearly meets the task you have in mind.
Keep task lighting separate when necessary
Reading, cooking, grooming and desk work generally need a light source positioned for the task, without glare or shadows. Plan a suitable ceiling, under-cabinet or desk fixture if the wall bars do not provide enough illumination. Do not infer suitability from the number of modules, the maximum color temperature or a marketing photograph.
Consider color controls and zones
RGBW indicates colored and white-light channels; the listed 1200–6500 K range describes adjustable white color temperature. Two color zones per Line can produce segmented effects, but the number of zones is not the same as the number of independently wired fixtures. Check the app documentation to see how scenes address those zones and whether all effects are available in your chosen ecosystem.

The supplied specifications do not include an independent color-accuracy score, beam pattern, measured lux values or a laboratory brightness test. If those factors matter, look for measurements for the exact model rather than assuming a specification that is not published.
Check power, controller and expansion limits
Use the complete power specification
The current Nanoleaf product information lists a 42 W maximum power-supply output, maximum energy consumption of 2 W per Line and a limit of 18 Lines per 42 W supply. Keep the planned design within that controller-and-supply arrangement. Do not add a bar merely because a connector fits; an apparently compatible piece can exceed the controller’s supported count or the supply’s rating.
| Published specification | Value | How to use it when buying |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness | 20 lumens per Line | Estimate the rated total, then decide whether separate task lighting is needed. |
| Maximum energy consumption | 2 W per Line | Use it as a per-module limit when planning the electrical load. |
| Power supply | 42 W maximum output | Do not exceed the supply and controller arrangement specified for the kit. |
| Maximum expansion | 18 Lines per 42 W supply | Check the complete layout against this stated limit before buying add-ons. |
| Stated LED lifetime | 25,000 hours | This is a published specification, not an independently verified service-life test. |
When combining starter and expansion kits, identify which supply and controller will run the final installation. Keep unused supplies and connectors labelled; they are easy to confuse when several generations are stored together. Recheck the current manual if you change the number of modules or buy used parts.

Inspect the mounting method and room conditions
Adhesive mounting
The product page lists included double-sided tape. Adhesive is convenient and avoids drilling, but success depends on a clean, dry, smooth surface and on the wall finish tolerating removal. Test a small, inconspicuous area if paint, wallpaper or a delicate coating could lift. Plan the final pattern before pressing the tape down; repositioning can reduce its grip.
Screw mounting
Optional screw mounting is available, but screws and wall anchors are not included. Choose fasteners for the wall material—such as drywall, masonry or wood—and verify that the mounting points can carry the fixture without crushing the housing. If you rent, confirm whether drilling is allowed.
Indoor and moisture limits
Nanoleaf recommends indoor use and lists an IP20 rating. IP20 is not an outdoor or wet-area rating. Do not install these bars where they can be splashed, exposed to rain, placed in a shower area or subjected to condensation. Keep the power supply and controller in the same dry environment.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Plan cable routing and service access
Leave access to the controller, power connection and reset or pairing controls. Avoid pinching the cable behind a sharp wall edge. If the pattern crosses a corner, confirm that the supplied cable length and connector orientation can make the turn without tension.
Separate decorative modular lights from wired controls
Some buyers compare wall bars with a hardwired smart switch or dimmer. They are different product categories, and a wall-switch module is not an accessory for Nanoleaf Lines.
For any wired control, check the exact electrical requirements before purchase:
- Switch type and whether a neutral wire is present
- Available depth and space inside the electrical box
- Supported LED load and minimum load
- Dimming compatibility with the specific light
- Required hub, app and regional certification
Philips Hue’s installation guidance, for its own wall-switch products, advises checking switch type, neutral-wire availability and box space. It also says electrical devices should be installed by electrically skilled people and that local regulations may require a professional. Those instructions do not make the module suitable for Lines.
Likewise, Leviton’s D2MSD-1BW page lists LED-compatibility tuning and UL, FCC, CSA and other certifications for that particular model. Those details cannot be generalized to another dimmer, another region or a decorative light bar. Follow the product-specific instructions and local electrical rules.

Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by appearance instead of connector
Two products can share a brand style while using different linkers and control systems. Verify the connector and family in the manual, not just the product photograph.

Confusing app scenes with physical links
Grouping separate devices in an app does not mean electricity or data can pass between their modules. Confirm both software support and physical compatibility.
Planning a pattern that exceeds the supply
Count every Line in the finished design and compare it with the stated maximum for the exact supply. If the count changes, recalculate before installation rather than adding pieces incrementally.
Assuming “smart” means any Wi-Fi network works
Lines requires Bluetooth for setup and does not support 5 GHz networks according to the product page. Prepare the supported band and permissions before pairing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUsing wall bars as the only room light
At 20 lumens per Line, the published output is modest for general illumination. Decide where functional light comes from before committing to an effect-only installation.
Mounting on an unsuitable surface
Included tape and optional screws solve different problems. Check paint, wallpaper, masonry, anchors, rental restrictions and the consequences of removal before selecting a method.
Installing in a damp location
An IP20, indoor-recommended product should not be treated as weatherproof. Choose a fixture specifically rated for the location if moisture is possible.
Final checks at the store or checkout
- Write the exact product-family and generation name on your plan.
- Confirm whether the kit contains 60° or 90° connectors and whether that matches every turn in the pattern.
- List the number of Lines, then compare it with the 18-Line maximum per 42 W supply.
- Verify the 20-lumen-per-Line rating is suitable for an ambient role and arrange other task lighting if needed.
- Confirm Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings or Homey support for the exact model and region if relevant.
- Prepare Bluetooth and a supported Wi-Fi band for setup; remember that 5 GHz is unsupported for Lines.
- Choose tape or screws after checking the wall finish, fasteners and rental rules.
- Confirm indoor placement and the IP20 rating; exclude wet or outdoor locations.
- Save the manual, controller details and purchase records for future expansion or troubleshooting.
These checks turn “modular” from a marketing description into a defined plan: a layout that physically fits, a control system that your network can configure, light output matched to the job, and an installation that stays within its electrical and environmental limits.
