Then verify that the program supports your computer and intended disc, understand its copy-protection limits, and check what its license actually covers. “DVD support” alone does not mean a program can read every DVD.
Choose the output you actually need
DVD software can perform different jobs. A transcoder reads video and converts it into a new file; a disc-extraction tool can retain selected titles or tracks in a disc-derived file. The distinction matters because conversion can reduce file size but does not preserve the original video stream unchanged.

For smaller files: check whether video is re-encoded
HandBrake makes new MP4, MKV, or WebM files and always converts the video. It supports audio pass-through for certain audio types, but that does not make the video a pass-through copy. HandBrake is appropriate to consider when you want to transcode a source you can legally access, not when you need an unchanged video stream. MakeMKV describes its software as converting and streaming DVD and AVCHD content, with separate licensing terms for Blu-ray functionality. If you want to keep selected titles, audio tracks, or subtitles, check the program’s own documentation for how it lets you select them and what file it produces. Do not assume that a program described as a “ripper” will preserve video unchanged; confirm whether it re-encodes video or retains the source streams.

Check compatibility before paying
Confirm that the software runs on your operating system, accepts the kind of disc you have, and produces a format supported by your intended playback devices. HandBrake documents support for Linux, Mac, and Windows and lists MP4, MKV, and WebM as output formats. MakeMKV’s purchase page discusses DVD and AVCHD conversion or streaming as well as its distinct Blu-ray license scope.
Make sure your computer can read a physical DVD
A computer needs an optical drive to read a physical DVD. If yours has none, you may need a compatible external USB DVD drive. Check the drive’s connection and compatibility with your computer and operating system before purchasing; no particular drive model is established here.

Confirm device and format compatibility
- Check the software’s current operating-system requirements, not just a general claim that it supports your platform.
- Verify that it accepts your source-disc type and can handle the titles or tracks you want.
- Check that your target player or device supports the output container and any selected audio or subtitle tracks.
- Confirm that the computer can read the disc through an internal or compatible external optical drive.
Understand copy-protection limits
Support for DVDs does not establish support for protected DVDs. HandBrake says it does not defeat or circumvent copy protection and does not work with DRM, including many commercial DVDs. It should not be treated as a copy-protection remover. VLC’s Windows FAQ likewise notes that some newer DVD protection mechanisms are unsupported; that is not a promise that VLC handles all discs.

Before buying, look for a clear statement from the vendor about supported sources and limitations. Avoid claims that a tool works with every commercial disc unless the vendor substantiates them—and remember that technical capability does not determine whether copying or circumvention is lawful where you live.

Read the license by disc type and feature
“Free” or “paid” can describe only part of a product’s functionality. HandBrake is free and open source. MakeMKV says DVD and AVCHD functions are free, while Blu-ray functionality is shareware: its purchase page describes a 30-day trial and says a registration key is required afterward. The page currently says purchases are temporarily unavailable and supplies a beta key, so check MakeMKV’s purchase page directly for current terms and availability. Do not rely on an old price, key, or availability report.
Before committing, verify whether the license is a one-time purchase or recurring subscription, which disc types and features it covers, whether the trial has limits, and what happens when the trial ends. If a vendor does not state a term clearly, treat it as unconfirmed rather than assuming.

Check whether the workflow fits your selections
Ease of use is not just the number of buttons. If you need a particular title, audio language, subtitle, or track, confirm that the software can identify and select it before starting a long conversion. Also check whether its workflow is extraction, re-encoding, or both; the distinction affects the resulting file and how much control you have over size and quality.

- Need selected disc content in a disc-derived file? Prioritize title, track, subtitle, and audio selection, plus clarity about stream retention.
- Not sure what your disc contains? Check whether the software lets you preview or inspect titles before committing to an output workflow.
Know the U.S. legal context
For readers in the United States, the U.S. Copyright Office explains that Section 1201 prohibits circumvention of technological measures used to control access. In its Section 1201 2018: Frequently Asked Questions, the Office states: “For example, section 1201 makes it illegal for a person to decrypt a DVD containing a copyrighted motion picture or to bypass a password control to access a subscription video streaming service.” The FAQ describes exemptions as limited and temporary; owning a disc does not by itself establish that circumvention is lawful in every situation.
