Pay through a method with buyer recourse, save the listing, and inspect the phone as soon as it arrives.
Check the seller, listing, and actual sale terms
Research both the marketplace and the specific seller. Look for contact information, recent feedback across more than one source, and the seller’s written shipping, refund, and return terms. Ratings can be misleading, so do not rely on a score alone. Save a copy of the listing, seller identity, advertised condition, promised delivery date, and relevant messages before ordering.

Confirm the return deadline, who pays return shipping, whether there is a restocking fee, and whether sale or clearance items have different rules. Also identify which protections apply: those offered by the seller, marketplace, payment provider, or manufacturer are not necessarily interchangeable. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises that HTTPS encrypts a connection but does not establish that a site is legitimate: Buying From an Online Marketplace.

A very low price on an expensive phone is a reason to investigate, not proof of a bargain. For a used phone shown only in stock photos, ask for images of the actual device and written answers about its condition.

Confirm the exact iPhone and carrier compatibility
Check the precise model and storage, and make sure the listing clearly identifies the phone as new, used, refurbished, or open-box. Confirm that it works with your intended carrier and plan. If you need eSIM or a particular plan feature, ask the carrier directly about support for that specific device.
Do not rely on “unlocked” in the listing title
Ask for written confirmation of the lock status and what remedy is available if the phone cannot be used with your carrier. Then verify the status after delivery. On an iPhone in hand, open Settings > General > About and check Carrier Lock: “No SIM restrictions” means it is unlocked; a carrier name means it can be used only with that carrier.

Apple’s U.S. Store guidance says iPhones financed through the AT&T Installment Plan, T-Mobile Equipment Installment Plan, or Verizon Device Payment Program remain carrier-locked until paid in full. Before paying, ask about physical damage, battery health, and parts or service history. Find out how the seller certifies refurbished devices, and read the return policy in case the phone does not match its description. Apple recommends buying from a reliable seller and not buying a device that is Activation Locked. If an online purchase displays “iPhone Locked to Owner,” Apple says to return it: If you want to buy a preowned iPhone.

Inspect parts and service information where available
On supported iPhones running iOS 15.2 or later, open Settings > General > About and look for Parts and Service History. A “Genuine Apple Part” label indicates a replacement made with genuine Apple parts and processes. “Unknown” can mean a part was installed incompletely, is nongenuine or previously used, or is not working as expected. The information shown depends on the iPhone model and its repair history; not every device provides the same history.
Allow time to test the phone after delivery
Check the display, sides, back, and charging connector for damage. Confirm that the phone powers on and charges, then set it up and test core functions promptly while the return period is still open. A Hello screen means the phone has been erased; Apple notes that it cannot be tested until it is set up. An initial check may not reveal every possible defect, so use the seller’s stated return process if the device differs from the listing.

Compare the whole offer, not just the discount
Compare listings using the same information rather than the headline price or discount. A simple checklist keeps important differences visible:

- Actual seller and recent seller feedback
- Written carrier-lock status and compatibility with your carrier and plan
- For preowned phones, battery and parts or service disclosures
- Total cost, including taxes, shipping, and fees
- Return deadline, return shipping cost, and any restocking fee
- Delivery promise and payment protections
- Warranty terms and AppleCare eligibility, if relevant
Pay safely and keep records
The FTC recommends using a credit card where possible or a secure payment system with buyer protections. Avoid requests for gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, or payment outside a marketplace’s system; taking a transaction off-platform may remove its protections. Keep the order confirmation, receipt, seller messages, and saved listing.

If the phone never arrives or is materially different from the listing, contact the seller and marketplace promptly, then ask your payment provider about dispute options. Applicable rights and deadlines vary by payment method and jurisdiction. The FTC reported that online shopping scams were the second-most reported type of scam to it in 2022; that figure covers online shopping broadly, not iPhone purchases specifically. Check return, warranty, and AppleCare terms for this purchase
Return rights depend on where you buy and the applicable terms and law. Apple’s U.S. Store says eligible products bought from Apple can be returned within 14 days after receipt, subject to its conditions. Apple products bought from other retailers are governed by those retailers’ return policies. Apple also describes a limited price-reduction refund or credit policy within 14 calendar days, with exceptions that include limited-time price reductions and special sales events. These are Apple Store terms, not a general return guarantee for other sellers; check the live policy for the actual seller and purchase location at Apple’s iPhone Shopping Help.
For Apple coverage, use the serial-number coverage lookup and review Apple’s AppleCare eligibility guidance. Eligibility can require a device check, may depend on the phone being in good condition, and varies by device and country or region. A coverage lookup or advertised warranty does not replace checking the actual coverage terms and confirming that this particular phone qualifies.
