Before buying an AMD GPU for local AI, verify that the exact card, operating system, ROCm release, and framework you plan to use are supported together. Then check the card’s actual VRAM against your intended models and context sizes. A compatibility listing is a useful first filter, not proof of speed, value, or support in every third-party application.
1. Confirm the exact GPU is supported
Do not rely on a product family name such as “Radeon RX 9000” or assume that support for one model extends to another. Match the precise product model to AMD’s compatibility documentation for the ROCm release and operating system you intend to install. Start with AMD’s Radeon compatibility matrix and check the relevant release notes.

As a dated Linux example, AMD’s ROCm 7.2 release notes, published January 21, 2026, list the RX 9070 XT, RX 9070, RX 9070 GRE, RX 9060 XT, RX 7900 XTX, RX 7900 XT, RX 7900 GRE, RX 7800 XT, and RX 7700 XT, along with selected Radeon PRO models. That list describes ROCm 7.2 on Linux; it is not a guarantee for another release, operating system, or framework. See the ROCm 7.2 release notes and verify the current matrix before purchasing.
2. Match the operating system and framework
Support can differ across Linux, Windows, and APU configurations. AMD’s current ROCm overview describes Radeon support for PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, and ONNX on Linux, while its Radeon Windows coverage lists PyTorch. For Linux inference, AMD also names vLLM and llama.cpp. These are platform- and release-scoped support statements; check the matrix for your exact combination rather than treating one framework list as universal.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
AMD says, “Llama.cpp: Supported for efficient inference.” That confirms a software-support position, not a speed result. Consult AMD’s ROCm on Radeon and Ryzen documentation for the current framework and platform coverage.
Windows APU support is a separate case
Do not transfer a Linux Radeon GPU list to Windows or assume it applies to an APU. AMD’s Windows PyTorch matrix for ROCm 7.2.1 lists Windows 11 and supported Ryzen AI processors, including Ryzen AI Max+ 395, Max 390, Max 385, and selected HX, 365, 465, 470, and 475 models. Check AMD’s Windows compatibility matrix for the specific processor and software release.

3. Check the actual memory on the SKU
VRAM capacity is a product-specific specification, not something you can infer from the Radeon name or GPU tier. Confirm the memory on the exact board you are considering. AMD advertises workstation Radeon configurations up to 48 GB of VRAM, but that is a maximum across configurations—not the capacity of every Radeon PRO model. Likewise, AMD’s supported Ryzen APUs can offer up to 128 GB of shared memory; that figure is not dedicated GPU VRAM and does not apply to every APU. See AMD’s Radeon and Ryzen overview and the exact product specifications.

Model weights are only part of the memory requirement. The context length you want to use and the runtime also consume memory, so compare your expected total needs with usable GPU memory rather than matching a model to VRAM by name alone. A general local-LLM explanation notes that moving work into system memory and onto the CPU can reduce performance; this is general guidance, not an AMD-specific measurement. See Tom’s Hardware’s local-LLM guide.

If a model’s memory needs exceed the GPU’s capacity, an application may use system memory or CPU processing, but the result depends on the model, software, and configuration. Do not treat advertised shared-memory capacity as equivalent to dedicated VRAM or assume it guarantees a particular model or context will run well.
5. Check installation and system prerequisites
Compatibility depends on more than the card. Before ordering, check the supported system and motherboard requirements, operating-system version, driver, ROCm release, and any framework-specific installation instructions. AMD’s installation documentation directs users to the compatibility matrix; an Ubuntu 24.04 APU installation path specifies OEM kernel 6.14. That requirement is specific to that path, not a general requirement for every Radeon setup. Use AMD’s installation and compatibility documentation to follow the instructions for your hardware.

- Read the installation path. Verify driver, kernel, and other listed prerequisites before building around the hardware.
6. Treat compatibility and performance as different questions
The official material cited here establishes compatibility and software support; it does not provide a like-for-like performance or price-performance ranking for these Radeon cards. It therefore cannot establish a “best” AMD GPU for local AI, a tokens-per-second figure, or a model-capacity estimate. Compare current independent benchmarks only when they test the cards under comparable models, software, settings, and workload conditions; check current prices and product specifications separately.

For example, the RX 9070 XT appears in AMD’s ROCm 7.2 Linux compatibility list, which makes it a candidate to investigate—not a performance recommendation. Compatibility alone does not establish current availability, price, or how fast it will run your chosen application.
