Before buying an AI-enabled connected device, find out what information the specific model collects, whether it sends data to a cloud service or uses it to train AI, which privacy controls it provides, and how long it will receive security updates. “AI-enabled” does not tell you what a product records, stores, shares, or learns from; those answers depend on its documentation, app settings, and the way you plan to use it.
Use the checks below to compare products that serve the same purpose. Give extra weight to camera and microphone controls for devices with those sensors, and to update support and continued operation for products you expect to rely on for years. Legal requirements discussed here are UK-specific unless stated otherwise.

Start with the product’s data practices
Look for the privacy notice and product documentation for the exact model, not just a general description of its AI features. A product may process information on the device, send it to a cloud service, or do both. The word “AI” alone does not establish which of these happens, whether recordings are retained, or whether data is used to train or improve a model.
Identify what it needs to work
Check what information is required for the product’s core function and what is requested only for optional features. Depending on the product, the information may include audio, video, location, contacts, photos, health information, or details about household routines. Ask how often information is collected, how long it is kept, and whether it is sent to other organisations. The manufacturer should explain why sharing occurs and identify the relevant recipients or categories of recipient.

Separate essential operation from extras. For example, a device may have a basic function and additional features that need an account, more permissions, or an internet connection. Do not assume a feature is optional—or that it works without a connection—unless the product documentation says so. If an explanation is vague, ask the seller or manufacturer before purchase what data the feature needs and what happens when you do not enable it.
Ask what happens to recordings and other sensitive data
If the device has a microphone or camera, look specifically for whether audio or video is processed locally, transmitted, stored, or made available for review. The answer can differ by model and feature. Also check whether a recording is triggered by a user action, a detected event, or another setting described by the manufacturer. Do not infer that a device saves recordings merely because it has a sensor, or that it does not save them because a feature is described as private.
Consider the setting where the device will be used. A camera in a shared room, a health-related device, or a product that observes a child can involve information about people other than the account holder. Think about who may be captured, who can access the account, and whether other household members can use the product without understanding its settings.
Find out whether product data is used to train AI
Look for a clear statement on whether information collected by the product is used to train or improve AI systems. Check whether the policy distinguishes between improving the device’s own features, developing broader models, human review, and service analytics. These purposes are not interchangeable, and a general statement that data is used to “improve services” may not answer whether it is used for AI training.
Check what choice the manufacturer offers. Determine whether training or other secondary uses are on by default, whether you can opt out, and whether the choice applies to existing data as well as future collection. If the product has separate settings for recordings, diagnostics, personalization, or model improvement, read each one rather than treating a single privacy toggle as a complete answer.
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) guidance for IoT providers says they should consider whether reusing personal information from an IoT product to train generative AI is compatible with the original collection purpose and whether a new lawful basis is needed. That is guidance for providers under UK data-protection rules, not a product-specific finding or a universal rule for every country. For a buying decision, the practical question is whether the manufacturer explains its uses and gives you meaningful controls.

Review the companion app before granting access
A connected product may rely on a phone app for setup, remote control, alerts, or account management. The app may ask for access to the phone’s microphone, approximate or precise location, camera, contacts, or photos. Check which permissions are needed for the functions you intend to use, and whether the operating system lets you deny them or limit access to when the app is in use.
Test permissions against the feature you want
For each requested permission, ask what feature needs it and whether that feature is central to your purchase. If location is requested, for example, determine whether it is needed for the product’s main operation or only for a location-dependent extra. If contacts or photos are requested, look for an explanation of what the app does with them. The ICO advises consumers to use privacy controls when permissions seem unreasonable or excessive; a permission request is a reason to investigate, not proof by itself of misuse.
You may not be able to judge the app’s permission requests until installation, so consult the product documentation, app-store privacy information, or the manufacturer before buying. Do not count on every permission being optional: verify which functions stop working if access is denied. Where the phone offers a limited setting, such as access only while using the app, consider whether it supports your intended use.
Look for account-level privacy choices
In the product’s account settings, check whether you can limit data sharing, personalized advertising, or optional diagnostics. The exact labels and choices vary by product, so do not assume that a setting exists because another device offers it. Find out whether a choice affects only future collection or also data already held, and whether turning off a feature changes core functionality.
Check the controls on the device itself
When a product has a camera or microphone, inspect the physical controls as well as the app settings. A camera cover can block the lens it covers. It does not disable a microphone, prevent collection by other sensors, or establish that the device is not sharing other data. A compatible privacy cover may be a useful optional accessory for a camera-equipped device, but it is not a substitute for understanding the product’s data practices.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a smart speaker, the ICO gives a physical microphone switch as an example of a feature a buyer may value. Check the product documentation to learn what that switch does and how to tell when it is active. Treat it as one device control, not evidence that all other data collection or account activity stops. Also check whether the product has clear status indicators and whether its controls are easy for other household users to understand.

If you need a sensor to be unavailable at particular times, verify the mechanism that achieves that result before buying. A setting in an app, a physical switch, and disconnecting a product from the internet may have different effects. Only the manufacturer’s documentation can establish how a particular model behaves.
Check how long security updates are promised
A connected device can remain in use long after purchase, so find the manufacturer’s security-update commitment for the exact model. Look for a minimum support period, when that period begins or ends if stated, and how updates are delivered. Consider the device firmware, the companion app, and any cloud service the product depends on: support for one component does not automatically establish support for the others.
A clear commitment is more useful than a general assurance that the product is “secure” or “regularly updated.” If the manufacturer does not state a period, ask the seller or manufacturer before buying. An undisclosed or vague commitment makes it harder to judge how long the product will receive fixes; it is a legitimate reason to pause, especially for a device you plan to keep for years.
The UK Government’s consumer IoT Code of Practice says that the minimum software-update support period should be made clear to consumers when they buy. The UK consumer connectable-product security regime took effect on 29 April 2024. Within its scope, baseline requirements include banning universal or easily guessed default passwords, publishing a route for reporting security issues, and publishing minimum security-update periods. Scope depends on the product and the relevant actors, and these UK requirements should not be treated as universal rules.
Consider what an update or outage means for the device
The UK Code of Practice says basic functions should continue during an update wherever possible, with a watch, thermostat, and lock among its examples. For any device you depend on, check what its documentation says about operation during an update, a failed update, or a cloud-service outage. This is especially important for safety-relevant or household-critical uses. It is a buyer’s question to investigate, not a guarantee about any unnamed product.
Find out whether updates install automatically, require your approval, or need a particular app or connection. The manufacturer’s instructions should explain how to tell when an update is available or complete. If an update process could interrupt a function you rely on, understand the alternatives and recovery steps before making the device part of an essential routine.

Look at account security and vulnerability reporting
Check how you create and protect the account used by the device. Look for individual credentials rather than a shared, universal password, and see whether the service offers multifactor authentication. Also look for a public way to report a security issue, such as a vulnerability-reporting contact or process. These are useful signs of a defined security process, but marketing copy alone cannot verify a manufacturer’s internal practices, including how it implements encryption.
In its 11 June 2026 announcement of final smart-device guidance, the ICO described security as an ongoing obligation that includes regular updates, encryption, and multifactor authentication. The announcement quoted William Malcolm, the ICO’s Executive Director for Regulatory Risk and Innovation: “Connected devices process some of the most sensitive data about people’s lives, from data about health to daily routines and family life.” For a buyer, the actionable checks are whether account protection is available, whether updates have a stated support period, and whether a reporting route is published.
UK consumer connectable-product rules began on 29 April 2024, but whether a particular device or seller falls within the regime depends on legal scope. If you are buying outside the UK, check the rules that apply where you live rather than assuming the UK baseline applies to your purchase.
Use a higher bar for devices children may use
If a product is designed for children or is likely to be accessed by them, check age suitability, child profiles, access controls, and what the manufacturer says about children’s information. Look for the default privacy settings before assuming an adult can configure the device after setup. Consider whether a child can activate sensors, share content, change account settings, or interact with people outside the household.
The ICO’s IoT accountability guidance says that, under UK data-protection rules, providers should set high privacy by default for products aimed at children or likely to be accessed by them, and collect and retain only the minimum personal information needed. That describes ICO guidance for providers in a UK legal context; it is not identical legal language worldwide. A buyer should still check the product’s specific defaults and controls rather than relying on its age label alone.

Compare products using the same questions
When two products meet the same need, compare their documentation on equivalent terms. A feature-rich device is not automatically the better choice if its data practices or support commitment do not fit your household. Weight each factor according to the product’s purpose: sensor controls can matter most for a camera or baby monitor, while update duration and continued basic operation may matter more for a connected appliance.

| What to compare | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Data collection and sharing | Information needed for core operation, optional collection, retention, sharing recipients or categories, and stated purposes. | Shows what information the product handles and whether its practices fit the way you plan to use it. |
| AI training and other secondary uses | A direct statement about training or improving AI, plus any opt-out or other controls. | Prevents assumptions based on the presence of an AI feature alone. |
| Privacy controls | Useful physical controls, app permissions, account settings, and the effect of disabling a feature. | Helps you judge whether the device can be configured for your household’s needs. |
| Security support | A minimum update period for the exact model, the delivery process, and information about the app or service where relevant. | Clarifies how long the manufacturer commits to maintaining security after sale. |
| Account protection and reporting | Available account protections, including multifactor authentication where offered, and a published security-issue reporting route. | Provides concrete information about account controls and how security concerns can be raised. |
| Connection and essential functions | Which features need an account or internet connection, and what works during an outage or update. | Matters if you need a product to keep performing a basic function when a service is unavailable. |
| Household access | Child profiles, access controls, and how multiple users’ information and permissions are handled. | One purchaser’s preferences may not suit children or other people who use or appear around the device. |
Do not fill gaps with guesses. If one manufacturer does not disclose a comparable detail, record it as unknown and ask for clarification. A product’s documentation may be spread across a privacy notice, setup guide, support page, and app description; compare the same topic across each candidate before deciding.
Check second-hand, inherited, or transferred devices carefully
A used or inherited device can retain a connection to another person’s account or data. Before relying on it, check whether the previous owner can be removed, whether a factory reset is documented, and whether the model still receives security updates. Deleting an app from a phone is not the same as erasing information held by an account or on the device.
- Confirm ownership and reset options. Ask the previous owner to remove the device from their account where possible. Find the manufacturer’s documented factory-reset procedure and confirm whether it removes account associations as well as local settings.
- Reset the device and review its settings. Follow the product’s instructions, then inspect privacy and security settings before reconnecting it to household use.
- Review the phone app and permissions. Check the permissions of phones that will interact with the device, and limit access that is not needed for the functions you intend to use.
- Create your own account and update promptly. The FTC’s January 2018 advice for connected devices transferred with a home recommends resetting devices, reviewing privacy settings and interacting-phone permissions, creating an account, and updating devices promptly.
- Check support and warranties. Verify that the model still receives updates and whether any warranty or support policy transfers to a new owner; do not assume coverage follows the device.
When you stop using a connected product, the ICO advises erasing information through the device settings and considering account deletion. Use the manufacturer’s process rather than relying on app removal alone, and check whether the device needs to be deregistered or reset before disposal or transfer.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Make the final decision based on your use
Before paying, make sure you can answer the questions that matter for your situation: what data the product needs, where recordings or other sensitive information go, whether data is used for AI training, which controls you can actually use, and how long security updates are promised. For a device that children may use, add age-appropriate access and privacy defaults. For a device you depend on, check internet dependence and what happens when updates or services fail.
If an important answer is missing, seek it from the manufacturer or seller while you still have a choice. A clear published commitment is easier to evaluate than an assurance without a model-specific policy or support period. Choose the product whose documented practices and controls fit the device’s role in your home—not simply the one with the most AI features.
