Before paying for a used or refurbished PS5, verify that it works, inspect its condition and serial number, confirm it can access PlayStation services, and get the seller’s return and warranty terms in writing. If possible, test it in person and make sure it has been reset so it no longer depends on the previous owner’s account.
Start with the seller and the terms of the sale
Check the seller’s ratings and feedback, then ask for the exact PS5 model, its purchase date or receipt if available, the reason it is being sold, and a list of everything included. Get any return window or warranty promise in writing. A private seller’s assurance is not the same as a retailer’s documented return policy.

Sony’s US buying guide recommends checking seller reviews and reputation. It also cautions that a third-party used PlayStation product “may not be under warranty.” Warranty coverage depends on the seller, product and country, so verify the actual policy rather than relying on the words “used” or “refurbished.”
Ask for a working demonstration
Before making a trip, request a recent video showing the console powering on, producing a stable picture, connecting to the internet, and testing its buttons and ports. If it has a disc drive, ask to see a disc read and eject. Sony recommends video proof for these checks, but a video cannot reliably show image quality, overheating, or every physical defect.
#1 Best Overall
- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Whenever possible, test the console yourself before handing over money:
- Connect it to a display and check that both picture and sound are stable.
- Test the HDMI connection and each accessible USB port.
- Connect to the internet and verify that PlayStation services are accessible.
- Test the controller’s buttons and sticks, and check its wireless connection.
- On a disc model, insert a game, confirm it is recognized, and test ejection.
- Run a game for a while and watch for shutdowns, instability, or signs of excessive heat.
Sony’s buying guidance names power-on, internet access, ports, buttons, disc-drive operation, image quality, overheating and damage as checks. A longer play session is a practical way to look for instability, not a standardized Sony test or guarantee of future reliability.
Inspect the console and confirm its identity
Look closely for cracks, impact damage, corrosion, signs of liquid exposure, excessive dust and damaged connectors. Check that the serial number is present and legible. Sony flags broken seals and removed serial numbers in its buying guidance; its US PS5 warranty terms also list altered, defaced or removed serial numbers and certain unauthorized opening or service among warranty exclusions.
A visible serial number does not prove the console has clean ownership, and an intact seal does not prove it has no faults. Treat either as one part of the inspection, not a guarantee.
Check online access and the seller’s account control
Connect the console to the internet and confirm that it can reach PlayStation services. Sony warns that products reported lost or stolen may be permanently suspended from those services. Ask the seller to deactivate the console and remove their access. If they cannot demonstrate service access or will not relinquish account control, pause the sale until the issue is resolved.
Arrange a clean handoff
Ask the seller to back up any data they want to keep, sign out and deactivate as appropriate, then reset the console before transfer. Sony’s Canadian transfer and disposal guidance recommends backing up data and resetting a console when transferring or disposing of it. The cited instructions are for Canada; consult PlayStation support for your region if the process or menu labels differ.
Before completing the handoff, confirm that the console starts at its initial setup screen and does not require the former owner’s credentials.
Rank #2

Confirm the model and everything included
Identify whether the PS5 is a disc or digital model and record its exact model generation. Check that every advertised item is actually present and working, including the controller, power cable, HDMI cable, stand or base, and any extras. Test the disc drive only if the console has one; do not count an accessory simply because the listing says it is included.

“Used” usually means previously owned. “Refurbished” is a seller or program label; it does not, by itself, establish what was inspected, repaired or covered. Compare the specific offer’s condition, included items, return terms and warranty instead of assuming all refurbished consoles follow the same process.
Sony’s US buying guide distinguishes third-party used products from certified refurbished PlayStation products, which it says include a warranty. PlayStation Direct’s US listing for a certified refurbished PS5 Digital Edition slim model shows that a manufacturer-certified option exists; its stock and terms may change. A marketplace label such as “renewed” is not proof of Sony certification.
For each offer, ask who provides the warranty, when it starts, how long it lasts, which faults it covers, what exclusions apply, who pays shipping, and whether repair or replacement is offered. Also check the return period and whether the console must be returned with its accessories. Get the applicable policy in writing.

Warranty rules are regional. Sony’s warranty page cited here is for the US. Sony’s UK buying guide notes that third-party used products may not be covered by Sony’s warranty while also stating that this does not affect statutory rights under applicable law. Check the rules for your own country rather than applying US or UK terms elsewhere.
Compare offers without relying on a universal “good price”
There is no reliable fixed price threshold for a good used PS5 deal: the sources cited here do not establish comparable transaction prices or a standard premium for certified refurbished units. Compare current offers in your country and weigh the same factors for each:
- Disc-drive or digital capability and exact model.
- Physical condition and demonstrated operation.
- Seller identity, reputation and willingness to allow checks.
- Included accessories, confirmed present and working.
- Written return window and the warranty issuer, duration and exclusions.
- Total price against a current, comparable offer.
No universal official pass/fail test establishes a console’s remaining lifespan, total hours of use, fan condition, controller stick drift or private-sale diagnostic status. You can check fan noise and controller sticks as practical inspection points, but do not treat those observations as an official Sony certification or a guarantee of how long the console will last.
