Before paying, confirm the iPhone can be activated, check its carrier-lock and IMEI status with your intended carrier, and test calls, texts, and mobile data on a working SIM or eSIM with Wi-Fi off. A “No Service,” “Searching,” or “SOS” message is a symptom—not proof that the phone’s hardware is faulty. Keep a return option open while any uncertainty is resolved.
1. Check activation, the seller, and the return terms
Ask the seller to erase and activate the iPhone while you are present, then complete setup and reach the Home Screen. An iPhone at the Hello screen cannot be fully tested until it has been set up and activated.

If it displays “iPhone Locked to Owner,” do not buy it unless the seller removes Activation Lock and you can complete setup. Apple’s advice is direct: don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.
Before handing over money, establish the return period and whether a reported cellular fault qualifies for a return. Ask what the seller’s inspection or certification covers; a “certified” label alone does not show that the phone was tested on your carrier. Apple also recommends buying from a reliable seller and understanding the return policy before purchasing a pre-owned iPhone (Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guidance).
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
2. Check the carrier lock and eligibility on your network
Read the carrier-lock status on the phone
On a set-up iPhone, open Settings > General > About and find Network Provider Lock or Carrier Lock. Apple says “No SIM restrictions” means the iPhone is unlocked. If a carrier is named, the device may be restricted to that carrier until it is unlocked. Only the current carrier can unlock an iPhone (Apple’s unlocking guidance).
Unlocked does not mean guaranteed to work on every network. The model, carrier eligibility rules, device status, and plan still matter.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- There will be no visible cosmetic imperfections when held at an arm’s length.
- This product is eligible for a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt if you are not satisfied.
- Product may come in generic Box.
Run the IMEI through your intended carrier
Find the IMEI under Settings > General > About. Before setup, the Hello screen’s information button may also show device identifiers. Give the IMEI to the carrier you plan to use and check its compatibility and eligibility process before purchase. Apple advises checking with the carrier whether a device is blocked or barred; its cellular guidance explains how to find the IMEI (Apple: find the serial number or IMEI).

For example, AT&T’s bring-your-own-device guidance has separate checks for compatibility, unlock status, and lost, stolen, or fraud status (AT&T BYOD). Use your own carrier’s current process: eligibility rules and device-status systems can change and may differ by country.

- Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
- Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
- Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
In the United States, CTIA’s Stolen Phone Checker can help check whether a phone has been reported lost or stolen. CTIA says a red status alert means wireless service may be blocked (CTIA Stolen Phone Checker). A clean result is only a status check; it does not prove that the phone’s hardware is sound or that every carrier will accept it.
3. Test cellular service directly
A status-bar message is a clue, not a diagnosis. Apple explains that “No Service” or “Searching” means the device is not connected to a cellular network. Possible causes include account or plan problems, weak coverage or an outage, a blocked device, SIM or eSIM setup, or a hardware issue (Apple cellular troubleshooting).

- Use a known-working connection. If the iPhone has a physical SIM tray, insert a working SIM that is compatible with the intended network. For eSIM, have the carrier confirm that the phone and plan can be provisioned.
- Check the active line. On a Dual SIM iPhone, open Settings > Cellular and confirm that the intended line is present and turned on.
- Turn Wi-Fi off. This ensures that the following checks use cellular service rather than a Wi-Fi connection.
- Place a call, send a text, and load a web page. Verify that all three work on the intended network. This is a practical buyer check, not a test procedure Apple specifically prescribes.
- Record any failure precisely. Note the alert or symptom—for example, “SIM not detected,” calls failing, or data not loading—and whether it happens in the location where you tested.
Apple’s troubleshooting steps include checking the plan and carrier lock, restarting the phone, checking carrier settings, reseating or trying another physical SIM, and contacting the carrier about eSIM issues (Apple cellular troubleshooting). Do not treat one failed attempt in a location with poor coverage as proof of hardware damage; check coverage, outages, account status, and the SIM or eSIM setup first.

If setup or activation fails, determine the exact message before deciding the phone is faulty. Apple notes that activation can be affected by conditions such as Wi-Fi connectivity or an unavailable activation server; it also directs users with an invalid or unsupported SIM/eSIM message to contact the carrier (Apple activation guidance). Activation Lock is a separate ownership barrier: the seller must remove it before you proceed.

4. Review repair history and ask what the symptom means
When available, Parts and Service History appears under Settings > General > About. Apple says its visibility depends on the iPhone model, iOS version (15.2 or later), and whether a part has been replaced. “Genuine Apple Part” refers to a genuine replacement using Apple parts and processes. “Unknown” can indicate an incomplete installation, a nongenuine or previously used part, or a part that is not functioning as expected. The history may not appear on every phone, and it does not by itself identify the cause of cellular problems (Apple’s pre-owned iPhone guidance).
Ask the seller what was actually observed: no signal in every location, intermittent service, a SIM-not-detected alert, failed calls in one area, or inability to activate. Reproduce the issue with the intended carrier if possible. Coverage, outages, account status, device blocking, and setup are among the causes Apple says to investigate before assuming a hardware fault (Apple cellular troubleshooting).
5. Compare candidates and decide when to walk away
If you are considering several phones, compare the same checks for each rather than letting a lower price substitute for evidence that the phone works.

Quick Recap
| Check | What to record |
|---|---|
| Activation | Whether setup reaches the Home Screen and Activation Lock has been removed. |
| Carrier lock | The Network Provider Lock or Carrier Lock status shown in Settings. |
| Carrier eligibility and device status | The intended carrier’s IMEI-check result and any lost/stolen status result. |
| Working service | Whether a compatible SIM/eSIM supports a call, text, and mobile data with Wi-Fi off. |
| Reported symptom | The exact alert and whether it can be reproduced, including location and carrier where practical. |
| Seller protection | Return terms for the reported fault and what the seller’s inspection or certification covered. |
| Repair context | Any visible Parts and Service History and what remains uncertain about the cellular issue. |
- Walk away if the seller cannot remove Activation Lock, refuses a reasonable IMEI or service check, will not clarify return terms for an acknowledged cellular issue, or pressures you to accept a phone you cannot activate.
- Seek diagnosis or use the return option if the carrier confirms the account, plan, coverage, and device status are in order but the phone still fails with a known-working SIM or eSIM. Apple says service may be needed when carrier checks reveal no issue and hardware is suspected; repair estimates depend on inspection, and service availability varies by location and parts availability (Apple iPhone repair and service).
