Before buying a smart air conditioner, check that its capacity suits the room, that the unit physically and electrically fits your home, and that its efficiency and connected features meet your needs. Wi-Fi is only one part of the decision: sizing, installation and sealing can matter just as much to comfort and energy use.
What should I check before buying a smart air conditioner?
Use this checklist to compare the exact models you are considering:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Room area and the unit’s cooling capacity, in Btu per hour (Btu/h).
- Installation format, opening dimensions, mounting hardware and rated voltage.
- ENERGY STAR certification, CEER and energy-use information for comparable models.
- The specific app, scheduling, remote-control and smart-home functions you will use.
- Compressor type, published sound information and installation materials.
- Whether your utility offers a compatible demand-response program, if that feature matters to you.
What should I look for when buying a room air conditioner?
Match capacity to the room
Measure the room’s floor area, then use ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner sizing chart as a starting point. The chart assumes an eight-foot ceiling. For example, it pairs 5,000 Btu/h with 100 to under 150 square feet, and 6,000 Btu/h with 150 to under 250 square feet. A higher ceiling or an unusual layout may need extra consideration.

Do not assume a larger unit is automatically better. ENERGY STAR cautions that an oversized air conditioner can cool a room before it removes enough moisture, leaving the air feeling damp or clammy.

Confirm the unit and opening are compatible
First identify the installation type you need: a standard window unit, a U-shaped or saddle-style design, a casement-window model, or a through-wall unit. Measure the opening and check the exact model’s installation guide for its required dimensions, clearances and mounting instructions. ENERGY STAR’s certified product directory can help you screen models by details such as mounting type, cooling capacity, rated voltage and whether a support bracket is required. Use the manufacturer’s manual to confirm the precise fit.
Some U-shaped or saddle-style designs allow a window to open and close and place the compressor outside the room. These are design features to verify for the particular model, not guarantees that apply to every unit.
Compare efficiency, not just the smart label
Check ENERGY STAR certification, the model’s Combined Energy Efficiency Ratio (CEER) and available energy-use information. Compare units with similar capacity and configuration; a rating is most useful when the products are alike. ENERGY STAR’s room air conditioner criteria outline efficiency requirements by capacity and configuration.

Connected controls and energy efficiency are separate attributes. Certification and ratings can help narrow your choices, but your actual operating cost also depends on how much you use the unit, electricity prices, room conditions and installation quality.
Which smart features should I verify?
“Smart” does not describe one fixed feature set. ENERGY STAR identifies remote on/off control, scheduling and energy-use feedback among functions offered by connected room air conditioners. Check the exact model’s current product information to see which features it supports and whether they work the way you expect.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do compressor type and sound affect the choice?
ENERGY STAR recommends considering a variable-speed compressor. Its guidance contrasts variable output with a conventional compressor that switches between full operation and off, and says variable-speed operation can manage temperature more quietly and efficiently. For a noise-sensitive room, compare model-specific published sound ratings and independent test results where available; general category guidance does not establish the noise level of an individual product.

Read the installation manual and check the included kit before ordering. ENERGY STAR warns that an improperly installed room air conditioner can leak as much air as a six-square-inch hole; this is its comparison, not a measurement of every installation. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use the included insulation materials. ENERGY STAR’s Version 5.0 specification describes window-unit weather stripping or gasket material intended to seal gaps around the unit and window opening.
Check that the included sealing materials suit your particular window. If you plan to use an accessory sealing kit, confirm that it is suitable for the exact model and opening, and do not use it in place of required mounting or safety hardware.
How do I check electrical requirements?
Compare the exact model’s voltage, plug, current and circuit instructions with the outlet and circuit available where you plan to install it. The ENERGY STAR directory lists rated voltage, but that information alone does not establish whether a particular home circuit is adequate. Consult the model’s manufacturer documentation for its electrical requirements.
