Before you buy a rare or obscure retro console, confirm the exact model and region, get evidence that it works, inspect its power supply and condition, and check what is included. Then verify that the console will work with the games, display, accessories, and electrical setup you intend to use. A listing marked “tested” is only a claim until you know what the seller actually tested.
What to ask the seller before paying
Identify the exact console and region
Ask for the manufacturer, model number or revision, and region, plus clear photos of the actual item. Request close-ups of labels, connectors, serial numbers, and any claimed accessories. Compare those details with the listing; names that sound similar can refer to different versions with different parts or compatibility.

There is no universal authenticity database covering every console brand. Missing, altered, or unclear identification is a reason to ask for more evidence, not proof by itself that a console is counterfeit.

Find out what “tested” means
Ask for a current video showing the console starting, producing a stable picture and sound, responding to controls, and reading a game or disc. Have the seller demonstrate the ports and functions relevant to that model. Sony’s used PlayStation buying guidance recommends video evidence of ports, buttons, and disc drives, followed by direct inspection of image quality, overheating, and damage. Apply the principle to the console you are considering: for a cartridge system, ask to see a compatible cartridge load; for a handheld, ask to see its screen and controls working.

A video shows only what worked at the time it was recorded. It cannot establish long-term reliability, reveal every intermittent fault, or replace an in-person inspection.
Confirm the power supply and cables
Ask whether the adapter and cables shown are included and whether they are appropriate for the exact model and market. A plug that fits is not evidence that an adapter has the correct electrical rating. Confirm the required voltage, polarity, and connector from documentation for that console rather than guessing from appearance.
Nintendo’s Super NES Classic Edition troubleshooting guidance gives a model-specific example: an inadequate power source can leave the screen blank even when the power light is on. Nintendo identifies adapter model CLV-003 for that system. Do not treat that adapter or its troubleshooting instructions as a recommendation for other consoles.

Review feedback and ask what happens if the console arrives in a different condition from the listing. For an online purchase, confirm shipping, returns, and dispute terms on the actual listing before paying; protections vary by seller and platform. How to inspect a console in person
Look for physical damage or alterations
- Inspect the case, seams, labels, connectors, and ports for cracks, corrosion, bent contacts, or signs of repair.
- Check cable insulation for cuts, fraying, kinks, or exposed wire.
- Look at controllers and buttons for damage or inconsistent wear.
- Note missing or removed serial numbers and broken seals. Sony lists serial numbers and seals among inspection points for its products; treat those as product-specific checks, not a universal authentication test.
Test the functions that matter
- Connect the console using the appropriate power supply and video connection for its model.
- Start it and check for a stable picture and sound.
- Test the controls and relevant ports rather than relying only on a power light.
- Load a compatible game and confirm it starts and remains playable. For a disc-based system, test the drive with a suitable disc.
- During a reasonable demonstration, watch for shutdowns, picture loss, unusual heat, or intermittent behavior.
The exact test depends on the system. Sony recommends checking image quality and overheating for used PlayStation products, but its guide does not define a universal safe temperature or test duration.
Compare the bundle with the listing
Write down what is included: console, power supply, video cable, controllers, memory cards or other model-specific parts, games, and packaging. Compare that list with the seller’s description. Missing parts can add cost or be difficult to find, so account for them before deciding. Packaging or a manual may support a listing’s story, but completeness does not prove authenticity.
How to assess authenticity without overclaiming
Inspect the console and each bundled item separately. A genuine-looking box does not establish that the hardware or accessories inside are genuine. Ask for clear photos of markings and labels, and be cautious if the seller cannot explain where the item came from or what has been replaced.

Nintendo warns about counterfeit Nintendo products and look-alike retro devices with unauthorized pre-installed games in its intellectual-property and piracy FAQ. It also says its licensed gaming accessories and peripherals carry an Official Nintendo Licensed Product Seal; Nintendo’s licensed-products guidance notes that unlicensed accessories may not work or may have compatibility problems. These are Nintendo-specific warnings and marks. Do not use Nintendo’s seal as an authenticity test for Sony, Sega, Atari, or another manufacturer.

Verify compatibility for the exact model
Before buying, check whether the console will work with the games and accessories you plan to use, and with your display and power setup. Confirm the console region, game region, video output standard, power requirements, and any model-specific accessory requirements. Do not assume all retro systems are region-locked—or that they are all region-free.
Nintendo’s Switch regional compatibility FAQ says most Switch software is not region-locked, with a stated China-region exception, while also addressing regional support, voltage, accessories, and warranty. That guidance applies to Switch products, not vintage consoles as a class. For an older or obscure system, use documentation for that specific model and market; check a game’s region and language as well.

When to pause or walk away
- The seller will not identify the model or provide item-specific photos.
- “Tested” is not explained, and the seller refuses a reasonable demonstration.
- Labels, serial numbers, connectors, or included parts do not match the listing’s claims.
- The power supply is unidentified or its suitability cannot be confirmed.
- The asking price is far below the usual range, the seller pressures you to pay outside the platform, or “refurbished” is asserted without an explanation of what was done.
- Return or dispute terms are unclear and the seller will not clarify them.
Nintendo specifically cautions buyers about unusually low prices and false refurbishment claims in its counterfeit-products and piracy FAQ. That warning is a reason to investigate, not a price guide for a particular console.
