Before buying a OnePlus phone online, verify the exact model and regional version, confirm that your carrier will activate it, check the IMEI through OnePlus’s official inquiry, and establish who is responsible for warranty service and returns. A model’s supported frequency bands and a passing IMEI inquiry are useful checks, but neither guarantees carrier activation or warranty coverage.
1. Identify the exact model and regional version
A listing that names only a OnePlus family or series does not give you enough information to check its specifications or network compatibility. Ask the seller for a clear photo of the box label or the device’s model identifier, then compare that identifier with the specifications for the same model on OnePlus’s U.S. specifications page. Specifications can differ by model and market, so do not rely on a familiar product-family name alone.

Also ask whether the phone is new, open-box, returned, refurbished, used, or previously activated. The condition and activation history affect how to interpret the seller’s description and any warranty or return promise.

Compare the exact model’s supported network bands with the requirements of the carrier and country where you plan to use it. But a matching band list is not enough: OnePlus warns on its U.S. specifications page that “Even if a device supports some or all of the required frequencies for this carrier, it will not be able to connect unless the device is approved for this network.”
Before paying, give the carrier the exact model identifier and ask whether it will approve and activate that device on your intended plan. This is especially important for imported phones and carrier-branded variants. Check the carrier’s current compatibility information as well; do not assume that a phone will be accepted just because its listed bands appear to match.
3. Check the IMEI—and understand what the result means
Ask the seller for the IMEI through a private channel, then use OnePlus’s official authenticity and warranty inquiry. Avoid posting the IMEI publicly. Compare the inquiry’s activation information with the seller’s account of the phone’s history.
OnePlus says the information returned by the inquiry is “only used as a reference for determining the authenticity of the product.” The page says an official service center can inspect the full product set and that final warranty status depends on inspection and verification. The displayed activation date generally refers to the first time the product connected to the internet for use; OnePlus describes it as one reference for determining the warranty start, not a final warranty ruling.

If the result is missing, inconsistent with the listing, or unclear, ask OnePlus or an official service center to clarify before buying. Treat the inquiry as a screening step, not conclusive proof of authenticity, condition, or remaining warranty.
4. Establish who will provide warranty service
Check whether the seller appears in OnePlus’s global retailer locator for the relevant market. OnePlus describes the listed retailers as selected retailers and says warranty coverage is provided by the local distributor. If the seller is not listed, ask in writing who will handle a repair claim and which warranty terms apply to this exact phone and country.
Do not assume an imported phone or marketplace purchase receives the same warranty as a phone bought directly from a local OnePlus store. The OnePlus U.S. Terms of Sale limit after-sales service to official sales regions and set original-country or region and original-purchaser conditions for the stated limited warranty. Those are U.S. terms, not a universal warranty policy; check the terms for your country and the seller’s written commitment.

Before checkout, find out the return request deadline, how to start a return, who pays shipping, what condition and packaging are required, whether inspection or restocking terms apply, and how a refund is issued. Save a copy of the listing and the policy in force when you buy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor qualifying device purchases from OnePlus.com in the United States, the current U.S. terms describe a 15-calendar-day period to contact support and request a return, subject to an RMA process and inspection conditions. That policy does not establish the return window for an independent marketplace seller, another sales channel, or another country.
6. Compare listings on the same terms
When deciding between two offers, compare the details that change the risk and the real cost—not just the model name or headline price.
- Model and region: Confirm the precise model identifier and regional version.
- Network fit: Check the supported bands and confirm carrier approval for the exact model.
- Seller: Identify the actual seller, not just the marketplace hosting the listing, and check whether it appears in OnePlus’s locator.
- Condition and activation: Determine whether the phone is new, open-box, refurbished, used, or previously activated; compare the IMEI inquiry with the description.
- Warranty and returns: Confirm who honors each promise, the applicable terms, and the return process.
- Total cost: Include shipping and any import charges when comparing prices.
7. Keep evidence of the transaction
Save the listing, invoice, seller messages, and the phone’s serial number and IMEI details. OnePlus’s U.S. terms identify proof of purchase as relevant to a return request. Keeping these records also makes it easier to show what condition, warranty, and return terms the seller represented when you bought.
