Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore you pay, confirm four things: the phone is the exact model and edition advertised, it is not locked to someone else’s account or carrier, it works properly, and you have a way to get your money back if the seller misrepresented it. “Limited edition” is only a seller’s claim until the model and identifiers back it up. This guide gives you an order to check things in, whether you meet the seller or buy remotely. Apple’s detailed instructions cover iPhones, Brazil’s regulator Anatel covers IMEI and certification, and the U.S. FTC covers marketplace buying, so each is scoped below.
Confirm it is the exact handset advertised
Match the model, storage, color, edition markings, serial number or IMEI, and listing details. If a box is included, compare the identifiers printed on it with those shown on the phone. Brazil’s regulator Anatel specifically advises matching the on-screen IMEI with the box and checking for restrictions and certification (Anatel, “Antes de comprar”). Dual-SIM phones can have more than one IMEI, so check each one.

If the identifiers disagree, pause the deal and get a credible explanation. An IMEI check shows restrictions; it does not prove the phone is genuine, undamaged, or fully functional. Also note that no authenticity markers for any specific edition are covered here. Check the manufacturer’s own information for the edition you are considering.
Before meeting or paying
- Ask for current photos of the actual phone: screen on, back, edges, ports, edition marks, the Settings “About” screen, and any box or receipt. The FTC notes that stock photos do not let you assess the actual item (FTC, Buying From an Online Marketplace).
- Get written answers on exact model and region, storage, edition, carrier-lock status, repair history, battery condition, included items, and known faults. Keep the listing and messages.
- Check the IMEI or serial through the official service in the relevant country.
- Confirm network fit. Check the handset’s supported bands against your carrier. A limited edition sold in another market may not work well locally, and Anatel warns Brazilian buyers about compatibility, certification and contractual restrictions on phones bought abroad.
- Read the return and dispute rules: deadlines, fees, eligible reasons. Be wary of paying outside the platform’s protections.
In-person inspection, before you hand over money
- Remove the case and inspect in good light. Look at the screen, frame, back, camera lenses, buttons and connectors for cracks, dents, lifting, corrosion, debris, uneven gaps or signs of opening. Apple specifically calls out screen scratches, side and back damage, and connector damage or debris (Apple Support).
- Power it on and charge it. Apple says not to buy an iPhone that will not charge.
- Have the seller remove owner locks. They should sign out of their account, then you complete setup and reach the normal home screen. Apple’s wording: “Don’t buy an iPhone if Activation Lock is enabled.” If you see “iPhone Locked to Owner,” the seller must remove the lock first.
- Test function. Use your own SIM if feasible for calls or data, then test cameras, touch across the whole display, speakers, microphone, buttons, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, charging and biometrics. Apple supports testing the phone generally; the specific list here is practical guidance, not an Apple checklist.
- Review battery and repair data where the model shows it (see below), and record what the screen says.
- Compare identifiers on the device, listing and box one last time.
Battery and repair history
On supported iPhones, check Battery Health and Parts and Service History. Apple explains that battery-health information may not be available for unknown or non-genuine batteries, and that an “Unknown” part status can mean a non-genuine, previously used, incompletely installed or malfunctioning part. A missing reading is therefore not proof of a healthy battery. There is no single battery-health cutoff that suits every brand or model, so for other manufacturers use their current instructions for diagnostics, repair history and battery checks.

Buying online
- Choose a seller with an identifiable record and a clear return policy; know the return period, accepted reasons, and who pays shipping.
- Require actual-item photos and a written description. The FTC warns that a very low price on an expensive item can be a warning sign, and advises checking terms and using safer payment methods. That guidance is U.S.-specific; rights differ elsewhere.
- On delivery, inspect promptly and film the unboxing. Apple similarly advises inspecting an online-bought iPhone on receipt and returning it if it is not as expected. If it differs from the listing, use the platform’s process within the deadline.

Limits of this advice
Apple’s steps apply to iPhones. Anatel’s IMEI, certification and import advice applies to Brazil, and a clean IMEI result does not rule out defects. Other countries have different databases, certification rules and remedies. Anatel also publishes guidance on what to do if a problem arises (Anatel, “O Que Fazer”).
