Before buying a laptop for local AI development, identify the models, context lengths, and software you plan to run, then check whether the laptop’s memory and supported acceleration path can handle that full workload. A model’s parameter count—or an “AI PC” label—does not establish fit by itself.
Start with the workload, not the laptop label
Write down the models you want to run, the context lengths you expect to use, and the runtimes and development tools in your workflow. Then check the memory those combinations require and whether the software can use the laptop’s processor or GPU. A model’s weights are only part of the memory demand: context and runtime allocations also take space.

- Model: Identify the specific model and, where applicable, the quantization or variant you intend to use.
- Context length: Check the maximum context you need, not just a model’s smallest or default setting.
- Runtime and framework: Confirm support for your operating system, accelerator backend, model format, and development tools.
- Work pattern: Consider whether you will run inference, coding agents, or other workloads, and whether you need to keep other applications open at the same time.
Leave room for runtime use rather than treating a published memory example as an exact system requirement. Requirements can change with model, context, software version, and hardware.
How much VRAM do you need to run local models?
There is no single VRAM number that works as a universal minimum. Size memory for the specific model and context, and account for the rest of the runtime’s allocations. Ollama’s January 23, 2026 coding-tool guidance recommends at least 64,000 tokens of context and gives glm-4.7-flash as an example needing about 23 GB of VRAM at that context. That is a model-and-context example, not a general laptop specification.

Context can materially change the calculation. In a September 23, 2025 Ollama scheduler example, Gemma 3 12B at 128k context used 21.4 GiB of VRAM with the newer scheduler. Treat that as a result for the described model and software conditions, not a promise for other machines or runtimes.
These examples are not directly comparable: they involve different models, context lengths, software conditions, and memory units. Use them to see why workload-specific sizing matters, then verify the requirements for your own setup.

Compare the main laptop paths
| Path | Memory to check | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Silicon laptop | Unified memory shared across the system and supported workloads. | Whether your tools support MLX or another suitable macOS path, and whether the selected memory configuration fits your model and context. |
| Discrete-GPU laptop | Dedicated GPU VRAM, plus system RAM for the rest of the workload. | The exact GPU and VRAM configuration, the runtime’s support for that GPU, and whether the model and context fit. |
| AMD or Intel graphics | Exact GPU memory and system memory available on the chosen configuration. | Support for the precise hardware, operating system, runtime version, framework, and model—not just general claims of GPU acceleration. |
Apple Silicon and unified memory
Apple Silicon uses unified memory rather than the dedicated-GPU-VRAM arrangement common in discrete-GPU laptops. Ollama’s March 30, 2026 MLX preview describes its Apple Silicon path in those terms and recommends a Mac with more than 32 GB of unified memory for the specific Qwen3.5 35B-A3B coding workflow in that article. Apply that figure only to that use case; it is not a minimum for all local AI development.
Discrete-GPU laptops
For a GPU-based workflow, check the exact GPU model and its dedicated VRAM rather than relying on a product tier or “AI” branding. Confirm that your chosen runtime supports the GPU and that the model plus the intended context fit, with headroom for other allocations. The examples above show why a GPU name alone cannot answer how much memory a workload needs.

AMD and Intel graphics
Ollama’s June 5, 2026 release article says Vulkan support broadens GPU acceleration to AMD and Intel devices. This establishes an Ollama acceleration path, not equivalent performance or feature coverage across frameworks, models, operating systems, and tools. Verify the exact combination you plan to use before choosing a laptop.
Check compatibility before paying for hardware
Acceleration support belongs to a specific software-and-hardware combination. A runtime supporting one backend does not prove that another framework, model, operating system, or development tool can use it in the same way. Check official documentation for the intended software and confirm its support for the laptop’s exact GPU or unified-memory platform.

Check the practical laptop details separately
Once memory fit and software compatibility are established, compare the exact laptop configurations for the practical constraints of your work. These vary by product and cannot be inferred from an accelerator label.

- Sustained workload: Look for product-specific evidence relevant to extended runs; a short burst capability does not establish sustained behavior.
- Portability: Assess the size and weight against how often you will carry the laptop.
- Battery life and noise: Seek evidence for the exact configuration and workload rather than assuming either from the brand or GPU class.
- Storage and upgradeability: Check manufacturer documentation for the specific configuration. Do not assume memory, storage, or other components can be upgraded.
The cited Ollama examples do not establish current laptop prices, battery-life or thermal rankings, upgradeability, SSD thresholds, or comparative performance for named laptop models. A product-specific recommendation needs evidence for those claims.
Quick Recap
