Before buying a Google Nest speaker or smart display, check that you want a speaker or a screen, that your phone and Wi-Fi can set it up, and that its physical privacy controls and smart-home compatibility fit your needs. Google’s current catalog includes Nest Audio and Nest Mini speakers, Nest Hub displays and Nest Hub Max, plus Google Home Speaker (2026); the catalog identifies product families but does not establish which sounds best or offers the best value. Google’s connected-home device catalog is a useful starting point.
Choose a speaker or a display based on how you will use it
Choose a speaker for voice and audio
A speaker-only model may suit a room where you mainly want voice assistance, music or room-to-room audio. Google lists Nest Audio and Nest Mini as speaker families. The catalog does not compare their sound quality, so use other reliable model-specific evidence if audio performance is decisive.

Choose a display when the screen matters
A Nest Hub or Nest Hub Max adds a screen and display-specific features. That can matter when you want visual responses or features tied to a particular display. Do not assume all displays have the same camera, sensors or privacy implications: those vary by model and settings.

If synchronized audio across rooms is important, Google supports speaker groups that can combine compatible speakers and displays. You create a group in the Google Home app on a phone or tablet; check that the exact model you are considering is compatible before buying. Google’s speaker group guidance lists the relevant setup details.

Confirm you can set it up where you plan to use it
Google Home setup requires a Google Account, home Wi-Fi and a supported phone or tablet. Google’s listed minimum operating systems are Android 9.0 or later and iOS 17.0 or later. Setup and the Google Home app are not available on a computer. Check Google’s current app requirements against the device you will use.
- Check the room’s Wi-Fi: Google recommends confirming the signal where the speaker or display will sit. For setup on a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection, the phone or tablet also needs to support 5 GHz. See Google’s setup troubleshooting guidance.
- Check power access: The device needs a power source to operate. Make sure the planned location has a suitable outlet and that the required power supply is included or available.
- Decide which home and account will manage it: If several people share the home, settle which Google Account and Google Home setup will own and manage the device before installation.
For a secondhand unit, ask the seller to confirm it can be set up and is no longer tied to their account. Also verify the power supply and any accessories you expect are included. Condition, resale pricing and seller terms depend on the listing.

Check the physical microphone switch and display features
Microphone mute is a hardware control
Google documents a physical microphone switch, and says the setting cannot be changed in the app. Its location differs by model: Nest Audio’s switch is on the back near the power cord, Nest Mini’s is on the side, and Nest display switches are on the back. If a hardware mute is important to you, check the exact model’s control and placement before choosing it. Google’s microphone instructions provide the model-specific details.

Displays can have optional personalization, camera and sensing features
Google’s privacy information describes optional Voice Match and Face Match for Nest Hub setup, optional Nest Cam use on Nest Hub Max, and Sleep Sensing on Nest Hub (2nd gen). Display sensor data and audio or video handling depend on configuration and which features you use. Review Google’s privacy information for the exact model and decide which optional features you want to enable.

Verify compatibility with the smart-home devices you already own
Do not treat a Matter Hub list as a complete compatibility guarantee
Google’s Matter community post identifies original Google Home, Google Mini, Nest Mini, Nest Hub (1st and 2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Nest Audio and Nest Wifi as Matter Hubs. Because compatibility requirements can change, verify the current status for the exact model in Google’s documentation and with the accessory maker before purchase. Google’s Matter post is a reference, not a substitute for checking current requirements.
Check whether Google Home exposes the controls you need
Matter-enabled devices can be set up with Google Home or through a third-party maker’s app. A “Works with Google Home” badge signals compatibility, but Google warns that some third-party products may show status in Home without offering controls there. Confirm that the specific functions you need are supported and whether you will still need the manufacturer’s app. Google’s third-party device setup guidance explains these distinctions.

Check support and seller terms before paying
For an older or used model, check Google’s current support list and firmware notes. Google says speaker and display updates are staged; the production versions on its page are versions available to all devices. The release notes include 2026 fixes and security updates, but they do not establish how long a particular model will receive future support. See Google’s firmware versions and release notes.
