Check both displays, the inner screen layer, hinge movement, signs of liquid or particle exposure, and the seller’s return and repair terms. Samsung’s 2019 Galaxy Fold is a useful example, but its dimensions and protections are specific to that model; later foldables’ features do not apply to it.
What should I check before buying a first-generation foldable phone?
Use this checklist in person where possible. Ask the seller to demonstrate the phone rather than relying on photos or a general claim that it “works.”
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Confirm the exact model and variant. Check the model number, region and carrier compatibility against the network and service options you need. A listing that says only “Galaxy Fold” may not provide enough information.
- Inspect the inner display in bright light. Examine the crease, edges and area near the hinge for cracks, bulges, dents, lifting screen layer, discoloration or dead pixels. Test touch input across the whole panel, including the crease and edges.
- Open and close it gently. Ask the seller to demonstrate smooth hinge movement without forcing it. Listen and watch for catching, uneven movement or visible gaps. Condition matters more than a claimed fold count.
- Test the cover display and everyday functions. Try the keyboard, camera, calls, video and the apps you expect to use. Open an app on one display and see how it behaves when you unfold the phone.
- Ask about exposure and repairs. Ask whether the phone has encountered liquids, sand, grit or other particles, and whether it has been repaired. Request service records if available. Look for signs of liquid damage or particles around the hinge and screen.
- Check the screen layer. Confirm that the original inner-screen layer is present and ask who handled any replacement if it is missing or damaged. Do not peel it off yourself.
- Verify the purchase terms before paying. Get the return window, warranty status and transferability, repair estimate, parts availability, and manufacturer or service-provider software and security support for the exact device and your market in writing where possible.
Is the crease or screen damage normal?
A visible crease is part of the foldable display design; it is not, by itself, proof of damage. A bulge, crack, lifting layer, unusual discoloration, dead pixels or a touch area that does not respond deserves closer scrutiny. Ask the seller to show the panel both open and closed, and inspect it under bright light rather than judging only from a powered-off screen.

Can dust damage the hinge?
Particles can scratch or dent a foldable’s screen and may affect hinge performance, according to Samsung’s handling guidance. Keep grit and sharp objects away from the inner display and hinge, and check that nothing is trapped between the two halves before folding. Ask about previous exposure to sand or debris, and inspect the hinge area for visible particles or damage. Samsung’s foldable-device precautions
Can I remove the inner screen protector?
No. Samsung advises users not to remove the inner-screen layer and directs them to an authorized service center if it needs replacement. Samsung Support US says damage caused by removal by the user or an unauthorized service provider is not covered by its US standard limited warranty. Warranty terms vary by market, so check the terms that apply to the exact phone and country. Samsung Support US: Care for your Samsung foldable phone

What the original Galaxy Fold tells you about size and usability
Samsung announced the original Galaxy Fold in 2019 with a 7.3-inch inner display and a 4.6-inch cover display. Samsung’s 2024 retrospective lists its weight as 276 g and its folded thickness as 15.7–17.1 mm. Those model-specific figures point to a substantial handling trade-off: try both screens and the closed phone in your hand before deciding whether its size suits your routine. Check app behavior, not just screen hardware
The 2019 launch described App Continuity and simultaneous multi-window use as intended features. Treat them as prompts for hands-on testing: open the apps you rely on, switch between the cover and inner displays, try the keyboard and check whether controls remain easy to use. Samsung’s developer guidance notes that apps need to handle varied screen sizes and that interactive controls should not be placed near the crease. A feature described at launch does not guarantee that every app works well on the phone today. Samsung Developer’s foldable-design guidance

Does the original Galaxy Fold have water resistance?
Do not assume it does. Samsung’s current US guidance says earlier foldables are not water resistant, and Samsung’s product history identifies the Z Fold3, released in 2021, as the first water-resistant Z Fold generation. A later model’s water-resistance rating cannot be applied to the original 2019 Galaxy Fold. For any other first-generation phone, check the exact model’s own specifications rather than inferring protection from newer devices. In March 2019, Samsung Newsroom India described a laboratory folding test with a target of 200,000 folds and unfolds, comparing that figure with around five years at 100 folds per day. It is Samsung’s description of its test—not an independently verified lifespan, a guarantee for a used phone or a way to estimate the condition of one particular hinge. What to verify for a used foldable in your market
Availability, repair costs, parts, warranty transferability and software or security support can differ by model, region and service provider. The phone’s age alone does not settle these questions. Before purchase, check with the manufacturer or an authorized service provider using the exact model number, and compare the seller’s return terms with the repair options available to you. If the inner display or hinge has a problem, establish a repair quote and parts availability before treating the listing as a bargain.
