Before buying a dual-screen retro handheld, decide whether you need it for Nintendo DS games or for both DS and 3DS games. Two screens and a clamshell case do not prove that a device can run 3DS titles. Then check screen layout and touch, emulator setup, controls, portability, hinge and warranty, and model-specific battery evidence.
Start with the games you want to play
DS and 3DS are separate performance requirements. Specialist comparisons describe some budget dual-screen handhelds as suitable for DS but not powerful enough for 3DS, while identifying stronger hardware as important for 3DS use. Those are comparison-source judgments, not results from independent testing; check evidence for the exact model and games you care about.

For example, current specialist comparisons present the AYN Thor and AYANEO Pocket DS as stronger DS-and-3DS options, and the ANBERNIC RG DS as a lower-cost, DS-oriented option that does not meet one comparison’s 3DS criterion. Treat these as starting points, not guarantees: hardware revisions, software, firmware, availability, and prices can change.

Check both displays, touch, and emulator setup
Confirm that both panels are usable, then compare their sizes and aspect ratios with the games you intend to play. Also verify that the lower panel accepts touch; a second display alone does not establish touchscreen support. Find out what kind of touchscreen it uses
Modern dual-screen handhelds may use capacitive touch, which behaves differently from the resistive touchscreens of original DS and 3DS systems. A stylus designed for an original resistive screen may not work correctly on a capacitive panel. Check how the emulator maps the screens
On Android handhelds, the operating system may treat one panel as primary and the other as an external display. The emulator may need its screen assignment configured to match the device. Before buying, look for setup instructions for the specific handheld and emulator, and consider how much configuration you are willing to do. A manufacturer’s specifications tell you what the device is advertised to include; they do not establish game compatibility, comfort, durability, or runtime. AYANEO’s August 18, 2025 announcement describes the Pocket DS as an Android clamshell with a 7-inch 1080p 165Hz OLED main display, a 5-inch 4:3 LCD secondary display, a Snapdragon G3x Gen 2, and an 8,000mAh battery. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. Check the current configuration, availability, and price before relying on them: AYANEO Pocket DS announcement.

Use a buying checklist that reflects how you will use the handheld:
- Game library: Confirm support for the specific DS or 3DS games you want.
- Display layout: Check panel size, aspect ratio, visibility, and whether both screens are usable.
- Touch and stylus: Confirm touch support and compatibility with any stylus you plan to use.
- Emulator setup: Find out how the operating system and emulator assign the two screens, and whether setup is straightforward enough for you.
- Controls: Check button placement, grip, and whether the layout suits your hands and the games you play.
- Portability: Compare closed dimensions and weight against your bag, pocket, and travel needs.
- Durability: Inspect hinge construction and look for credible long-term ownership reports; also read the warranty and return terms.
- Battery: Prefer runtime reports for the exact model and workload.
- Total cost: Account for shipping, storage, accessories, warranty, and regional or retailer differences.
Assess hinge and battery evidence carefully
A clamshell hinge is a mechanical part that will be opened and closed repeatedly. Check its construction, warranty coverage, return period, and credible long-term ownership reporting. The available comparisons recommend considering hinge or slider durability, but do not establish comparative failure rates for current models. Do not treat a general impression or one owner’s report as a failure-rate statistic.

Battery capacity in milliamp-hours is not a playtime estimate. AYANEO lists an 8,000mAh battery for the Pocket DS, but the cited announcement does not give a directly comparable runtime figure. Look for runtime reports from the specific model under a workload similar to yours rather than converting capacity into assumed hours.

For context only, Nintendo’s 2014 comparison lists approximate battery life for its original hardware. The original 3DS is listed at 3.5–5.5 hours for 3DS games and 5–9 hours for DS games; the 3DS XL at 3–5 hours and 5–8 hours, respectively; and the New 3DS XL at 3.5–6.5 hours and 6–10 hours, respectively. Make the decision around your priorities
For DS games alone, a less powerful or lower-cost dual-screen option may be sufficient if it handles your chosen titles and offers a screen layout and controls you like. If 3DS games are essential, make model-specific performance evidence a deciding requirement rather than assuming that DS capability carries over. In either case, weigh ease of setup, screen and touch behavior, portability, warranty, battery evidence, and total cost against the games you will actually play.
Specialist comparisons are useful for narrowing candidates, but they are not a substitute for current model listings or direct evidence about your target games. Verify the hardware revision, software and firmware support, retailer availability, and warranty terms for the exact unit you are considering.
