Get the seller’s promises and refund terms in writing. A key that activates is not, by itself, proof that the license was properly transferred or that you are entitled to keep using it.
What does “lifetime” mean for a software license?
“Lifetime” is a marketing label, not a complete description of the rights you are buying. The written terms should say whether it means you may use one specific version indefinitely, receive upgrades to future versions, get updates for a defined period, or receive support or cloud services for a stated term. Ask the seller to define the word in writing and identify which publisher terms govern the offer.

For example, Microsoft’s license terms say Microsoft is not obligated to provide support under that agreement, and that updates may not include or support every feature or peripheral. How can you check whether the seller and license are legitimate?
Start by identifying the legal seller and the source of the entitlement—not just the website or marketplace where the listing appears. Ask whether the seller is authorized to sell that exact edition in your country, and whether the license is retail, OEM, volume, education, refurbished, or another category. These categories can have different terms and transfer rules.

- Look for the seller’s legal business name, contact details, invoice process, refund policy, and support contact.
- Check the publisher’s official store or reseller directory, if one exists, and ask the publisher how the entitlement should appear in your account or be registered.
- Save the dated listing, invoice, seller messages, and any written explanation of what “lifetime” covers.
Microsoft recommends purchasing Windows from Microsoft or a trusted store and identifies online auction purchases among contexts in which counterfeit software may fail validation. Authorization is program- and publisher-specific. For example, Microsoft’s Cloud Solution Provider documentation says an indirect reseller must be authorized in Partner Center before transacting through a distributor. What should you confirm about users, devices, and transfers?
Match the license to how you plan to use the software: the number of people and devices, operating system, personal or business use, and country. Ask whether it is tied to one computer, an account, or both; whether reinstalling or replacing hardware is allowed; and whether a transfer to another person requires publisher approval or a formal process.
These conditions vary even within one publisher’s products. Microsoft says an Office one-time purchase installs on one PC or Mac and explains version-specific limits on moving Office 2024 or Office 2021 to another computer. Its support process for transfers to another person in the European Economic Area (EEA) asks Microsoft to verify rights and reassign the entitlement. Adobe’s policy provides another example of product-specific rules: educational Adobe-branded products are ineligible for transfer, OEM versions generally cannot be transferred except in Germany, and attached support contracts do not transfer. The policy requires both the transferor and recipient to submit a Transfer of License form and says processing can take three to four weeks. Does activation prove that the license is valid?
No. Activation is a technical check, not a complete ruling on whether the seller had the right to transfer the license or whether the advertised terms apply to you. Microsoft describes Windows activation as checking whether software is being used only on PCs allowed by its terms, and notes that validation can fail for counterfeit software. Before paying, ask where the installer comes from, how activation works, whether the license will appear in a publisher account, and what happens after a hardware change or loss of account access. Also check whether continued access depends on internet access, region, account status, or periodic license refreshes. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules describe restrictions and access conditions for the services covered by those terms, including limits on transfer or resale except where permitted. Ask the seller to separate each promise: security updates, bug fixes, feature updates, major-version upgrades, technical support, and cloud services. “Lifetime updates” can be ambiguous unless the terms define the duration, covered version, and what happens if the publisher ends a service. Likewise, a license to run installed software does not necessarily include ongoing support or access to online features.

Compare the seller’s written promise with the publisher’s license terms for the exact product and region. If the seller promises more than the publisher terms appear to grant, ask who is responsible for honoring that promise and what remedy is available if it is not fulfilled.
What should you check about refunds and seller remedies?
Find out who handles a rejected key, revoked entitlement, or failed activation: the seller or the publisher. Read the refund window and conditions before purchase, and keep copies of the policy and all communications. A publisher’s license terms and your rights against the seller are separate questions; Microsoft’s terms acknowledge that buyers may have rights against the seller and under local law, with the result depending on jurisdiction and transaction facts. If the offer turns out to be a subscription or recurring service rather than a one-time license, check renewal, cancellation, and early-termination terms before paying. In June 2024, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission announced allegations in a pending case concerning Adobe subscription disclosures and cancellation obstacles. How should you compare two discounted lifetime offers?
Compare the actual license terms rather than the headline discount. Use the same expected period of use for both offers, and check each of these points before deciding:
- Total cost over the period you expect to use the software.
- Exact product, edition, and version, plus any future-upgrade rights.
- Update, support, and cloud-service coverage.
- Permitted users and devices, and whether personal or business use is allowed.
- Transfer, reinstallation, and hardware-change rules.
- Account, internet, region, or recurring validation requirements.
- Seller authorization and the publisher’s process for confirming the entitlement.
- Refund terms and who resolves activation or entitlement problems.
If a seller will not identify the license type, explain how the publisher recognizes the entitlement, or put the promised duration and scope in writing, you cannot reliably compare the offer with another license.
