Start with the complete price and box contents
Check the exact model number, configuration and regional listing—not just the headline price. Confirm whether the keyboard, pen and charger are included, and whether any business-only options change the price. Bundles and prices can vary by retailer, market and date.

For example, Microsoft’s September 23, 2026 announcement says the Slim Pen and Surface Keyboard for its newer 12-inch Surface Pro are sold separately. Microsoft announced select-market availability beginning October 13, 2026, so on October 7 that model should be treated as announced, not broadly available. Its stated $1,149.99 MSRP is Microsoft’s figure, not a guarantee of local retail pricing or availability. Microsoft’s announcement has the launch details.
Do not treat the $799 starting price Microsoft stated in 2025 for the first-edition 12-inch Surface Pro as a current price; it was a launch price. The 2025 model’s product page describes a detachable keyboard and pen, but the exact contents of a particular retailer’s SKU still need checking. Microsoft’s 2025 product page describes that model.

Will the processor run your apps and devices?
Identify whether the configuration uses an ARM processor, such as Snapdragon, or Intel, then check your actual software and peripherals against that platform. Surface Pro 11th Edition has Snapdragon X Plus and X Elite configurations for consumer devices and Intel Core Ultra options for business. Microsoft explains Windows on ARM in its Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ, but the app publisher is the right source for confirmation about a particular app; also check drivers, printers, scanners, security tools and workplace management requirements.
Make a short list of software and accessories you cannot do without, and verify support for the exact processor platform before paying. Do not assume that software which works on one Windows PC will behave identically on another platform.
How much memory and storage do you need?
Choose RAM and storage for your workload rather than relying on a model family’s starting configuration. Consider how many applications and browser tabs you use together, whether you work with large files, and how much data must stay on the device. Check whether memory is configurable at purchase and whether storage can be replaced later.

Microsoft’s repair information lists a removable SSD for Surface Pro 11th Edition and the first-edition 12-inch Surface Pro. That does not mean every component is user-upgradeable, or that a replacement part will be available in every market. Microsoft also says Copilot+ features are limited to select configurations with at least 16 GB of RAM and can have other system requirements; check the feature and configuration details before buying for that reason. Is the keyboard practical as your main computer?
If you expect to type for hours, try the keyboard and touchpad if possible. Check key spacing and layout, backlighting, touchpad response, the stand’s range of angles and how stable the setup feels where you normally work. A detachable screen often uses a kickstand when separated from its keyboard, so consider both tablet use and the setup you will use for long typing sessions.
Also check how the pen attaches, stores and charges, if you plan to use one. Microsoft describes the 2025 12-inch Surface Pro keyboard as full-size and backlit, with magnetic pen storage. A 360-degree convertible keeps its keyboard attached as the screen folds around; a detachable lets you remove the screen and use it separately. If you mostly type, compare the attached-keyboard arrangement with a detachable in person. If you regularly read, write by hand or carry the tablet alone, the detachable arrangement may better match that use. Neither design is universally better.
Match the screen, ports and connectivity to your routine
Compare screen size, resolution, brightness, aspect ratio, touch and pen support, physical ports, Wi-Fi and any mobile-broadband option. Think through the devices you connect—such as an external display, storage drive, camera or wired network—and count the ports you need at the same time. If you rely on mobile data, verify that the exact regional configuration includes it rather than assuming it is standard.
Microsoft’s September 2026 announcement describes a 500-nit PixelSense touchscreen and an optional 5G configuration for business on the newer 12-inch Surface Pro. Those are manufacturer-stated details for that announced model; confirm the local SKU and availability before relying on them. The announcement gives the stated specifications.

How long will the battery actually last?
Look for battery tests that resemble your use and compare results only when the test methods are similar. Web browsing at reduced screen brightness, video playback and demanding work can produce different outcomes. Microsoft cautions that battery life varies with configuration, usage, network and feature settings, signal strength and other factors.
For its 2026 Surface Pro web-browsing claim, Microsoft describes a preproduction device with 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, browsing twelve popular websites over Wi-Fi at 150-nit brightness. That test result is not a promise of runtime for another configuration or your workload. Check the method in Microsoft’s announcement, and use independent reviews when available to judge real-world endurance.
Can you get it repaired and supported where you live?
Before purchase, check the model-specific service guide, warranty terms and repair service in your country. Look for information about replacement parts you may care about, including the battery, display, kickstand and storage. Microsoft lists battery, display module, kickstand, motherboard and removable SSD among the parts for Surface Pro 11th Edition; the first-edition 12-inch model’s list includes battery and display module. For used or refurbished laptops, verify Windows 11 eligibility for the exact device and account for remaining security support. Microsoft says free Windows 10 updates, technical assistance and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025, and identifies some older Surface devices that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements. Use a shortlist that compares the whole setup
When comparing specific devices, record the same information for each option. A lower tablet price can be misleading if it excludes accessories you need, while a favorable battery number may come from a test unlike your daily use.
