Before buying a DeFi token, find out what rights it gives you, how its code and supply work, who can control it, whether you could trade it when needed, and what the project can substantiate about itself. A token’s label, quoted price, audit, or promotion does not answer those questions by itself. This checklist can help you assess what is knowable; it cannot guarantee a token is safe or suitable for you.
1. What rights does the token actually give you?
Start with the token’s documented rights, not its name or marketing category. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), in Customer Advisory: Use Caution When Buying Digital Coins or Tokens, advises prospective buyers to understand the rights attached to a token and how it connects to the offered product or service.

- Does holding it provide access to a product or service, a way to pay, participation in governance, or some combination?
- Can you redeem it for anything, and if so, what are the conditions and who is responsible for honoring them?
- Does ownership confer a claim on revenue, assets, or repayment, or does the project explicitly say it does not?
- Is the stated use available now, or does it depend on future development or decisions by the project?
Look for clear, consistent answers in the project’s disclosures and governing documents. If the materials describe benefits without specifying what a holder can claim or do, treat that uncertainty as a diligence finding, not as a promise.

2. Can you inspect the code and security review?
Check whether the relevant blockchain and token code are public, then determine whether an independent cybersecurity review covers the contracts that are actually deployed. The CFTC’s advisory recommends checking whether a blockchain is open and public; the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has also identified code availability and independent cybersecurity audits as disclosure topics.

- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
- Confirm which contracts the project says are in scope; a review of one component does not establish that every related contract was reviewed.
- Check the review’s date and the version or deployment it covers. A report on earlier code may not describe the code currently in use.
- Look for disclosed findings and whether the project reports how they were addressed. Do not assume an audit means every issue was found or fixed.
An audit is evidence that a review took place, not proof that a contract cannot be exploited, misused, or affected by later changes.
3. How can token supply and allocations change?
A headline maximum-supply figure is only one part of token economics. The SEC Commissioner response on crypto-asset disclosure identifies supply and distribution information—including insider holdings, issuance, and lockups or vesting—as relevant disclosures. Examine these together:
- Supply: What are the total and circulating supplies, and how are those figures defined?
- Issuance and destruction: Can new tokens be minted or existing tokens burned? What rules or permissions govern those actions?
- Allocation: How much is held by founders, insiders, investors, or other identified groups, and is that information disclosed?
- Unlocks: What are the vesting, lockup, and distribution schedules, and when can previously restricted tokens enter circulation?
Check whether the project discloses who can change supply rules as well as what the published schedule says. If circulating supply, insider allocation, or future unlocks cannot be verified, record that gap rather than treating a maximum-supply claim as a complete picture.

4. Who controls the contract and governance?
Ask the literal question: Who controls the contract? Identify the people, entities, or governance process with authority to administer or upgrade the relevant contracts. Contract permissions are asset-specific, so a project’s general description of decentralization is not a substitute for checking the permissions of the deployed contracts.
- Which actors can upgrade, pause, or administer contracts, or change important settings?
- How are proposals made and decided, and what participation or approval is required?
- Can token holders meaningfully affect decisions, or do disclosed controls leave important powers elsewhere?
- Do insider holdings appear consistent with the project’s claims about how governance works?
The SEC Commissioner response identifies governance procedures and insider holdings as disclosure topics. Compare those disclosures with the actual control arrangements; a voting feature alone does not establish that holders have meaningful influence.
5. Could you trade the amount you intend to buy or sell?
Check where the token trades and whether the available liquidity is deep enough for the size and timing of the transaction you have in mind. A displayed or quoted price is not proof that you can buy or sell at that price. In a thin market, a transaction may be difficult to complete at the expected price, and a later sale may be harder than an initial purchase.

The CFTC warns that new or thinly traded tokens can be vulnerable to pump-and-dump schemes. Treat sudden promotion or price movement as a reason to examine trading conditions and claims carefully, not as evidence of lasting demand.

Research the named people, affiliates, and entities involved, and compare their claims with the project’s published disclosures. The CFTC advises prospective buyers to do due diligence on the people and entities behind an offering.
- Can you identify the parties responsible for the project and distinguish stated facts from promotional claims?
- Does the project explain how funds are used and what token holders receive?
- Can important claims about rights, supply, governance, or security be checked against documents or deployed-code information?
- Are you being urged to buy quickly because of hype, or promised a guaranteed return?
The CFTC cautions that there is no guaranteed investment or trading strategy. It also states: “Buying digital coins or tokens only because you expect to sell them at a higher price later is the definition of speculation and carries considerable risk, regardless of how good a white paper, application or business plan sounds.”

7. What legal context applies to you?
Do not assume a token’s legal treatment can be settled by its name or by a general online label. The SEC/CFTC interpretation published in March 2026 addresses certain assets and transactions; it does not establish a universal answer for every token or every transaction. Legal outcomes depend on the relevant facts and applicable jurisdiction.
The SEC’s December 11, 2017 statement by then-Chairman Jay Clayton put one limit plainly: “Merely calling a token a ‘utility’ token or structuring it to provide some utility does not prevent the token from being a security.” That dated statement is not a complete legal test. If classification matters to your decision, assess the token and transaction in the relevant jurisdiction rather than relying on the project’s chosen label.

8. Compare projects on evidence, not a single score
If you are comparing tokens, use the same questions for each project. This is a way to organize diligence, not an investment recommendation or a scoring model.
| Compare | Evidence to look for |
|---|---|
| Rights and use | What holders can actually do or claim, and how the token connects to a product or service. |
| Code and security | Whether code is public, which deployed contracts an independent review covers, and the review’s date and scope. |
| Supply and distribution | Total and circulating supply, issuance rules, allocations, insider holdings, and unlock schedules. |
| Control and governance | Contract administration and upgrade powers, decision procedures, and the practical influence of token holders. |
| Liquidity and venues | Where the token trades and whether liquidity appears adequate for the transaction you are considering. |
| Disclosures | Whether important claims about people, use of funds, token rights, and project operations are clear and verifiable. |
For each category, distinguish what you verified from what the project merely asserts. An important answer that is missing, unclear, or difficult to verify is itself useful information for your decision.
