Buy a headphone amplifier for the way it works with your headphones and source—not for the “Class A” label alone. First check whether your current device already plays cleanly at your preferred level. If you still need more headroom or a better system fit, compare sensitivity, impedance, output at the relevant load, output impedance, gain and connections.
Do you need a separate headphone amplifier?
Try your existing source first. If it reaches your normal listening level without unwanted distortion or forcing the volume control to its limit, a separate amp may add little practical value. Neumann notes that high-sensitivity, medium-impedance headphones are often adequately driven by audio interfaces and other devices (Neumann’s headphone-amplifier guidance). Sennheiser likewise recommends checking the specifications of the exact headphone and source (Sennheiser’s amplifier guidance).

A dedicated amp is worth considering when the source cannot provide the level you want cleanly, or when the amp’s specific inputs, outputs or preamp function solve a real need. “Class A” describes a design approach; the cited product pages do not show that the label by itself predicts a better match or audible improvement.
How to match an amp to your headphones
Read sensitivity and impedance together
Check both numbers in the headphone specifications. Impedance alone does not tell you how much power the headphone needs: sensitivity, amplifier output and impedance interact. Audeze explains these factors in its guidance on whether an amp can drive its headphones.

- CLASS A SOUND WITH A DUAL-TRANSISTOR DESIGN Built around a carefully tuned Class A amplification circuit, the CLASS A combines audio transistors and dual transistors with San ken audio transistors. The result is a smooth, warm presentation with rich vocals and relaxed bass, while maintaining fast response, strong dynamics, and precise control for demanding music such as rock and orchestral recordings.
- CUSTOM 60W TOROIDAL TRANSFORMER FOR CLEAN, STABLE POWER A custom 60W toroidal transformer is designed specifically for the high static-current characteristics of the Class A amplifier circuit. Its carefully engineered winding structure provides efficient, low-interference, stable power delivery, helping the amplifier maintain a clean background and consistent performance during demanding listening sessions.
- FULLY BALANCED CIRCUIT WITH UP TO 4000mW+4000mW OUTPUT The fully balanced differential amplifier architecture provides strong driving power, low distortion, and excellent resistance to interference. With up to 4000mW+4000mW of balanced output at 32 ohms, CLASS A can confidently drive a wide range of headphones, from sensitive in-ear monitors to demanding full-size headphones.
- 5-LEVEL GAIN AND INDEPENDENT BASS & TREBLE CONTROLS Choose from five gain levels—Low, Medium, High, Headphone, and Super Headphone—to better match different headphone sensitivities and impedance levels. Independent bass and treble controls offer ±10dB adjustment, allowing you to fine-tune the tonal balance to suit your headphones, music, and personal listening preference.
- EXTENSIVE INPUTS AND OUTPUTS FOR A COMPLETE HIFI SYSTEM Connect a wide range of source components through 3.5mm single-ended, RCA single-ended, 4.4mm balanced, or XLR balanced inputs. Three headphone outputs—6.35mm, 4.4mm, and 4-pin XLR—support popular headphone connections, while RCA and XLR outputs allow connection to power amplifiers or active speakers. Two-way 12V trigger IN/OUT enables synchronized power control with compatible HiFi equipment.
Impedance also affects what the amplifier must supply. Texas Instruments explains that a higher-impedance load needs more voltage for a given power, while delivering the same power into a lower-impedance load requires more current (Texas Instruments’ headphone-amplifier design guide). That is why neither a high impedance rating nor a large headline wattage, on its own, establishes compatibility.
Compare output at the headphone’s load
Look for the amplifier’s power or voltage specification at the headphone’s rated impedance, or a nearby load, and read the conditions attached to it. Note whether the figure is per channel or combined, whether it is for balanced or single-ended output, which gain setting applies, and the stated distortion threshold. If the manufacturer gives only a maximum wattage without a load and conditions, you cannot use that number alone to establish a reliable match.

Output impedance can affect the electrical match. Audeze Support’s rule of thumb is to aim for an amplifier output impedance around one eighth of the headphone’s rated impedance or less. It describes this as a practical guide, not an absolute compatibility law: “As long as the amp of choice has a low-ish output impedance (the rule of thumb is about 1/8 of the headphones’ rated impedance or less), it should be able to drive our headphones with a modicum of power.”

FiiO lists output impedance below 1.5Ω at 32Ω for the stated balanced-output condition (FiiO’s specification page). Compare the amplifier’s figure with your headphone’s impedance, and make sure you understand which output the figure applies to.
Check gain, controls and connections
Choose gain for usable volume control
Low gain can make it easier to use a sensitive headphone without the sound becoming too loud in the first part of the volume control’s range. Higher gain can help when the source level and headphone needs call for it. More gain is not automatically better; look for settings that suit your headphone and let you adjust volume comfortably. FiiO lists five gain levels for its CLASS A amp (FiiO specifications), while Rebel Audio lists three gain settings for the RebelAmp (RebelAmp manufacturer specifications).

Verify the whole connection chain
- Source to amp: Confirm the amplifier accepts the source’s output connection and signal type.
- Amp to headphones: Match the headphone plug and cable to an available output. Check balanced wiring and connector compatibility where relevant; connector shape alone does not establish that a cable is wired correctly.
- System role: Decide whether you need a headphone amp only, or also want a DAC or preamp function. Bryston describes the BHA-1 as offering balanced and single-ended headphone outputs plus preamp outputs (Bryston BHA-1 product information).
Do not buy a balanced cable just because an amplifier has a balanced output; buy one only if it is compatible with both the headphone and the specific amp output you intend to use. Balanced and single-ended connections are practical options to match, not evidence by themselves that one amp will sound better.

Manufacturer specifications can illustrate what to check, but they are not a ranking when the figures use different conditions. For instance, Rebel Audio lists the RebelAmp at approximately 0.95W RMS per channel into 32Ω and approximately 130mW RMS per channel into 300Ω, with 0.1Ω output impedance (RebelAmp specifications). FiiO’s cited figures use different conditions and output modes. Compare the exact load, output type, gain and distortion conditions before drawing conclusions.

- Class A and fully-balanced at an unheard of price The Gremlin Class A Tube Headphone Amplifier is a little monster with a ferocious bite. With 1250mW of output power, it has the muscle to drive most headphones that cross its path. It may be ugly, naked, and small, but don't judge a beast by its cover. For just $135, you're getting a Class A, fully-balanced headphone tube amplifier with matched tubes—something unheard of at this price. It delivers sound that’s sumptuous and lush, with musical tonality and heart-melting mids. Once it gets its claws in you, you won't want it to let go.
- Feeding the beast: Tubes + transistors The Gremlin is a hybrid headphone amp that combines the precision of transistors with the warmth of vacuum tubes. While solid-state amps (which rely solely on transistors) deliver accuracy, they lack the soul of tubes. In the Gremlin, the vacuum tubes in the pre-amp stage flood your music with rich harmonics and a warmth that solid-state amps can’t touch.
- A poised predator: a fully-balanced amplifier With a fully-balanced design featuring balanced XLR inputs and balanced 4-pin XLR / balanced 4.4mm outputs, the Gremlin cancels out the kind of hums, buzzes, and interference that can creep in with unbalanced systems. This means you get a cleaner sound—especially important if you're using sensitive headphones or high-end equipment that picks up every little detail. The Gremlin gives you the best of both worlds: the warm, rich tones of tube amplification with the minimal interference of balanced design.
- Matched Ray Tubes: the Gremlin’s natural weapon The Gremlin comes armed with a matched pair of CORE 12AU7 tubes from Ray Tubes to give you that signature tube warmth right out of the box. When tubes are matched, it means they’ve been carefully tested to ensure they work together as a pair, delivering the same output and frequency response. This results in better soundstage, clarity, and stereo imaging—key elements for an hi-fi listening experience.
- Embark on the quest for your perfect sound The Gremlin Amp is made for audio lovers who want to explore the world of sound. It works with any 12AU7 or 6922 tubes, new or old, allowing you to easily swap and try new types. Whether you prefer a lush or linear sound, the Gremlin lets you customize your audio setup whenever you want a change.
| What to compare | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Output at your headphone’s impedance | A headline maximum may not describe performance at your load. | Power or voltage, load, per-channel versus combined figure, output type, gain and distortion condition. |
| Output impedance | It is part of the electrical match with the headphone. | Use the figure for the output you will actually use; Audeze’s one-eighth guideline is a rule of thumb. |
| Gain and volume range | The right range can make everyday volume adjustment more practical. | Available gain settings and whether one suits your headphone and source. |
| Inputs and outputs | The amp must fit the source, headphone cable and any wider system role. | Connector types, balanced wiring, and whether DAC or preamp functionality is needed. |
| Ownership constraints | A technically suitable amp may still be inconvenient in your setup. | Dimensions, power supply, ventilation guidance, idle power, warranty, return terms and current listing price. |
FiiO describes five gain levels and a balanced output for its CLASS A model (FiiO product specifications). Bryston’s BHA-1 illustrates a different feature set, with balanced and single-ended headphone outputs and preamp outputs (Bryston product information). Those differences may matter to your system, but none establishes a universal winner. Make the comparison against your exact headphones and source; when a manufacturer omits the load or conditions needed for a fair comparison, treat the match as uncertain rather than extrapolating.
Account for space, power and heat
Before buying, check the unit’s dimensions, required power supply and any ventilation instructions, along with idle power, warranty, return terms and the current price on the actual listing. The cited product information does not establish a universal temperature or energy-use figure for Class A headphone amplifiers, so do not infer one for the whole category from a single model’s specifications.
