Before buying a 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, verify that your computer, laptop, motherboard, or console supports its M.2 NVMe interface, length, PCIe link, and physical clearance. Then compare the exact 2TB model’s rated performance, heatsink fit, write endurance, and warranty terms. A high sequential-speed number is a manufacturer-rated maximum—not a promise of the same performance in every system or application.
1. Confirm the SSD works with your host
M.2 describes a drive’s shape and connector family; it does not, by itself, mean a slot supports NVMe or PCIe 4.0. Check the manual or specifications for the exact computer, motherboard, laptop, or console. Confirm that the slot supports an M.2 NVMe SSD, the drive’s length, and the interface and lane configuration you plan to use. An M.2 SATA slot is not interchangeable with an NVMe slot.

- Interface and keying: Check for PCIe NVMe support and the required M.2 key. For PS5 expansion, Sony specifies PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe with Key M; M.2 SATA is not supported. Sony’s PS5 M.2 SSD requirements are console-specific, not a general PC or laptop standard.
- Drive length: Match the drive’s M.2 size to a supported slot and mounting point. Common size codes include 2230 and 2280; the numbers indicate the drive’s width and length in millimetres.
- PCIe generation: Confirm that the host supports PCIe 4.0 for the intended connection. A compatible drive operating through a slower link cannot deliver the throughput of a PCIe 4.0 connection.
- Clearance: Check for conflicts with a graphics card, laptop cover, motherboard shield, or other components. Include any heatsink in the dimensions you check.
For PS5 specifically, Sony lists supported capacities of 250 GB to 8 TB and drive lengths 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110. It also specifies a maximum width of 25 mm and a maximum overall thickness of 11.25 mm, with separate limits above and below the circuit board. Use Sony’s detailed diagram and instructions for the full dimensional limits rather than treating the overall thickness as a single clearance allowance.
2. Check cooling and heatsink dimensions
NVMe SSDs can generate heat during use. Whether you need a separate cooler depends on the drive and host: some drives include a heatsink, while others rely on a motherboard heatsink or require an add-on compatible with the enclosure. Check the host’s guidance and the exact drive’s installation instructions before buying an accessory.

For a PS5 expansion drive
Sony requires an effective cooling structure, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet. Cooling may be attached by the user or built into the SSD. The complete assembly must fit in the PS5 M.2 bay. Sony supports single- and double-sided drives, while noting that single-sided cooling structures are easier to fit; it advises choosing another option or checking with the manufacturer if fit is uncertain. See Sony’s installation and cooling guidance.
Do not choose a heatsink based only on the “M.2 2280” label. Check the SSD plus heatsink’s full length, width, and height against the host’s limits. For one model-specific example, Seagate lists its 2TB Game Drive with heatsink at 80.15 mm long, 24.2 mm wide, and 10.39 mm high, and warns against removing its preinstalled heatsink because doing so can damage the SSD. Those dimensions and instructions apply to that product, not to SSDs generally. Seagate Game Drive datasheet.

3. Compare the exact 2TB model’s speed ratings
Read the specification for the precise model and capacity you intend to buy. Ratings can vary between capacities and product variants, and a version with a heatsink may have different dimensions or other specifications from a bare drive.

Sequential read and write ratings describe a particular kind of data transfer. They do not, by themselves, establish game loading times, boot times, random-workload performance, sustained large-file transfer speeds, or results in a thermally constrained laptop. For PS5, Sony recommends at least 5,500 MB/s sequential read for an expansion SSD, but cautions that even a drive exceeding that figure may not match the console’s internal SSD in every game. That is Sony’s guidance for PS5—not a universal speed requirement for PCs or laptops. PlayStation Support.
4. Understand TBW and warranty limits
TBW means terabytes written: a manufacturer’s endurance rating used in its product specifications and warranty framework. It is not a prediction of the drive’s actual lifespan or a comparative failure-rate result. Compare the TBW figure for the exact capacity and read the full warranty terms, including any write limit and regional conditions.

The product materials cited above list 1,200 TBW for the 2TB WD_BLACK SN850P and 2,550 TBW for the 2TB Seagate Game Drive with Heatsink. Those are model-specific manufacturer ratings, not evidence that one model will last a particular number of years or is generally more reliable. Warranty limits may combine a time period with a TBW threshold: MSI, for example, says SPATIUM M482 coverage lasts up to five years or until the specified TBW is reached, whichever comes first.
