You do not need a console just to play games streamed to a TV. Start by checking whether the TV you already own supports the cloud gaming service you want. If it does, you may only need a compatible controller and the service’s required subscription. If it does not, a supported streaming device can add the app without replacing the TV; buy a console when you also want to play games locally.
Which option should you buy?

Compare compatibility, total cost (including controller and subscription), network and image requirements, and whether you want local play. No TV brand is universally best for cloud gaming: providers publish different compatibility lists.

Will cloud gaming work on your smart TV?
It may, but brand and year alone are not enough to confirm support. Check the exact model, firmware, service and country against the provider’s current list before buying. For example, Xbox lists select LG TVs running webOS 24 or newer, including certain updated 2022 and 2023 models, and select Samsung smart TVs from 2020 onward. The wording “select” matters: it does not establish support for every TV from those years.
NVIDIA lists LG and Samsung TVs from 2020–2025, subject to its requirements, including current webOS firmware and browser updates for LG sets. These ranges describe the models and requirements listed by NVIDIA, not blanket support for every set in a brand’s lineup. Check the live list because supported models and features can change.

LG’s February 21, 2025 announcement described its Gaming Portal on webOS 23-and-newer TVs in 19 markets at that time, naming GeForce NOW, Amazon Luna, Boosteroid, Blacknut and soon Xbox Cloud among its partners. That is rollout context, not confirmation that every named service is currently available on every LG TV or in every country. Can you use a Fire TV Stick for cloud gaming?
Yes, certain generations are listed for Xbox and GeForce NOW. Do not treat “Fire TV Stick” as one interchangeable device category: confirm the exact model and software requirement before checkout.

The Xbox device list and NVIDIA requirements are not identical. Check the list for the service you intend to use, not merely for a device that works with another service. A supported stick is a way to add an app to an HDMI TV; it does not itself guarantee a subscription, a particular game catalog or a given streaming resolution.
Do you need a console for cloud gaming on your TV?
No. A compatible smart TV or streaming device can run a supported cloud gaming app without an external console. Xbox’s TV instructions do require a compatible controller, high-speed internet and, for most cloud games, an active Game Pass subscription; exceptions apply, and supported games are required. Choose a console if you also want local console play, rather than buying one on the assumption that streaming requires it. Cloud play is streamed from a service, while local play runs on your console; consider which one you actually want before paying for console hardware and games.
What else do you need besides a TV or streaming device?
A compatible controller
Check the chosen app’s controller list before buying. Xbox requires a compatible controller for TV play. NVIDIA says TV navigation uses a physical keyboard and mouse, while gameplay requires a supported gamepad; its TV requirements list Microsoft Xbox controllers and Sony PS5 DualSense and DualShock 4 controllers. Controller compatibility can vary by app and model.

The service’s subscription and supported games
Hardware support does not mean every game is included. Xbox says most cloud games require an active Game Pass subscription, with exceptions, and streamed games must be supported. Availability varies over time, by region, plan and platform. Review the service’s current terms and catalog for your country instead of assuming a TV app or stick includes access.

Network figures are provider guidance, not a promise of performance. Xbox recommends a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi at 20 Mbps or higher for TV cloud gaming. NVIDIA’s smart-TV targets are 15 Mbps for HD at up to 60 FPS, 25 Mbps for FHD at 60 FPS, 40 Mbps for 4K at 60 FPS and 45 Mbps for 4K at 120 FPS. NVIDIA also recommends Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi and specifies latency below 80 ms to an NVIDIA data center. Its smart-TV 4K streaming requires GeForce NOW Ultimate. Consider Ethernet or networking equipment only if your existing setup does not meet the relevant service’s guidance. A new router is not automatically necessary. Actual stream quality can also depend on location, device and the network path to the service.

- Choose the service first. Confirm that it offers the games and plan you want in your country.
- Check your current TV’s exact model. Match it to the service’s device list and required software or firmware, rather than relying on the brand or screen size.
- If the TV is unsupported, check streaming-device compatibility. Compare the precise generation and operating system requirements. The Fire TV models above are examples listed by Xbox and NVIDIA, not a guarantee for other generations.
- Confirm the controller, network and any plan requirements. Include these in the total cost; hardware alone may not let you play.
- Buy a console only if local play is part of the goal. Cloud gaming on a TV does not inherently require one.
Cloud streams can have limits, including resolution and peripheral support, and performance depends on network, location and device. A service’s device listing establishes compatibility eligibility, not identical results in every home.
