What to Bring to Your First Group Run: A Practical Gear Guide

Comfortable shoes and movable clothes are enough to start. Check your club’s route, pace, water, and waiver details before deciding what else to bring.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a first group run, wear comfortable athletic shoes and clothes you can move in, and bring your phone and keys. Check with the organizer about the route, pace groups, water, and any sign-in or waiver requirements; add water or visibility gear only if the route and conditions call for it. You do not need to buy a full set of running gear before you go.

What to wear

Comfortable shoes you already own

Running requires little physical equipment, according to the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA). Start with athletic shoes that feel comfortable and are already broken in; a new pair is not a prerequisite for trying a group run.

Clothes that let you move

Choose comfortable clothing suited to the weather. Moisture-wicking fabric and socks can be useful, but they are optional upgrades: RRCA advises runners to work with what they have.

Layers or visibility gear when conditions call for them

Dress for the forecast and time of day. If the route is dark or poorly lit, wear reflective clothing or a lighted vest. RRCA advises against running in the middle of the road after dark; follow the organizer’s route instructions and local traffic rules.

What to carry

  • Phone and keys: Keep your keys secure. RRCA identifies a phone as an important safety tool, including for getting help if needed.
  • Water: Ask whether water is provided and whether the route has fountains or other access. Carry your own if the organizer recommends it, the route lacks access, conditions warrant it, or you know you will need it. Club arrangements differ: the Lakeland Runners Club, for example, describes routes with different water access.
  • ID: RRCA recommends carrying identification and suggests keeping it in a phone case; consider including relevant medical information. No particular ID product is required.
  • Waiver or registration details: Follow the host club’s directions. Sign-in and waiver requirements vary: RRCA recommends sign-in and waiver or emergency-contact collection as leader practices, while ATX Runners’ FAQ tells visitors to bring a signed waiver.

What to check before leaving home

  1. Confirm the basics on the club’s official page or latest post. Check the meeting place and start time, route and distance, registration or waiver directions, and any weather-related changes. These are host-specific details and can change.
  2. Ask about pace and beginner options. Find out whether beginners and run-walkers are welcome, what pace groups are available, and whether the group regroups or has a no-drop policy. ATX Runners, for instance, says it welcomes all levels and describes matching newcomers with similar-pace runners on some runs; that is an example, not a guarantee for every club.
  3. Check water, lighting, and route conditions. Use those details to decide whether to carry water or wear visibility gear.
  4. Arrive on time, or a few minutes early. Sign in if asked and listen for the route, pace, and safety briefing. RRCA’s runner etiquette guidance advises runners to show up on time and determine their pace group before starting.

How to take part safely and comfortably

Choose a sustainable pace

Pick a pace you can maintain rather than trying to keep up with the fastest runners. RRCA advises new runners not to do too much, too soon, and tells group-run participants to choose a sustainable pace. If you need a walk break, let nearby runners know and move considerately so people behind you are not surprised.

Follow the group’s route and safety rules

Stay on the designated route, obey traffic controls, and use the buddy system. RRCA advises runners not to run more than two abreast, especially on busy roads, sidewalks, and trails. It prioritizes sidewalks where available; if road running is necessary, its guidance says to face traffic. Local rules and the organizer’s instructions should guide your choices.

Gear you can usually leave at home

For a short introductory run, do not assume you need a running watch, hydration vest, gels, backpack, or new apparel. Ask the organizer about distance, terrain, water, and group rules instead of packing for a race you are not running.

Choosing a group that suits you

If you have several options, compare the details that affect the experience—not just the meeting time. Ask each organizer about:

  • Whether beginners and run-walkers are welcome, and what pace range the group supports.
  • Whether pace leaders, a sweeper, or a regrouping plan is available.
  • Route distance, terrain, lighting, and traffic exposure.
  • Water and restroom access.
  • Sign-in, registration, or waiver requirements.
  • How the club shares weather updates or cancellations.

RRCA’s run-leader guidance calls for sharing route, pace, terrain, weather, and hydration information in advance. Confirm current arrangements directly with the local organizer.
