Robotic surgery uses a computer-assisted system through which the surgeon controls instruments. The robot is a tool for particular operations, not an autonomous operator, and its suitability depends on both the procedure and your individual situation. Compare the approaches on the same terms
Robotic surgery and standard laparoscopy can both use small incisions; with a robotic system, the surgeon controls instruments from a console. Open surgery uses a different approach. Ask your surgeon to compare the options for your operation rather than treating “minimally invasive” or “robotic” as a guaranteed advantage. Discuss these factors for each approach:
- Expected benefits and complications for someone in your circumstances.
- Incisions and surgical approach, as well as likely pain and blood loss.
- Expected hospital stay, recovery, activity limits, and follow-up.
- The surgeon’s and team’s experience with that specific operation and approach.
- Whether the operation may need to change to open surgery, and why.
Minimally invasive approaches may offer benefits such as less pain or blood loss, fewer complications such as surgical-site infection, a shorter hospital stay, quicker recovery, or smaller scars. These are possible benefits, not promises; they vary with the operation and patient. Mayo Clinic advises patients to compare robotic surgery with other approaches and notes that it is not suitable for everyone in its robotic surgery overview. Ask about the surgeon, the team, and their experience
Training, credentials, experience with the system, and familiarity with your particular operation all matter. Ask directly, without relying on a single case-count cutoff: no universal minimum number of cases applies to every procedure.
- “What training and credentials do you have for this robotic system and this operation?”
- “How many of these operations have you and this team performed, and how often do you perform them?”
- “Who will operate at the console, who will assist at the bedside, and how does the team work together?”

A minimally invasive operation may need to be converted to open surgery if the surgeon believes that is safer. Ask about your specific operation and the surgeon’s own program rather than assuming conversion is impossible or that one rate applies to every patient.

Also ask how the team would respond to risks that are especially relevant to you, and what follow-up is planned. The key is to understand the contingency plan before consenting, not to seek a single conversion figure detached from the procedure and patient context.
Get a recovery estimate for your operation
There is no single recovery timeline that applies to all robotic operations. Ask for an estimate tied to the exact procedure and your health, and clarify what might change it.

If the operation is cancer-related, ask what the device is authorized to do
The FDA says it has not granted U.S. marketing authorization for a robotically assisted surgical device system specifically for cancer prevention or treatment. That limitation is specific: it is not a statement that every robotically assisted operation involving a person with cancer is unauthorized, nor does it address every possible device use. Ask what the device is authorized to do for the proposed procedure and what evidence supports the approach in your situation.
