The Ruark MR1 Mk3 is a powered stereo speaker pair for a desk or small listening space. Its main practical advantage is that it can take audio from a computer over USB-C, a TV over optical or analogue, a Bluetooth device, or a compatible turntable through its built-in moving-magnet phono stage. You do not need a separate stereo amplifier, though a subwoofer is optional.
What the MR1 Mk3 is
Ruark describes the MR1 Mk3 as a desktop speaker system. The pair has two 25W nominal Class D amplifiers—one for each speaker—and includes a left and right speaker. That makes it an active system: connect a source, rather than adding a separate stereo amplifier.

Ruark’s US product specifications list two 20mm silk-dome tweeters, two 85mm NS+ woofers, and a typical in-room frequency response of 48Hz–22kHz. These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent measurements or proof of how the speakers compare subjectively with another system. Ruark’s MR1 Mk3 product page showed a US price of $599 when observed in 2026; price and availability can change.

| Source or connection | What the MR1 Mk3 supports | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Computer over USB-C | USB-C audio input, up to 24-bit/96kHz, UAC 1.0 | Confirm your computer can send audio over USB-C. Use the computer’s audio output settings to select the MR1 when connected. |
| TV over optical | Combined 3.5mm line/mini-Toslink optical input; optical PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz | Check that the TV has an optical audio output and can send a format the speakers accept. The input is mini-Toslink at the speaker end, so confirm the cable ends before buying one. |
| Analogue source | Combined 3.5mm stereo line input | Check the source’s output connector and level; the right cable depends on that output. |
| Turntable | Stereo RCA input with an integrated moving-magnet (MM) phono stage and adjustable gain; Ruark lists 2–7mV on its US page | Make sure the cartridge and turntable output suit the MM input. A different cartridge type or output may need another phono stage or setup. |
| Phone, tablet, or other Bluetooth source | Bluetooth 5.1 with aptX HD, SBC, and AAC codecs | Available codec depends on the source device; Bluetooth does not use the USB-C or optical input’s stated resolution limits. |
Using the MR1 Mk3 with a computer
USB-C is the direct digital connection for a computer that supports USB audio. Ruark specifies UAC 1.0 and a maximum USB-C input of 24-bit/96kHz. Connect the speakers to the computer, then choose them as the audio output device if the computer does not switch automatically. Alternatively, use the combined line/optical input if the computer has a compatible analogue or optical output.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connecting a TV
The MR1 Mk3 can take TV audio through its combined input, using optical or analogue, and Ruark also lists Bluetooth as an option. Check the TV’s outputs before buying a cable: optical requires an optical output and a compatible mini-Toslink connection at the speaker; analogue requires a matching audio output. If using optical, check that the TV can output PCM, which Ruark specifies for the optical input.
Connecting a turntable
The integrated phono stage is for moving-magnet cartridges, and its gain is adjustable. A compatible turntable can therefore connect to the stereo RCA input without a separate phono preamp. Ruark says the input is designed to match most modern cartridges, but that does not establish compatibility with every cartridge or turntable. Check the cartridge type and the turntable’s output arrangement before connecting it; a turntable with a different cartridge type or a line-level output may require a different connection approach.

Can you add a subwoofer?
Yes. The MR1 Mk3 has a mono RCA subwoofer output. Ruark identifies its optional RS1 as a compatible subwoofer for adding bass extension. The listed MR1 pair contents do not include a subwoofer, so factor that in if you want bass reinforcement.
How the Mk3 differs from the Mk2
Ruark’s product identifier dates the Mk2 to 2017–2025 and the Mk3 to 2025 onward. It identifies the Mk3’s combined line/optical input and RCA turntable input as distinctions from the Mk2. Those connection changes make the Mk3 more accommodating for several source types, but the available specifications do not establish that it sounds better than the Mk2. Ruark’s support index lists guidance for USB-C audio, Bluetooth, turntables, TVs, speaker interconnection, and subwoofer choice.

Size, weight, and regional specifications
Specifications differ between Ruark’s regional listings, so do not combine their figures. The US page lists each cabinet as H185 × W135 × D160mm and 2.1kg, with maximum dimensions including feet, controls, and cables of H200 × W135 × D185mm. The UK listing gives H202 × W135 × D165mm and 2.2kg per speaker. If dimensions or weight affect your setup, verify the current specification for your market before purchase. The US product page and the UK product listing are the relevant regional references.

Who the MR1 Mk3 suits
- Consider it if you want a powered stereo pair with USB-C for a computer, Bluetooth for mobile devices, and optical or analogue connectivity for another source.
- It may simplify a turntable setup if your cartridge is moving-magnet and its output suits the built-in phono stage.
- Plan for an optional subwoofer if you want to extend bass beyond what the speaker pair provides.
- Compare carefully if your decision depends on a sound-quality ranking: the published specifications and connection list do not provide an independent comparison with the Mk2 or competing speakers.
