Has the Paramount–Warner Bros. merger closed?
Yes. Skydance announced on October 6, 2026, that its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery was complete after required regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions were met. The combined company now includes Paramount and Warner Bros. studios, HBO, Paramount+, HBO Max, broadcast and cable assets, CBS News and CNN, sports properties, and a large programming library. Skydance’s completion announcement describes the corporate transaction; it does not mean subscribers have already been moved to a new service.

The timing matters because earlier litigation developments are no longer the latest status. On July 24, the New York Attorney General’s office described an agreement to delay the merger pending a court ruling on the states’ lawsuit or June 1, 2027, whichever came earlier. Skydance subsequently announced the closing on October 6.
Will HBO Max and Paramount+ become one streaming service?
That is the announced long-term direction. The company says it plans to bring its streaming products together “into a single service over time,” but the October 7 Associated Press report did not identify a service name or launch date. AP’s report also says consumer costs, choices, and operational details remain unknown.

Skydance CEO David Ellison previously told AP, “Our viewpoint is, HBO should stay HBO.” That signals a stated preference for preserving HBO’s identity; it does not guarantee HBO Max will remain a separate app or subscription. The reviewed announcement and reporting do not establish whether both current apps will remain available during a transition.
What happens to your current subscription, price, and library?
Subscribers have not been given an account-handling plan. The reviewed sources do not say whether existing customers will be automatically migrated, whether billing arrangements will change, or whether both services will offer a transition period. They also do not provide a catalog-transfer schedule or guarantee that every title from either current catalog will be available in a future combined service.

For now, the most concrete price comparison is between the existing U.S. ad-supported plans reported by AP on October 7, 2026. These are current-plan figures, not a proposed combined-service price; prices can change.

AP reported that ad-free plans cost more. The two listed prices do not establish what a combined subscription might cost, whether a bundle discount will exist, or whether keeping both subscriptions will become more expensive or less expensive. What do the merger’s scale and regulatory review tell subscribers?
Skydance said the new company has “200+ million streaming subscribers across platforms” in 2026. That is an aggregate company figure, not a count of unique people, and it does not mean those subscribers are enrolled in a future combined service. Skydance’s announcement supplies the figure.
JustWatch estimated that HBO Max and Paramount+ together represented roughly 14% of the U.S. streaming market, as reported by AP on October 7, 2026. This is a third-party market estimate—not a government market definition, a measure of subscriber satisfaction, or a forecast of future subscribers. AP’s report citing JustWatch provides the estimate.

On June 12, 2026, the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division said it had completed its investigation and determined the proposed transaction was not likely to harm competition or American consumers, including in streaming video on demand. DOJ’s statement records the agency’s assessment at that time. It does not guarantee future prices or determine what the combined streaming product will offer.
