In Microsoft Excel, the Page Layout tab is where you control how a worksheet is arranged for the page and prepared for printing. It leads to settings for orientation, paper size, margins, scaling, print areas, and repeated title rows or columns. The title can refer to other applications too; their tabs and controls may differ.
What is the Page Layout tab for?
The tab groups page-presentation and print controls. It is for adjusting how worksheet content fits on a page, not for entering or calculating data. Microsoft’s general description of a Page layout ribbon tab includes commands for page setup, backgrounds, indenting, spacing, and positioning; that guidance describes a standard ribbon concept rather than every Excel version’s exact controls. Where are the main page and print settings?
In Excel, choose Page Layout > Page Setup to open the Page Setup dialog. The ribbon tab is the starting point; the dialog gathers detailed settings for the worksheet’s page and printed output. Microsoft lists this guidance for Microsoft 365 and Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016; the precise interface can vary by version and platform. Microsoft’s Page Setup in Excel guide
- Orientation and paper size: Choose portrait or landscape orientation and the paper size.
- Margins: Adjust the space around the printed worksheet.
- Scaling: Shrink or enlarge the sheet or a selection for printing. The “Fit to” controls let you target a page width and height.
- Print area: Set a selected range as the portion of the worksheet to print.
- Print titles: Repeat selected rows or columns on pages when a worksheet spans multiple sheets of paper.
- Headers, footers, and print options: Set page details and other output choices in the dialog.
How do headers, footers, and page numbers work?
For a worksheet, use Insert > Header & Footer to edit a header or footer; Excel switches to Page Layout view. Worksheet headers and footers are visible in Page Layout view and Print Preview, and appear on printed pages. Chart sheets and charts use the Page Setup dialog for headers and footers rather than the worksheet-editing flow. Microsoft’s worksheet headers and footers guide

To add page numbers to a worksheet, start with Insert > Header & Footer. Page Setup also provides options to change the first page number and the order in which pages are numbered. Microsoft’s page-number instructions

Some controls are about printed output, so the print result may differ from the worksheet’s normal on-screen appearance. For example, Excel gridlines are not printed by default even when they are visible on screen. Use Print Preview to check the output before printing.
