Its official FAQ instead gives a recursive bit of wordplay: “npm is not an acronym.”
Does the “p” in npm stand for “package”?
No. npm’s official FAQ says npm is not an acronym for “Node Package Manager.” That familiar phrase describes the tool’s role, but it is not the official meaning of its name. So the question “what does the p stand for?” starts from a mistaken premise: the letter is not an initial in an expanded name.

What does npm say its name means?
npm calls the name a recursive backronym for “npm is not an acronym.” The joke is recursive because the phrase uses the very name it explains. The FAQ notes that if the name were ninaa (“npm is not an acronym”), it would count as an acronym; npm does not. npm’s package page FAQ is the source for both the correction and the wordplay.
Where did the name come from?
According to the same FAQ, npm began with a Bash utility called pm, short for pkgmakeinst. That function installed various things across platforms. npm describes hypothetical expansions of its eventual name as “node pm” or “new pm”—not as a formal “Node Package Manager” acronym.

What does npm do, if its name is not an acronym?
The name’s wordplay does not change the tool’s function: npm manages JavaScript packages. Its install documentation describes installing a package and its dependencies, with package references that can identify registry packages, versions, tags, Git repositories, tarballs, or folders. The cited npm install reference is for legacy npm CLI 7.24.2, so its version-specific options and defaults should not be assumed to describe the current CLI.
The command-line interface is also one way to work with the npm Public Registry. npm’s terms describe registry services for searching, downloading, publishing, and managing packages through the CLI, APIs, or website. Those terms say npm Open Source has no charge and paid services have separate terms; the page was last updated March 10, 2022. Read npm’s Open-Source Terms for that service description.

Use lowercase npm in ordinary text. npm’s FAQ says to capitalize it only where a convention calls for all capitals, such as in man-page titles.
